Meet the SHE-ensya Thesis Grant Finalists!

Hello Science Fans!
Are you excited to learn about the research done by our finalists for the SHE-ensya thesis grant this year?
From studies about colorectal cancer and possible treatments using indigenous plants, to the identification of invasive fish in Pantabangan Dam, and the improvements of copper coating, our SHE-roes certainly have amazing research up ahead. Without further ado, I’m happy to present our 2024 finalists!
Finalist 1 - Yannikka Bata and Jeremiah John Urbi
Thesis Title: Determining the Apoptotic Inducing Property of Embelia sp. on HT-29 Colorectal Cancer Cell Line Using 2D and 3D Cell Culture Methods
Abstract:
This study explores the apoptotic-inducing activity of Embelia sp. ethanolic extract on HT-29 colorectal cancer cell lines using 2D and 3D cultures. It aims to provide data that could contribute to the success of drug development programs in the Philippines.
Finalist 2 - April Mae Mangahas, John Maverick Cruz, Mike Christian Sindayen, and Pacifico Villalino IV
Thesis Title: Profiling of Invasive Ichthyofaunal Species in Pantabangan Dam through DNA Barcoding
Abstract:
This research profiles invasive fish species in Pantabangan Dam using DNA barcoding. The findings will aid in developing efficient management strategies for these invasive species.
Finalist 3 - Patricia Mae Ludovice
Thesis Title: Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Treatment Of Copper Surface For Enhanced Corrosion Resistance
Abstract:
This study examines the impact of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on copper surfaces to enhance corrosion resistance. It offers novel insights into low-cost, environment-friendly corrosion prevention methods.

I vote for #TeamDNABarcoding I watched the three video presentation and I see all the efforts of each finalist, but I personally love how finalist #2 make an effort, and as I grew up here in the Philippines, I understand how hardworking the mangingisda is. Their thesis provides essential data for preserving the local ecosystem and protecting native species. And understanding which invasive species are present allows for the development of targeted management strategies to mitigate their impact. Additionally, the research can improve resource management and support the communities dependent on the dam. Profiling of invasive fishes through DNA barcoding would produce a great information that could be a stepping stone to effectively populate beneficial species, it is a good thesis to be granted. The video presentation has clearer explanation of the problem, solution and goal compared to others anyway.

#TeamDNABarcoding Ang thesis na "Profiling of Invasive Ichthyofaunal Species in Pantabangan Dam through DNA Barcoding" ay dapat bigyang-priyoridad dahil una, matutulungan nito ang pag-identify ng mga invasive species na nakakasira sa lokal na ecosystem at nagbabanta sa mga native na species. Pangalawa, makakatulong ito sa pagpapanatili ng biodiversity at tamang pamamahala ng mga likas na yaman. Pangatlo, makakapagbigay ito ng mahalagang datos para sa mga policymakers para makabuo ng mga regulasyon laban sa mga invasive species. At panghuli, maipapakalat nito ang kaalaman sa publiko tungkol sa kahalagahan ng pangangalaga sa kalikasan ng Pantabangan Dam at sa iba pang yamang tubig.

As a son of a farmer, malaki na dadamage sa pananim namin because of invasive species (swamp eels, janitor fishes, etc.) Super helpful kung magkaroon ng way para malaman kung ano yung kalaban mo sa hanapbuhay. Simple but clever with meaningful impact yung DNA barcoding ng invasive species na kayang-kaya magtrickle down sa mga farmers.
