The circular mirrors from the battle of Copenhagen are incredible. All Charlie's pieces show a man dealing antiques at the very top end of the business .

Saw that chinoiserie cabinet and...oh. My. Gawd. Hope it finds a good home. The swabbie was US Navy enlisted. (the only integrated military service from the 1860s until after WWII) Weirds me out too and I'm American. I know what he is, but WHY and how he ended up in the UK is probably a good tale. My favorite piece in the back room has to be that James Peak piece too - it was made by someone who cared.

Hi David, I bought an old mahogany box with some flatware from auction in the Borders many years ago and once restored the brass cartouche bore the name Admiral Carre, who himself fought alongside Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen 1801. As a midshipman he had made his name by capturing two French privateers in 1799. Admiral Carre was appointed Admiral by Queen Victoria and died unmarried and without children around 1850. His castle in the Borders was demolished in the 20th century and his box was found in an old storage cupboard in what would have been a workers cottage on his once-estate. This canteen box is probably only one of a few reminders of his existence and I think he is worthy of further investigation.

How wonderful to hear. Charlie I’m sure would love to know more about it - especially if you still have the box. D

You both hinted at some later explanation of the (I'm guessing) early 20thC carving of the young black US Navy enlisted lad. I thought it was beautifully realised and could imagine one of the more cerebral rappers paying an absolute fortune for it. I'd love to hear more! Nonetheless, thanks to both you and Charlie for this wonderful tour around his treasures.

I'm going to take a guess and say that the sculpture of the Negro US navy boy is by Selma Burke, an African American sculptor.
