This Sega CD version has some interesting improvements in the audio quality!

If this game had a standalone Mega CD release it could have been fantastic. Maybe things like improved track details, each car (and not just the rival) having its own sprite...

Sega should've done something more with the CD version. The track detail on the arcade SMGP is so wonderful...surely they could have brought at least some of that over with help from the MCD's hardware scaling.

love the mega drive version more to the arcade,i was a big f1 fan back then and having the 1989 world championship on this was great, sure the teams are not official but the tracks are very much official to the line up of the 1989 f1 world championship, i think sega would have loved the full rights to f1 I think it would have made the game even more special, this was your codemasters f1 game of the 90s,its all there was decent at the time to call a simulator. the only gripe I have was the missing trackside polygons the arcade had,i guess they just couldn't emulate it fully.if they had put the odd crowd stand or a building or even the pit straight in I would have been happy enough, i think this could have been possible on the mega cd put all they did was port the mega drive version with better audio, missed opportunity.

This is kind of similar to Castlevania 3 on the Famicom. The game's the same but the music has been improved a little bit.

Castlevania III on Famicom also has improved sprites/backgrounds in some areas, and a lack of censorship.
