It was honestly an eye-opener to check out “We Are Who We Are”. I could understand why Grazer recommended it to me when I previously conversed with him in September because the complex storyline and how he and the cast portrayed their characters in realistic situations was graspable to me.
When I told Grazer that I saw a lot of myself in Fraser Wilson on the show, what I meant was that I have several things in common with him that compelled me to feel that I can relate to him. We’re both fond of poetry and literature, are unable to assimilate in peer-created communities properly nor go with the flow so we’d rather keep to ourselves, and we’ve both occasionally made decisions that not everyone in our lives was thrilled with. I was that one kid that shied away from extracurricular activities and only joined a sports team because my parents would rather see me socialize with others than stay home all the time. It wasn’t until I went to community college and attended a liberal arts university to pursue my bachelor’s degree did I manage to socialize at my own accord. I’m grateful that I fought tooth and nail to enroll in ECSU because the constant expectation to apply critical thinking in my research and question everything shaped me into a strong-willed, passionate individual that I am today. Don’t get wrong. I enjoyed my junior and senior years in high school because it was at this point in time where I took my coursework more seriously. I saw huge improvements in my reading comprehension, the curriculum in my English classes and the teachers that taught them were more encouraging of my creative writing, and last but not least I took a 3D animation course where I met my former substitute teacher. I’ve lost touch with him over time, but am grateful for the life lessons he taught me.
Three days before this session, I was taken to an emergency room because I had a seizure at work. I forgot to take my medication that day, which until now was a common mistake. I thought I could tough it out until I could get home and can take my pill, but my seizures are often unpredictable and by the time I know they’re coming, it is too late to prevent them. I’ve never felt more desolate by the time the hospital discharged me and I no longer felt welcome for a while so a new episode of “We Are Who We Are” were the only aspects of the rest of that week I found comfort in. For Grazer to react the way he did when I told him how I perceived him was unexpected, but in light of what I’ve been dealing with, I couldn’t feel more valued. The sincerity and compassion in his words is the reason why I don’t take pure vitriol to heart anymore.
