The first Joni album i bought was actually Dog eat Dog in 1986 and loved it. It was produced by Thomas Dolby, a musician who relied heavily on synthesisers. I also like Turbulent Indigo from 1994

Thoroughly enjoyable first episode of a long time promised series and well worth the wait and may I say the Wright choice of guest. Chris is an endlessly easy guy to listen to and you always come away feeling you’ve definitely learned a lot. As for Joni I’ve listened to her since I was 15 but she was never more powerful in my life than when I spent 11 torturous days on a Covid ward wondering if my departure was going to be in my wife’s car or a body bag like the poor guy in the next bed. It was her music that got me through, her music that talked to me in the dead of night and her inspiration that put me into a deep conversation with my Covid which empowered me to inform it that I was rising from the canvas, fighting back and was going to win. And that is why I can say that “Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter” IS a religious experience and that’s why it sits in my Joni top 5 along with “Ladies Of The Canyon”, “Hejira”, “Summer Lawns” and “Mingus”.

Thanks for your very kind comments Paul, they are hugely appreciated. Don Juan was the last Joni album to go platinum, but it's even more special than that, of course, and it was interesting to read of your own very personal experiences with it. Sending you very best wishes.

Hi Phil - great podcast. I love Joni also, but coming from a UK, mid 60's folk background I loved more the early albums up to say Don Juan .... I didnt enjoy the more jazz flavoured albums quite so much, although some were quite good. Its a bit like John Martyns career - I loved those early acoustic albums - London Conversation, The Tumbler etc etc , but he lost me later on when he drifted into the more jazzy obscure stuff. Anyway - Joni, a true legend in her own time. Cheers Doug

I guess Chris couldn't pick them all but i was surprised Chris didn't include Hissing of Summer Lawns in his picks. Great introduction to Joni i think.

Thanks for watching and your kind comment Martin. It really is impossible picking favourites and I would unquestionably make different picks depending on mood each day. I love them all.

Brilliant Phil. You should do one with Dave Lewis on Led Zeppelin 👍
