My grandfather served on the hood for several years as a radio operator. Serving on the Hood was a damp experience as she sat low in the water, giving her the highest TB count of any other ship. My grandfather was medically transferred off due to severe illness a week before the HMS Hood final voyage to hunt the Bismarck. I have a lot interest in this ship for obvious reasons.

I think in the ship description, when it says compromising. It is referring to your ship not your rounds. (as in when some one shoots you) I believe it says above average AP/HE shell damage, when its talking about your shells.
@Hiloafer3 жыл бұрын
I am confused on the compromiseing debuff. As it says " higher caliber shells may overpin the armor, but may still arm, depending on the shell velocity. I always think" well if they overpin then why worry about the shells arming as they went through the ship.

HMS Hood was a British battlecruiser from the interwar period and World War II, the only Admiral-class battlecruiser ever built. Launched in 1918, it entered service two years later. It was 262.3 meters long. The main artillery armament of the cruiser was eight BL Mk I guns, caliber 381mm. In the interwar period, the cruiser, as the largest ship in the world, was the showpiece of the Royal Navy and a symbol of pride for Royal Navy as well. Ironically, Hood was supposed to be getting a refit, but when World War II was declared, her refit was put on hold. After the outbreak of World War II, in July 1940, the Royal Navy was forced to carry out a highly distasteful act- the destruction of the French Fleet at Oran/Mers El-Kebir, Algeria. The destruction was at the hands of "Force H"- a task force led by H.M.S. Hood. The action was against men and ships that had once worked very closely with Hood and her crew. After the French fleet’s destruction, she was transported to Gibraltar, where he joined the Force H. On May 21, 1941, accompanied by the King George V-class battleship "Prince of Wales", she set out on her last voyage. Three days later, British ships clashed in the Danish Strait with the German battleship Bismarck and the accompanying heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. After a short artillery duel over a long distance, and suffering serious damage from Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, the final well-aimed salvo from Bismarck caused an internal explosion in the stern of the Hood, specifically its magazine storage rooms, which completely destroyed the ship. Out of the 1,418 crew, only three sailors were saved, with 1,415 others lost. The destruction of Hood caused a shock in Britain. HMS Hood was named after Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood, he was a British admiral who served during the Seven Years’ War and the American and the French Revolutionary wars.

@hmswarspite32334 жыл бұрын
Gregg Black every single battleship in the British navy almost has the same weakness as the hood as I think just before ww1 a doctrine was made that instead of having good aim with there guns they would have better reload but to do this they would keep cordite in the bulkheads and keep the bulkheads open making the fire rate faster but making it where one shell could cause the ship to explode. The Hood is not the first to suffer this fate because of the British neglecting to train there gunnery crews as in the battle of Jutland it happened just the same to ships causing many deaths and the British did not learn.

Hood was called a battlecruiser but had similar if not better armour than the Queen Elizabeth class.
@davefinfrock33244 жыл бұрын
Going to have to take exception to Hood's characterization as a under-armored battlecruiser. This ship was conceived and designed to give the British a capital ship with the armament and durability of a Queen Elizabeth-class BB with the speed equivalent or superior to existing battlecruisers. Her armor profile was very similar to that of Bismarck, with superior turret armor and a better torpedo protection system (the in-game numbers are a joke--the system was very similar to that of the Nelson class). What you do have is typical of the time period and that is poor deck armor coverage and not terribly thick armor where covered, though not dissimilar to ships of the same era. Hood's main issues historically were bad luck and forever delayed major refits. Her gunnery direction was thoroughly obsolete and her latest small refit had left her with unprotected secondary battery magazines in her machinery spaces close to the X and Y turret main magazines. Three guesses what got hit by Bismarck and the first two don't count.
@comeinmesenpai4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, she was supposedly going to be fully modernized in the late 30s. Then WW2 broke out, forcing her deployment into the Mediterranean fleet. So she only received an AA upgrade.

This is an excellent comment, particularly for a KZbin video. Based on my (albeit limited) historical knowledge, you pretty much hit the nail on the head here. I wish Wargaming put in a bit more effort at making the ships truer reflections of their historical selves.

