@@jasminecrawford42 I'm assuming that Tristan's younger brother obviously didn't see him that way but having said that, I would hope(even though it appeared that he was) that Samuel wasn't blind and oblivious to the fact that his brother's a good-looking dude and how most straight women would react to being around him. It appears that Samuel was somewhat naive-one because of his unrealistic attitude of what could possibly happen to him in joining the military and going off to war and two,in introducing to his girlfriend to his good-looking wild, older brother(who I think can fairly be assessed as being the ''Bad Boy''/renegade-type in the movie.

Man, this movie has such a nostalgic, sweet, romantic but also realistically painful and dramatic feel to it. The atmosphere with the breathtaking landscapes, the wholesome relationship of the brothers, and the gorgeous soundtrack are all so beautiful and charming. But then the tragedy of war, death, grief, envy, unrequited love, infertility, regret... So painful. Just like with James Dean in “Rebel without a cause” and others. We can’t help falling in love with him as a person as well not only his looks even if that and the rest was a hit ofc.

Interesting comment. I think she had a more motherly love for Samuel, being a bit of a teacher to him. With Tristan it was a more sexual, yin and yang love, balancing each other out and being both teachers to each other. Not to fall into clichés but her trying to tame his wild side a bit and him giving her the freedom to explore her sexuality and passion, just her overall self-identity as his equal. The only reason it didn't work out is because Tristan's wound of losing his baby brother was too fresh, which made him too unstable to commit to a balanced, grounded relationship that had all the potential, but not the right timing. Marrying Alfred she sort of retreated to the more passive role of a woman back in those days and all her self-discovery work and growth, perhaps painful but necessary, was undone, ending up in that other cliché, the gilded cage, Alfred regaining control of her self-identity, her living by his fancy rules in his big fancy empty house. The fact that they didn't have children only made the void that much worse. Not only had he taken her sense of self away again, he also couldn't help her fulfil the role of a mother. Which was sort of her last chance at giving some sense to her life and at some happiness. When she saw Tristan with his own family and met little Samuel I guess in her mind everything came full circle. The love she had always wanted to give was wasted and she must have felt like a failure, pushing her to that desperate final act.

Tiona Lee She didn't cause the family to fall apart Samuel trying to be like daddy dearest did. He was like a puppy chomping at the bit wanting to be his fathers mini me. The Colonel was just trying to shield his sons from it. Susannah's fault was falling for the wrong brother because Tristen is kinda like the bad boy he had her then dumped her. The Colonel told her she could stay on till spring when spring came she should've left. Maybe a little it is her fault because she moved in on Tristen while he was still grieving over his baby bro Susannah should've backed off to let him deal with his pain. But no, she had to get with Tristen while he was vunerable (sorry for the misspelling) it didn't help matters that Alfred blamed Tristen for seducing Susannah out of spite which Tristen didn't.

That's his brother. If he had a child with his wife then would the child never meet his uncle? It doesn't work like that in the real world lol. Attractive people have a life too.. It's about trust and being committed to a relationship.

This is probably the best acting performance Pitt has done in his entire career. LOTF is his best film in my opinion. Plus, I'm not ashamed to say that he looked real handsome in this flick too.

When I watched this first time, of course I totally agreed with Susannah who couldn't help loving Tristan. Now I Watched again decades later, as a woman, I would love Alfred or Samuel instead. My dad who was a free and wild soul just like Tristan made my mom and family miserable. BTW, I LOVED Julia Ormond in the movie. She is perfect!

Yeah, it's bittersweet to watch the first few scenes of this lovely family when you know they get fucked so bad later.

The way this scene foreshadows the tragic romance between Tristan and Susannah is masterful. The camera turns to Tristan riding in from a distance, looking as wild, untamed and mesmerizing as the landscape around him, projecting an aura of mystique. Then the camera turns back to Susannah who, completely transfixed, with a sparkle in her eyes and magical delivery of one simple line, "So, this is Tristan!?" conveys the incredible and almost inevitable magnetic attraction between her and him. Wonderful cinematography and acting!

I watched this when it first came out not really knowing what it was about. I was 15. I was utterly swept away through all the emotion so much it still lingers after more 30 years. I saw this on Netflix and couldn't make myself watch it again and go through all that rollercoaster. Just shows what a great movie it was I suppose.
