Great encounter in Rome with filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky where he develops some of his major ideas on artistic creation and in particular the importance of the temporal dimension in his conception of cinema. Tarkovsky also comments excerpts from film directors that inspired him like Kurosawa, Buñuel, Antonioni ...(Rome, end of 1982). From Donatella Baglivo ("Il cinema è un mosaico fatto di tempo", 1984).
The "prologue" at the beginning is a quote from Tarkovsky's Film "Andrei Rublev" (Part 3: "The Passion According to Andrei").

I'm confused; isn't he speaking before an audience of Italians? Yet there's no translator. As smart as he was and having lived all over Europe, he spoke only Russian

He never REALLY lived all across Europe, he loved his motherland an always was willing to return home. EVERY his visit to a foreign country had been reported and controlled by government. It took a year for him to go to Osaka for app. 30 seconds of a road for 'Solaris'. So it was with his Italian films. "Nostalgy" has a lot of his feelings during this moment, when USSR didnt let his son and wife move to him for a couple of years. And, despite all this censure, he knew Italian, he could fluently talk with Tonino Guerra.
@MelissaGesseler
@MelissaGesseler 7 жыл бұрын
i dont really think its that big of a deal that he only spoke Russian here. The audience understood because there is in fact a translator and besides that and probably most importantly people tend to be able to express themselves best in their native language.. in fact i think its kind of weird that you assume he should be talking to them in italian or whatever about a deep subject like that
@tatianaabramovskaya8765
@tatianaabramovskaya8765 6 жыл бұрын
"As smart as he was and having lived all over Europe, he spoke only Russian" He only lived for less than two years in Italy, and during that time had learned quite enough of it to work with italians (who do not speak anything but italian). He spoke quite passable English. And - no, he had NOT "lived all over Europe". Those were the very last years of his life. He announced on July 1884 that he does not intent to return to Russia, he died the 29 of December 1986. How many years does it leave to him to learn "all of them european languages"? And - no, being a polyglot is NOT a sign of extraodinary intelligence either. And - yes, you ARE confused.

Tatiana, that was absolutely the best crush (truly argumented) comment I have ever read. It isn't hard to understand that this guy has a limited capacity of feeling art and has a not so high iq, but it is rather strange that he is obviously lost in a Tarkovsky video. I would like to know what brought him here actually. Если вы когда-нибудь поедете в Белград, пожалуйста, позвоните мне. Независимо от вашего возраста. Поцелуй для тебя, Татьяна. Партизан - Cska навсегда братья P.S. If the world was really a place, like little Jon here thinks, then since i know fluent Serbian and English, and a bit of Russian, ergo i MUST be smarter than Tarkovsky? Or even a better artist? Go read a book little Jon, even Bridges of Madison County, just go and read something...

@@taks359 I haven’t been pleased with recent years of cinema either but I do wonder, how many “bad” films came out in the past that just get forgotten in place of these masterpiece films. It makes me think that in the future maybe we’ll look back on now and only really remember the great films to come out. It seems to happen in music and I’m relatively new to film so maybe it won’t be the case but I think it’s a possibility. There’s still some fantastic pieces of art being released, it just feels harder to find through all the corporate slop

@@spiderjeff5845 directors like Kubrick, Tarkovsky or Fellini won't find the money to their movies nowadays. No one would put the money on these kind of movies. People now, almost only want " entertainment ". Umberto eco, an italian writer call this, the " comforting fiction ". You are passive, the movie come to you, and they are only made to comfort you. They don't give you a sense of understanding, or very little. This writer, says the complete opposite is the " problematic fiction ". You are active, you have to do an effort. It's the cinema of directors like Kubrick, Fellini, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Jacques Tati, Bresson, Sydney Lumet... Like its name, it's gonna create a problem to the audience in his/her vision of the world and human. This kind of cinema is dead. Once in a while you can see one but it's so rare.

Thanks for a great video. As I see, these English subtitles was translated from Italian, so, it's good, but I could create English subtitles right from Andrey's Russian speech(cause I'm a native speaker), and, by my opinion, it would be better and more in depth. So, if someone interesting in it, just write it down at my comment's thread below.

This man is one of the supreme artists of cinema. But his argument concerning black and white vs. color film making reminds me of the argument that broke out between the opposing groups of the Poussinists and Rubenists during the Baroque age of painting which argued that line was more important than color in painting and vice versa. Is the head more important than the heart? I think you need both. I'm sure others will disagree because this duality that humanity carries with it usually causes us to align with one faction over the other. Still, beauty and depth can and does lie in all forms of art when you accept it for what it is and not for what you want it to be.
