I am so thankful for this revealing video from Stu...I have so often pondered how someone could have this much knowledge, talent, and joyful interactions with his youtube audience. If he made a streaming or CD of his approach I would buy it the same day... I also would not even consider a digital piano purchase without his expertise which he proves almost daily... A joy to listen and to watch him play and absorb his incredible knowledge... Thank you for this..✌✌✌

Stu, I have spent so many hours watching you review pianos over the last 18 months that you gained a weird niche celebrity status in my head! But I did that because you are by far the most knowledgeable, informative, balanced and educational reviewer out there. It so happens that today is the day it all culminated in actually choosing my new piano - a new Estonia L210. I waited to be able to try Estonias because your review of the L168 and comparison review of the L190 and Shigeru SK-3 showed me that Estonias might be exactly what I was longing for - and indeed, once my fingers fell on them, they were everything. Shopping in Melbourne, Australia, I couldn't repay your help by buying from your store, but I still want to thank you for helping me find my dream piano - I am sure it wouldn't have happened without you.

Stu mentioned that he would be open to an alternate rock song other than Bob Seagers> Ol' time Rn'R. He might consider the iconic piano on Skynards Sweet Home Alabama..& the intro guitar parts too ..Even the end guitar solo duel?...& maybe the intro to Doors> Lite My Fire for an alternate organ groove. All crowd Pleasers. Stu is one of the best Rock plyrs Ive heard in quite a while which is evident by hearing him riff out the Seager tune.His Rock prowess was shouted by that small but huge ol time Rn'R delivery!

Isn't it interesting how shame is so often the great motivator? After blowing it on stage, you determined never to do that again--never to feel that way again--and kicked your preparation into overdrive. I'd bet that you could find other examples of shame supercharging your various pursuits. It's certainly true for me. Anyway, that's just one random thought that occurred to me while listening to your terrific presentation. You are a treasure to the greater world. I love "checking in" with what you're doing even though it's likely we will never meet. What a world we all live in these days....

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! I couldn't agree more. It is our greatest "failures" that often lead to and inspire the most profound progress and improvement. I think it is a bit of a shame that we view the word "failure" with such a negative connotation. If we recalibrated our collective minds a bit as a culture, we could see the amazing potential that comes out of stumbling every now and then. Also, to your second point, the Internet is an exciting tool for connectivity! With that said, if you're ever in the Toronto area, hopefully, you'll stop by our showrooms. Stu can usually be found floating around one of the three showrooms. :)

I am not surprised to hear you mention Oscar Peterson several times. He is my idol. To me he is the total package when it comes to technical ability (left and right hand), phrasing, expression, improvisation and to me above all, tone. When I heard four other guys play Tea for Two and then heard Oscar, the note expression and punctuated detail, no matter the speed, always floors me.

Thanks Stu. It’s nice to learn a little bit of your history. You have a great style on the piano and I love watching and listening to your demos. I played piano as a kid and really wish I had practiced as my mom wanted me to. I had a good friend (Ed Holz) who graduated from Vienna Conservatory of Music back in the 60s. He was a studio musician in Los Angeles and played in my bar in Anaheim for a little while. I bought a Yamaha 6’6” grand for him to play and I’ve loved the sound of Yamaha ever since then. He did a version of funeral For A Friend that was so good that I want him to play it at my funeral, if I can find him. It’s been 30 years since we connected. What’s the name of your CD? I’d like to get a copy. Thanks.

@@MerriamPianos thank you for responding. Actually I bought the piano from Sherman Clay & Co in 1986 for $6500. It had just been refurbished by Yamaha and was like new. I bought it for my bar so Ed would play there. He also played at the Anaheim Hilton. He said he had to practice 5 hours a day so he may as well get paid for it. He could play The Star Spangled Banner with his Left hand while playing Bennie and the Jets at the same time with his Right hand. Unfortunately I went bankrupt from having too much fun in my bar. After that I lost track of him.

