FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: What software do you use to make your videos?
A: I use Windows Live Movie Maker to create my animations.
Q: What camera do you use?
A: The camera I use is a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
Q: What software do you use to edit your videos?
A: All effects are done manually without the use of editing. I occasionally use Photoshop to do minor things such as color correcting certain frames.
Q: How many Frames Per Second do you use?
A: Most of my stop motions run at 0.09 - 0.06 seconds per frame.
Q: What music is in the video?
A: Music: "Raining" by Kai Engel
Q: How do you get figures to walk?
A: I frequently use an adhesive material called "sticky tack" whenever I am positioning a figure to walk or when I'm having trouble balancing it.
Q: How did you get so good? How do I improve?
A: The ONLY way to improve your stop motions is to continue practicing. I've been doing stop motions (off and on, mostly off) for about 3 years to get to my current capabilities.
Here (below) are a few key beginner mistakes and fixes.
1a. Light flicker - individual images' lighting doesn't match perfectly, therefore, when the pictures are played quickly together, it appears as though the stop motion is flickering.
2a. How to fix the issue:
- Close off all sources of light (especially natural light from the sun).
- Position a lamp pointing onto your stop motion set.
- Added benefit -- Lighting is a principle element of composing intriguing stop motions.
1b. Unnecessary or unwanted camera movements that cause the stop motion to appear as if it is violently shaking.
2b. How to fix the issue:
- Use a tripod to hold your capture device. A tripod also enables you to position your camera from (almost) any angle.
- If not a tripod, then tape your camera into place
- If not tape, then use a form of sticky tack or similar substance.(tape/sticky tack may damage or leave residue on certain surfaces, use your personal discretion to decide if it is necessary).
1c. Not implementing properties of physics - To make a stop motion appear real, you'll have to apply the concepts of real life to it.
2c. How to fix the issue:
- You don't need a Master's Degree in physics.
- Understand that objects accelerate and decelerate (in stop motion, this is occasionally referred to as "easy-in and easy-out)".
- An object moving slow requires MORE images and as it moves faster (hence accelerates) it needs LESS pictures. When the entity comes to a stop, slowly take more and more images until it is no longer moving.
- This is unrelated to acceleration and deceleration, but figures shouldn't perform an action that requires force without some sort of
prior action to prepare for it. For instance, if a figure jumps it shouldn't simply propel forward. First, it must bend its knees and then swing its arms backwards in order to prepare to thrust itself into the air.
If you have any other questions and things of that nature, please leave a comment below! :D

Hey guys! This project was meant to actually be a story using that mech-thing you see at the beginning, but I decided to just give up because I'm lazy and ran out of inspiration to continue it... Anyways, this was created about 6 months ago, it's just that I procrastinated posting it because I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue it or not. Since I won't be continuing the story behind these tests, I decided to finally post it! Enjoy! -Dawson

I've been working on a short story for Halo throughout this semester. Over the summer I plan to FINALLY make a story. If all goes smoothly and the Halo short story is complete, I might branch out and make something different. A looong time ago I had a story idea for two "hunters" that were tasked on hunting down wild mechs... That was all I had for the idea, but I have a few scenes lying around of a tiny praying mantis shaped mech. I'll post those if you want me to! :) -Dawson

I've got some questions. 1. How and what do you do to light you're set. 2. Do you use a table cloth for your background. 3. How do you light the muzzle flash. Keep up the good work.: )
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 8 жыл бұрын
Salutations Atelier! Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I usually try my best to respond to everyone within a day, but your comment hadn't shown up... Odd. Anyways, here are the answers to your questions! 1. I use a single lamp. Some people tend to use multiple sources of light (e.i. key light, fill light, back light), but I generally only use one light. The rationale of this is because a) I only have one lamp and b) a single light can produce interesting and dramatic shadows. 2. My background consists of a black cardboard sheet. Since creating this animation, I decided to put more effort into making a proper "sky" as my backdrop to the stop motions. What I now use is a large white cardboard sheet which I painted. Pointing a portion of the lamp onto the cardboard will then bounce the light onto the set which in turn produces the appearance of a true sky. 3. The muzzle flashes are created using a transparent 1 x 1 circular yellow block. I take a modicum of blue sticky tack (any color works, it just so happens that mine is blue) and attach the piece to the end of the barrel. Make sure that it is approximately at a 90 degree angle to the gun. To generate the effect of the actual flash, take a flashlight and point it directly onto the stud. Take a picture, and there it is! :) Let me know if this information was helpful for you! -Dawson

