When I was very young, my Dad went on a trip to Japan and bought me a mega drive back with him, and around ten games with Japanese names that I had no clue of. This was one of them, and ended up being my favourite. I discovered later that the others were Rolling Thunder 2, E-Swat, Strider, Raiden Trad, Thunder Force 3, and a couple of others including a very strange puzzle game, the name of which escapes me. I have such fond memories of playing this game after school. The music gives me nostalgic goosebumps. 😁

Sort of like what eventually evolved into Puzzle Fighter, but much more engaging and fun IMO. I found a ROM of it since and was over the moon but i havent played it in years. I'm assuming it was a game native to Japan.

My dad bought a used Mega Drive/Genesis as a surprise when I was a kid. Among seven games this was one of them, it needed a special adapter cartridge to fit . Darius II was the other one requiring the adapter. The memories I have with this game, the console and my dad are incredible

Yeah Decap Attack is literally exactly the same game, except for the visuals. It's like a Romhack of this game, the game mechanics, playstyle, level layout, enemy behavior, object placement and behaviour, etc is all EXACTLY the same, down to the smallest detail, everything except the art for sprites and level objects and background. So it makes it very unique. I don't know of any other official game (i.e. not romhacks) that was kept exactly the same but the visuals were completely remade top to bottom, and only the visuals. There's games where the player character sprite is changed, like the Jetsons game for (I think) the SNES, but the background art and enemy sprites etc are all identical in appearance, it's ONLY the sprite of the character you're playing as that is changed, because the Japanese version of the game was based on an anime that wasn't broadcast outside of Japan, so they made this game based on the anime, and just changed the player sprite for the western market. They didn't change the art from top to bottom, only a single sprite. So not the same thing. I don't know of any other game that's ever done what Magical Hat/Decap Attack did. It's absolutely fascinating to me. But yeah there's plenty of Romhacks that do this, keep everything identical EXCEPT for the visuals. And they're always fun to play, if you have played the default game a lot. It changes the whole feel of the game, despite technically playing exactly the same. It's a bit like playing Sonic CD, but again even then, Sonic CD isn't quite the same thing. It's just the closest thing. In sonic CD there's time travel, and so you can go into the past version of the level before Dr Robotnik invaded and industrialised it, and you can go into either the good future or the bad future. Good future is based on you finding and destroying all the robot badnik creating machines in the level, and if you destroy all of them then you get the future, otherwise you get the bad future. It's the same exact level in terms of layout (except for the odd minor detail of level layout, but it's still like 95% the same in each time period), but the visuals of the level have completely changed (but all the sprites remain exactly the same, including Sonic). It's the same level, played in 4 different ways (it's 4 time periods because the present, the time period you start the level in, is the 4th one). So all the colours are different, all the design of the art, and even the music has changed in style/genre while still being the same song, like as if say a punk band covered a Beatles song, it's the same song but played in a very different style, punk, and that's what the music in all 4 time periods is the same song but covered/remixed into a new style/genre to fit with the vibes. And yeah it becomes mechanised and industrialised because the sonic games are the games with the strongest focus on raising awareness and activism against climate change and pollution etc of any game series in existence. So the further you get into the game in each Sonic game, the more dark and polluted and industrialised the levels become. Like compare Green Hill Zone with Scrap Brain Zone. Sonic CD is like that but for every single level. So, the past is mainly beautiful and mostly are items of nature like trees and grass. And the bad future is one where Robotnik has won and there's no trace of nature left, only machines. But yeah, it's still not quite the same thing as Magical Hat/Decap Attack. Because you play each version of the level at the same time because you travel between them. So it's not the same as the entire game being changed and the only way to play the other version is to stop playing that version of the game and start playing the other, you can't switch between each style at the same time.

I bought my Mega Drive second hand in 91 and had a bundle of games thrown in. This was one of them. There was a game swap shop down my road. Think I foolishly traded this game in for something lame before realising how cool but difficult this game was.

@@dranimations7902 this game IS Decap attack, just with all the sprites and backgrounds change to be spoopy. It's like Doki Doki panic being turned into Mario 2, except with that game it was just the character sprites changed to mario ones, everything else remained identical. When they turned _this_ game into Decap Attack they changed not only the sprites, but all the enemies, bosses, all the background art, all the platforms and obstacles, etc. The level design is all the same, it just looks completely different. It's crazy. Probably the only time that's every happened before Psycho Fox had the same engine and general idea of level design but it was a different game, the level design was different. But with this game, they changed the visuals for _everything_ Kid Cool for NES is also the same game as Psycho Fox I believe. Either way it's the same engine and play style etc as all these other games. The devs really loved this platformer so they managed to spin it off into 4 games. Crazy.

Yes, more or less. Also known as Decap Attack in the US for the genesis (which was exactly the same game as this except the visuals of EVERYTHING was completely remade to be very spooky). Also Kid Cool for the NES was this game, too. It's fascinating really. It's the same exact game but looks entirely different, it's like a romhack. When has that ever really happened other than with this game? Like, turning Doki Doki Panic into Super Mario Bros 2 was just a sprite swap, changing the characters to mario characters, but everything else like the levels and art remained exactly the same. This is not only the sprites being swapped but all the background art and enemy sprites and music and bosses and everything. It plays exactly the same, the level design is the same, but looks completely different. It's really unique in gaming, for sure. I genuinely can't think of any other examples of this occurring.

Psycho fox Kid cool Magic hat Decap Magic hat graphics are nice and colourful but a bit old fashioned,especially the general platforming tiles looking not much different to fox, backounds are really nice tho and has 1 good music track and not enough variety, decap music is way better and is simply more interesting visually with its horror theme and has more varied graphics tiles and more animated backgrounds Decap plays faster,jumping gravity is quicker and a faster top running speed (make sure you look at decap ntsc) Magic hat looks like an upgraded master system game with good backgrounds and its theme is fairly bland

Fernando, this game came first, and Decap Attack is literally the same game, just reskinned. This game was based off an anime that only aired in Japan, and so when they released the game outside of Japan they got rid of all the anime BS and replaced it with the decap attack stuff. But it's all made by the same developer
