If you are planning your first Camino, do you have any concerns about meeting other people? Or if you are a Camino veteran, maybe you have other tips to share? Introverts particularly, can often be concerned I think.

Hi Rob, You are my favorite video re Camino. Very helpful info and pleasant to watch. Planning my first camino in Oct alone at 72 years. Camino Frances, starting Pamplona and walking 1 month, want to walk slowly with rest days and exploring towns, may not make it to Santiago, but the journey is the goal

This was a great - very inclusive - watch. Many people talk about the social parts of the Camino - making it seem unsuitable for people like me: extreme introvert with autism. I'm still not sure whether I would be able to manage it, especially with the way albergues are portrayed. But I would love to progress from endlessly researching the Camino to actually being on the Camino.

Maybe try it. Just a short one. Choosing an accommodation type that is least pressure for you. I have a very close family member with Autism and so understand the challenges it can create for you. You'll never know............if you never go 🙂

Do you find that most people walk in groups or alone? What percentage of folks you encounter are walking alone? Walking alone in a foreign country seems like it could be scary or dangerous. I was wondering if you have ever met anyone who walked the Camino and then walked backwards to their starting point? Anyone ever go backwards? These videos are so great.
@robscamino

Always hard to come up with those kinds of stats. If we count 'encounters' with a small group as 1. A couple as 1. And someone walking alone as 1. Probably 15-25% of my 'encounters' were with people walking alone! Obviously as the percentage of overall Pilgrims it would be lower. But it's hard to tell, as the small groups would often be made up of Pilgrims who only met along the way. So that increases the number! Ultimately, how many start walking alone? Quite a lot. See these videos: Walking alone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roWUdoOnbbNjrJY Solitude: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2evlWmohZ6LaK8 Common Fears: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3a0l4VvfNuCZ5Y Scary and dangerous? Not at all. Pilgrims have walked these routes for over 1,000 years. The local communities are very supportive of the Pilgrims, with many communities only able to survive because of the business the Pilgrims bring. And on a route like the Camino Frances, quite frankly it's hard to be totally alone! If you are scared of getting lost.......that too is VERY hard. You just follow the yellow arrows. (and there are usually people in sight ahead of you) Some do walk backwards though not many. It was traditional to walk the Camino from your home, and then walk home again. I have only met two doing it. There are also two challenges with walking backwards. (1) All the arrows and signs are orientated for walking 'towards' Santiago. and (2) Everyone you meet will tell you you are walking the wrong way! I think hearing that 200 times a day could get tiresome ! 😀 You might want to read my Blog from my first Camino. It's in date order, so it starts at the beginning. Makes it easier to read. Lots to read, plus photos and videos. It should put your mind at rest. robscamino.com/2015/blog/

@@robscamino Rob, thank you so much for your patient and detailed replies, they are so interesting and informative to read. Your blog looks very interesting, and I will indeed read through it. It sounds like you first heard of the Camino from the movie. I would probably never have heard of the Camino if not for that movie. It sounds like the economy of Spain might owe that movie and you a debt of gratitude. ;-)

Happy to help where I can. It's totally selfish of course, because it allows me to talk endlessly about the Camino 😄 But if my videos help just one potential Pilgrim overcome their hesitation and walk a Camino, and have an amazing experience, it's worth it. Because it really can be life changing.

Hi Rob, my wife an I completed a leg from Leon to Santiago around 4 years ago but we are planning to do the whole Camino Francis next year in 2023 April-May. Would you have any concerns about doing the walk at this time with what has been happening in the world. Any additional tips for walking over the Pyrenees in mid April? Thanks
@robscamino
@robscamino 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Owen. Regarding World issues, who really knows. I think the best thing is to just plan to go, and make a final call nearer the time. I hope to be going around that time too, but on the VdlP. I have leant over the years, that if you wait to 'get all your ducks in a row' before taking action.......we never do 🙂 As for the time of year? I have always crossed in the last week of April (well twice so far). Once was crisp, blue skies and sunny. Once was cold, wind, rain. Both times there was still a bit of snow around near the top. Again, I would say. just plan and book. No one knows what the weather will be like on the day. Check with the Pilgrims office in St Jean the day before. Check some weather apps etc. If the weather is bad, take the Valcarlos route. On the Napoleon route, as you go over the top is can be quite exposed to wind, rain etc . And remember that temperature drops with altitude. Very roughly 6.5C per 1,000 metres increased height. Or another way. 9C colder at the top of the Napoleon route as compared to down at St Jean. Depending on age/health/ fitness you might want to break the first day into two. You could stop at Orrison or Borda overnight www.gronze.com/etapa/saint-jean-pied-port/roncesvalles , or use the mountain shuttle (it can take you back down to St Jean after day 1 and back up to your start point on day 2. (see half way down page on link) www.expressbourricot.com/persons-transport/ Hope that all makes sense. Do ask if not.

thanks Rob, yeah we have waited to long since the last trip so keen to go again. We averaged about 20-30km per day last trip and I think we are reasonably fit for our mid fifties👍 Would love to see the snow walking over the Pyrenees but more keen just to meet the lovely people you meet on the way and de-stress, thanks

Hi Rob, sorry for all the questions, sharing and assisting others is a fantastic job you are doing, really appreciate your help. With your experience thus far doing the French way, did you fly in and out of the same cities in Europe coming from Australia. Did you mix it up and try different experiences and which was the best? Which was the easiest way getting to SJPP from each visit? Once again I apologise for all the questions it is fantastic that you are willing to share👍

@@owenbull9606 Always happy to answer questions. I have flown into Paris twice and Madrid once. Both can work well. I think I prefer Paris though. Fly to Paris, train to Bayonne, train or minibus to St Jean.

Buses and trains to make a deadline for a plane? Yes, depending on the route that should be possible. But if you are walking to Santiago and want a Compostela, you must walk the final 100 kms. (200 kms for a bike)