Thanks for the feedback Roblox! I appreciate your honest opinion! The majority of these scenes had no story or thought put into them beyond "hey, I have some Mega Bloks figures, let's make them shoot guns and run around!". These were essentially "tests" (if you've been around my channel for a while, I consider almost everything a test... :P). Their only purpose was for me to experiment with various ideas. One of those ideas being a silhouetted character spinning a knife around... Nothing more, nothing less. Ultimately, I realized that I had no concrete idea _where_ these stop motions were going. There was no end goal in mind, and the only story I thought of felt fairly generic and boring. Losing interest in the subject, I cancelled the project. Many of the scenes here aren't in chronological order either. They were compiled in a fashion that would (sort of barely not really) convey a story. The story here is... There's a mech. A guy shoots some people. Runs around. Shoots his gun. Punches a guy... The end. I'm always searching for ways to improve my stop motions, so I enjoy the constructive criticism beyond what you may understand. Take care! -Dawson
@reconelite7185
@reconelite7185 7 жыл бұрын
Axiology Studios Ok, honestly I knew it was a test but I don't know, I can see the story (or what it was supposed to be) kind-of. It looks like he was going around with his teammate with a mech and then found an enemy outpost so the one guy got out and tried infiltrating it which is why he had to kill the guys and activate the password at the door near the end. Anyways, that's just what it looks like to me. See you in a different video! P.S actually I have been around your channel for a while since your videos are in my recommended section a lot and I didn't even realize but watched your videos a lot.

@woozproductions3023

I got a question senpai, well 2 questions. 1st question: the red marker for blood, does it come off the bricks? Or does the ink stay in the bricks 2nd question: how do you get rid of light flicker? Thanks! ;)
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Wooz! I use a cheap red marker that you can get at any store that sells markers. What I've found is that the marker tends to erase off of the figures quite easily. Though, if left on for too long, I did notice it tint them slightly pink. I had a few white colored pieces which I tested, and leaving the marker on them turned them a lightish red color, too. Light flicker is an interesting issue. The first step to avoid light flicker is to find out what's causing it, as there are various sources. One possible culprit is natural light (i.e. the light that comes from the sun). Sunlight shifts in intensity from time to time quite frequently, especially when there are clouds. To avoid this, either close off your room from all natural sources of light, or simply only make stop motions at night time. _The most essential thing you need to avoid light flicker is a lamp_. Preferably one that can be positioned, since it allows for your own creative freedom when making the composition of the scene. Another cause of light flicker may be your device's auto-adjustment features which change the camera's ISO, aperture, and depth of field. If your camera has the capabilities, certainly use manual settings. This gives you better control over your lighting. Last but not least, you might be suffering from reflected light, or perhaps your own shadows. In my older stop motions, I would notice that the blocks used to create my scenery are fairly glossy. Hence, there would be reflections all across them. Imagine every surface is a mirror, it's just some surfaces are better mirrors than others. To tackle this problem, try to point your lamp so that there's no light shining on you. As in, your shirt and hands. Even to this day, I occasionally have to fight against light flicker. It's a constant struggle, but I hope these tips will help you out! Let me know if you have other questions, I'm always happy to answer! :)

Thanks so much man! Are your lamps behind your camera?
@AxiologyStudios
@AxiologyStudios 6 жыл бұрын
My lamp is typically in front of the camera, or off to the side of the scenery. There's no one best place to put the light. The only restriction is to put it somewhere stable where you won't bump it, as moving the lamp while creating the stop motion would cause light flicker too!

Thanks Chris! I completely agree! The Destiny figures look incredible, and I'd love to make a stop motion with them! So far, I haven't been able to find any in stores though... As soon as I do, I'll surely make a stop motion with them! :) -Dawson

Hi Pulse! I've answered this question a few other times, so I'm going to simply copy and paste the answer if that's okay! " I believe the m4 is exclusive to the "Mega Bloks Terminator: Genisys T-1000" set. Moreover, the Terminator construction sets were (originally) only sold on Amazon.com. Here is a link to the set: www.amazon.com/Mega-Bloks-Terminator-Genisys-T-1000/dp/B00U3SSU88/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1469927211&sr=8-6&keywords=mega+bloks+terminator " Take care! -Dawson

Titan Fall was my main inspiration for the mech build, so to some extent the answer is yes. :)

@AxiologyStudios

Hey there Cian! I agree, the mech's animation was poorly done. Part of the reason was because it kept falling apart every time I moved it, and the second reason being that I was lazy. If I plan to make a mech move in the future, I will certainly put more effort into it. Thanks! -Dawson