Thanks for this insightful video Stu- I’ve only been following you for a few months but became a fan quickly- your reviews were exactly what I was looking for in my search for a digital piano to complement my acoustic Yamaha T121 (2007). I find your work refreshing in its objective sincerity and I really appreciate listening to your improvisations and incredible voicing. Interestingly, I’ve found some similarities between us as you went through this Q&A about your life and career… I however don’t have perfect pitch….nor anywhere near your talent…and I am not a professional musician by any stretch of the imagination but music is a passion and the piano my preferred hobby and your videos not only inform but inspire as your own passion transpires…so… thank you!

It will come. 7:29 Stu, I would love to see your conversation with Adam Neely. It will happen. Was wondering for some time now, what mascot fits you. Pink Panther - that's it! Hope it sits on the camera when you filming, and helps to connect with us ;-) 9:01 Performing? Always for us - -muppets- viewers. So the quality of your YT content is on the level where it's time to split hairs... Just need some time.

Nice one Stu! Still on the fence re ES 120, 520, 920, may get an older synth before piano though due to budget 😂
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in! It is definitely a tough call to make. For me, the difference in price between the ES520 and ES920 is pretty small, so it is easy enough to justify the jump to the top-of-the-line model. However, the gap between ES120 and ES920 is fairly large, so it will come down to each individual's assessment of cost-to-value on that front.

at 08:52 you mention Mancini and the Pink Panther theme. my intro to jazz is almost identical however the tv theme that hooked me was Lalo Schifrin' s "Mission Impossible". metaphor?... i digress. Mancini's Pink Panther was a close second. there was also a show during the late 60's early 70s called NYPD. not to be confused w NYPD blue or CSI, a gritty NY crime drama show and the theme song was incredible to hear the horn chords and intensity kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3-ahZpon8Z2mtk. another tv theme i was drawn to was the Spiderman cartoon theme also of the seventies. btw, nice chops 😎

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! I am not sure which studio monitors Stu is currently using. In terms of equivalent monitors to the Focal Solo6, I know a lot of people compare them to the Genelec 8040B monitors. However, I don't personally have any experience with the Genelec model. They are a slightly cheaper alternative, at least here in Canada. Thanks and hope this helps! :)

Stu, I really need a beautiful REAL PIANO sounding VST with good sustain. I currently play a Samick 6'8 grand and know what it sounds like to have the full, deep, rich 3D sound. I have installed the Ravenscroft but it feels empty, lacking the harmonics and the decay happens too rapidly. Is there a way for me to keep the full sustain longer on the Ravenscroft virtual piano??
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 9 ай бұрын
Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for tuning in and writing in with your question. I am not intimately familiar with the Ravenscroft VST, so, unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure offhand which parameters are adjustable. If you are looking for other VST plugins, the VSL piano VST is quite authentic sounding in my experiences.

I have perfect pitch, discovered when I was about 5 or 6 years old. At that time it was assumed that you were born with it. According to research that's not really true - you need to grow up in a family where music is played all day. While it's a nice party trick and enables you to write down a song you hear in no time, there are drawbacks too. Transposing can be challenging and playing a piano not tuned to 440Hz can short circuit my brain at times.

Is perfect pitch required to be an accomplished artist?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Hi! Brent here! Not at all! It is an incredibly useful skill and certainly has massive benefits (as is evident in Stu's incredible playing, improvising, and musicianship). With that said, there are many professional musicians of the highest-level that do not possess perfect pitch. While you can develop very good relative pitch through practice and ear training, many researchers suggest that it is extremely unlikely and difficult to develop perfect pitch beyond a very young age (if I recall 5 years old was one bench mark that was suggested).
@Biozene

Prince didn't have perfect pitch and he was more accomplished than the vast majority of artists who do have it.

As a modern Jazz musician, i would say you've been traumatized by Bill Evans lol. You should take more breathes in your kinda "bop improvisations". Way too static, as Bill Evans was btw. Swing is non existent in your playing. Just an advise for you to progress, cheers.
