I've been really enjoying the Naruto reactions. I don't know what it is, but for some reason seeing someone watching Naruto for the first time, and seeing their reactions almost mirror mine when I had first watched it, it makes me experience the same feelings I had back when i had first watched through the entire series. A lot of viewers heavily criticize Kurenai here, but her specialty is Genjutsu, the thing Itachi is literally world famous for. Essentially Itachi and Kisame both picked the fighter they were better equipped to face, which results in Kurenai and Asuma “looking bad”. Especially since most of the Leaf Village knows next to nothing about Itachi and Kisame.

It's not the fact that she lost to Itachi, Itachi makes everyone look bad anyway. It's the fact that Itachi is famous for genjutsu AND that he has a sharingan which sees through genjutsu in the first place that people mock her for deciding to use her genjutsu on him of all people. She even said "it's over" 💀. Realistically speaking, she would have known both of those things as a high-level Jonin in the Leaf who is familiar with the Land of Fire's bingo book. Not to mention Itachi and the Sharingan are just world famous at that point, being from the Leaf jsut makes it even more nonsenical. You really can't defend all of that in universe, it makes no sense that she would act this way. Kishimoto just wrote her in a way that made her look like an idiot, that's just how it is. As Raiju noticed, female characters get shafted a lot in Naruto and are given the spotlight way less often. Prob the single biggest flaw of the series despite it being great. "Itachi and Kisame both picked the fighter they were better equipped to face, which results in Kurenai and Asuma “looking bad” That is not what happened though. It was a 2v2, Kurenai was not 1v1ing Itachi at all. In fact, she cast her genjutsu on both Kisame and Itachi at the same time. First off, she should have just cast it on Kisame and not tried to hit Itachi with it at the same time. There was really no conciveable benefit to that when Itachi is obviously immune to her genjutsu. In fact, all it did was immedietly alert Itachi to the fact that she was using genjutsu when he felt the sensation, and then Itachi was able to reflect the genjutsu thanks to her targeting him alongside Kisame and the whole thing got flipped onto her. Not only that, but the fact that she went after Itachi instaead of Kisame AFTER she had ensanared them was a horrible decision. What she should have done was to use it only on Kisame, and then Itachi may have taken longer to realize she had cast a genjutsu on his partner and they MAY have been able to deal some damage to Kisame while he was in the genjutsu. Keep in mind whether or not it would have worked is not important, the point is it had a way higher theoretical success rate then what she tried. Even though they were horribly outmatched she still made all the incorrect decisions at every turn.

there are two bigger issues here: - Kishimoto hates women characters and won't make them fun - Kishimoto intended genjutsu to be equeal to tai/ninjutsu but later gave up on that and genjutsu/genjutsu users are extremely underdeveloped and except one particular op family and maybe 2-3 other characters no one really uses it and I think everyone chunin/jonin lvl knew who Itachi is. maybe not exactly how strong but he was in the bingo book, same for Kisame

Kurenai using genjutsu on one of the only characters who outclass her in genjutsu is wild on Kishimoto's part. I doubt it was a conscious decision but he really has a habit of hoeing his female characters 💀

I don't remember if this is a spoiler at this point or not: Kakashi is a former Anbu member, that (theoretically) puts him above the other jonin teachers in power by ranking... but yes Kakashi is also just that much better than Asuma and Kurenai. Sharringan OP

Next time you feel useless, just remember Kurenai tried to put ITACHI under a genjutsu. I know that will not mean much to most people, but the people who know the truth about Itachi, just laughed their asses off. Just saying, you would have better luck trying to drown a fish than putting an Uchiha under a genjutsu.
