What they never tell you about the Theisman injury, is that LT was the FIRST person at the hospital to see Joe. Before his family even. But they never mention that. He was a very flawed human, but imo, the greatest defensive player in NFL history.

I met Lawrence 2 years ago and knew his reputation and story from being a Giants fan (who doesn’t?), he seemed like a teddy bear when I met him and he was more than happy to hang around and talk football with me and my father for hours. Coincidentally I was wearing my father’s old Taylor Jersey and without me even asking when I went to say goodbye to him, he asked me “you don’t think I’d let you leave without signing my jersey did you?”. My face lit up and he signed the jersey listing all his stats.

I don't care what anyone says, Lawrence Taylor is the best defensive player ever to play football. I'm a New York Giants fan, and watched this man wreak havoc play in play out, game in game out for 13 seasons. As for his partying, (drug use) it's frightening to think he probably had to do it just to take the edge off.

I'm a Steeler fan and I agree with you jack ham, jack Lambert, mean Joe Greene, Mel blount and many others from the 70s steelers were some of the best defensive players of all time... BUT they still weren't LT although the 70s steelers had the most dominant defense of all time, when it comes to a singular player Lawrence Taylor is the BEST defensive player of all time.

He is the GOAT. He is the greatest player of all time. When other teams have to scheme around you, have to cut players and draft players and make players just because of you. That is something. Tom Brady and Joe Montana are 2nd and 3rd. This guy was unstoppable with 3 lineman on him. And a pass rusher is the most valuable position behind the Quarterback. This guy changed every single game he played, no matter how much pain he was in. This is the GOAT.

@lomax343
@lomax343 6 жыл бұрын
@ Jreds - I'm not comparing them. I merely point out that, by his own admission, LT frequently took the field with insufficient blood in his alcohol stream. This does not enhance anyone's ability to do anything - except to say stupid things and fall over. I have no personal experience of cocaine (yes, I've led a sheltered life), but I'm reliably informed that it does little to enhance one's judgment. A player on cocaine may play with fierce intensity, but he does not necessarily play smart - and that's just as important. As for playing under the influence of alcohol and cocaine simultaneously - well, I doubt that they cancel each other out. Now don't get me wrong. I still think that, with the possible exception of Jim Brown, LT is the greatest player in the history of the NFL. I just can't help wondering if he couldn't have been greater still.

Cubefarmer Hkc The linebacker position is loaded with great players in NFL history (Jack Lambert, Bobby Bell, Mike Singletarry, Ray Lewis, Ray Nitschke, Junior Seau, Derrick Thomas, Dick Butkus...the closest of LT for me, etc.). But Lawrence Taylor is on top. In a «all-time draft» on defense, I'm pretty certain 95% of the teams will draft Taylor 1st. Back then, if you were not able to block LT, the socre wasn't on your side at the end of the game!

Funny thing is: This video focused on his pass rush. However, Taylor, was also excellent in the run (both as a stuffer; in pursuit, and penetration behind the line), and in pass protection. He could diagnose a play like no other, and seemingly always ended up around the ball at the end of a play. His pursuit and motor were relentless, in combination with his speed, strength, technique and diagnosis ability. He was also excellent in special teams coverage as well.

Let's see how good Brady would be after being hit by LT one time. That's why Joe Montana is still the greatest QB ever. Montana had to play against LT at least once every year. LT is the greatest defensive player ever.
@denislepine535
@denislepine535 6 жыл бұрын
Pro Wrestling Talk You can say this if you want about Brady, but Brady is playing in a passing era, where the running game isn't that a factor if we compare to LT era. So today's QB have play against more blitz packages than the QB's in LT's era. And while there's no LT today, NFL have tremendous athletes who can run, and run fast. If you know football, you know the names. But regarding LT being the greatest defensive player (and in my mind top-10 all-time player), I'm with you. He was my favorite player back then. He was an unbelievable player who made the left tackle position famous for ever!!!

Two words: Dick Butkus. More disciplined. He was so physically superior to his opposition. Dick was twice the size of any LB in the NFL during his era. LT was just the best during his era. But he was not more intimidating than Butkus. Back in the Butkus days, players could bite each other for gosh sakes.
@tnewsome9121
@tnewsome9121 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sure. Butkus was just a middle linebacker. LT had sacks, tackles behind the line, interceptions in coverage and stuffed guys in the middle and goal line. Butkus was great but even Ray Lewis was better and he came into the league at 218 pounds....

Byron Bezuidenhout Arguably one of the best, had he not been on such great teams I could see your point, but Ronnie Lott had to share the limelight with so many Hall of Fame players. Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig, etc.... as where L.T. wasn't on that many great teams, thus making him stand out more.

Shahryar Choudhry not at all. Atwater is an all time great and is probably the hardest hitting safety ever but there was no one greater at the safety position than Ronnie Lott. Hard hitter, great coverage, and have guts. He even had part of his pinky amputated just to play in the super bowl.

Anders Engebretson Look at what Atwater did to Christian Okoye. That dude is 40 lb's heavier than Atwater, yet Atwater still laid him out. "Nigerian Nightmare"? More like "Not Today". Atwater is still the GOAT imo. He shoild be in the HOF already. Fucking NFL.

41 beers isn't that much to a guy like that. I've downed a case of 24 several times in my college days and I was like 160/70 pounds. Factor in Taylors body mass, his elite physical condition, potential drugs, natural high and adrenaline of being drafted to NFL it's not surprising at all.