In Britain during the war, it was common for communities (cities, towns, etc) to adopt ships in the Royal Navy by raising funds for the war effort. A primary school in my hometown (where my mum studied in the late 70s) adopted the HMS Hood. There was a regular passing of letters from the students to the crew and back the other way. The sinking had a massive effect on the morale of the school and town.

Hood has over 300mm of belt armor, which is very good for a ship of her type. When properly angled she is very tanky but she is not a bow tanker. She has the same guns as Warspite and she fires the same normal fuse AP shells.

I was recently reading an interesting paper that suggested the reason for the fatal penetration was the bow wave that the hoods bow caused, slightly exposing the armour belt below the intended waterline, so the Bismarck’s round was not slowed down by having to travel through the water, as the hoods designers assumed, and it punched straight through.

Fun fact Hood was actually more than a match for Bismarck the reason Hood was so easily dispatched by Bismarck was actually just pure luck hitting hoods torpedo storage Bay which caused a massive explosion just behind turret three the ship literally lit up like a Roman candle and split into it was a lucky shot that is true but in an actual fight for that lucky shot never occurred there's probably a universe where the hood wun more fun facts about the hood she was not alone in her arrangement against the Bismarck and Prince eugen she also had another battleship with her battleship Prince of Wales a King George the 5th class battleship Prince of Wales hit Bismarck a few times and even caused Bismarck to have an oil leak which allowed ships to find her much easier later on in the hunt for Bismarck also the hood fired one last shot as it was sinking in a sign of defiance

The British classified ships differently than U.S. The U.S. bases their BB's off displacement/armor, British based theirs off top speed. Any BB below 25 kts was a battleship, those faster were classified as battlecruiser. The Hood was only 3 feet shorter than the Yamato. Hood had a greater displacement than that of the Alabama, and about the same displacement as the Iowa. Love the videos. Keep up the great work.

Hey Spartan, nice video as always. Quick comment, I believe in the overview section of the Hood where wargaming has labeled the Hood as “compromising” you may be misinterpreting the meaning. I could be wrong, but I read it as “Higher Caliber Shells May over-pen the armor...” meaning that enemy ships that fire high caliber shells at you may over-pen your armor (13-381 mm armor so that doesn’t sound unreasonable). Again, great videos. I just wanted to provide some food for thought as I think wargaming is a little vague I’m their descriptions.

For those of you that don’t already know, the British weren’t very accurate with there ships so to compensate this they decided to increase the amount of shells they could fire in a short amount of time or in simpler terms throw enough shit at the wall and some of its bound to stick this came at the cost of opening the hatch between the gun and where they stored the cordite which increases the risk of detonation which is what happened to HMS Hood
@stuartwhigham71464 жыл бұрын
Ethan King That might have applied in WW1, not after. Hood was destroyed due to a magazine penetration. Not flash from poorly stored ammunition.
@autoculto76293 жыл бұрын
Rushed reloading was a WW1 Jutland battleship problem and was not carried through to WW2 or the Hood sinking. It's a false claim against the Hood that seems to have stuck. The Hood received a very lucky or unlucky (whichever way you look at it) shell penetration which blew the magazine. The Hood's armour was sufficient in the vital areas and comparable to all nations battleships. There's a documentary out there that compared the armour to the Bismarck and the more modern New Jersey battleship. The final conclusion was that the same hit on ANY other battleship would have resulted in the same outcome.
@matthewyakush65484 жыл бұрын
Survivors of the Hood were Ted Briggs, Robert Tilburn and William Dundas. Around ten minutes into the battle of Denmark Strait, the Hood was hit by the third round following the two that hit Hoods main mast and another that detonated a 4 inch AA shell locker. This third shell penetrated at the base of Hoods rear mast punching through to the rear 15in main battery magazine, resulting in the ignition of 100 tons of gunpowder leading to a deadly explosion which split the ship in two. The hood sank in less than three minutes, taking the lives of 1,418 people with her to the bottom. The last survivor of the Hood, Signalman Ted Briggs, just died in 2008.......R. I. P. To all those lost that day and thank you for your service..
