Pashtun total population is about 65 million that are distributed as follows:- about 30 million in KPK and FATA, 17 to 18 million in Afghanistan, 5-6 million in Baluchistan, 4-5 million in Karachi and 6-7 million around the world in a massive global diaspora. Of the combined population of Afghanistan, KPK and Baluchistan (about 85 million) Pashtuns make up 70% or around 60 million. They can be considered to be, by far, the largest national group of central Asia with their population almost equal to that of all central asians (Uzbek, Kazakh, Kirghiz, Turkmen and Tajik). Kabuliwalas or pashto speaking pathans came here in 20 th century , and came as traders they still have relations in Afghanistan , that's why there culture is still not changed that much , on the other hand The urdu speaking pathans of india mostly in uttar pardesh , punjab and Gujarat , came here mostly in the 17 th century with mughal armies to serve as soldiers and came with their whole tribes so hence no more relations there , its been 400 years , the pashtun culture and pashto language is diluted in urdu language and culture . Today most people using khan surnames are not pathans , because many people from other ethnicities started using khan surnames.

their leader was Bacha Khan, a man who belonged to Charsadda district. He was called 'Frontier Gandhi', because of his non passive resistance approach. He believed that Pashtuns on both sides of the border are essentially Afghans and should form a state called 'Pashtunistan'. His followers were called 'khudai khidmatgars'. When the referendum happened for Indian Muslims to be partitioned into a separate state, he rejected this idea. That is why some of the khudai khidmatgars left and settled in India, because they did not want to be part of 'Pakistan'. These people are their descendants. Dont you see, when they say where are you from? They reply Pashtunistan, even though that is no state. It is because they do not recognize Pakistan as a state. And all those people from the khudai khidmatgar movement belonged to those areas.....
