JAWS CORNER
Stone Town, the old city center of Zanzibar island, has a small courtyard where four narrow streets intersect. It's called Jaws corner.
Jaw's Corner is a unique square where locals gather to chat early in the morning over a cup of black Zanzibar coffee. Grab a cup of coffee and listen to the stories of the locals. Locally this place is called Soko Muhogo
Jaws corner has become a meeting point for local people and tourists from early morning to late evening, which emerged when an elderly Zanzibarian opened a coffee stall. Well, why is it called the Jaws corner? There are many rumors, but this is the most popular. In the past, hunting sharks were sold in this square. When one of the Zanzibar artists painted a shark on a blank wall, first the tourists and then the locals started to call it Jaws corner. The picture changes every year.
Coffee is brewed with two stainless steel kettles over a small charcoal stove. It is drunk in small handleless porcelain cups.
Sit back while sipping your coffee and watch the endless stream of pedestrians, bikes and motorcycles moving through the courtyard. Local guys sit at the edge of the square discussing everything from Somalia to the Champions League final to Zanzibar's quest for freedom and why they didn't buy Hooper's boat. Ok, maybe not the last one.
We come here every time we have free time and spend our time here.
Stone Town is a city of significant historical and artistic significance in East Africa. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, presents a unique blend of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements, reflecting the diverse influences underlying Swahili culture. For this reason, the town was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000.
