The MIT Morningside Academy for Design announces the
2024 cohort of Design Fellows for the upcoming academic year. The highly competitive program
received applications from talented designers across the Institute (@mit), leading to a rigorous selection
process.
Ten fellowships providing full tuition support, a stipend, and health insurance, were
awarded to current Master’s or PhD candidates from seven MIT departments (Civil and
Environmental Engineering @mitcivilandenvironmentalen4379, Mechanical Engineering @MITMechE, Architecture @MITArchitectureDept, Urban Studies and Planning @duspmit2995,
Management @MITSloan, Media Arts and Sciences @MITMediaLab, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science @MIT_EECS).
Congratulations to:
* Sofia Chiappero, DUSP and @mitdesignx5458, who works to improve the livelihoods of people living in informal settlements.
* Clemence Couteau, Sloan, who s creating a therapy chatbot to support mothers with post-partum depression.
* Mateo Fernandez, Architecture, who transforms the building industry through biomaterials and 3D-printing for construction.
* Charlotte Folinus, MechE, who develops soft robots adapting to uncertainty.
* Alexander Htet Kyaw, Architecture & EECS, who challenges conventional manufacturing and fabrication processes through robotic assembly and Gen AI.
* Dení López, DUSP, who uses design for disaster resilience to support Zapotec communities in Mexico.
* Caitlin Morris, Media Arts & Sciences, who explores the role of multisensory influences on cognition and learning.
* Maxine Perroni-Scharf, EECS, who develops metamaterials with extreme properties.
* Lyle Regenwetter, MechE, who trains Gen AI to incorporate design requirements such as safety and performance.
* Zane Schemmer, CEE, who works on reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment by designing with local materials.
