With the elimination of Launch Octopus and ship traffic returning to normalcy, X is given new orders to infiltrate and raid Sigma's unfinished reconnaissance base stationed deep within the mechanical forest where former Maverick Hunter, Sting Chameleon acts as guardian.
This stage, compared to the rest we've gone through so far, is quite possibly the easiest of them all - in all fairness, it's the most straightforward stage in the whole game. This stage has also an environmental change upon defeating Launch Octopus prior to accessing it, which makes getting the Heart Tank easier. The sub-boss, which is optional, can be taken out faster with the use of the Storm Tornado; it may put up a fight for some, but it is actually a pushover. The armor upgrade that you receive upon defeating the sub-boss is the body part, which halves damage taken.
PS: The Snes9x has problems recording multiple transparencies.

BACKGROUND:
A former Maverick Hunter pertaining to the 9th Special Unit--known as the Ranger Unit--and modeled after a chameleon, Sting Chameleon was a rather sly and cunning Hunter whose tactics didn't suit well with his commanding officers. Although highly skilled, operating under stealth and relaying mostly on trickery in order to fulfill his goals made him stand out as a coward amongst his fellow Hunters, which in turn made Sting Chameleon feel ostracized and unappreciated. Being such a devious Reploid, Sting Chameleon felt respect only for those that could outsmart him and were seemingly stronger.
Once he heard about Sigma's rebellion, Sting Chameleon wasted no time in joining the cause after considering it a perfect opportunity to exert his methods and therefore receive proper merit. Being a former Ranger used to jungle-type environments, Sting Chameleon was ordered to protect a newly established base deep inside the mechanical forest.
MISCELLANEOUS:
• Although Recon Base Ruins / 探察基地の跡 is the official and most common name of this stage, it is also known as Forest Stage / 森林ステージ.
TRIVIA
• Contrary to common belief, Sting Chameleon was never infected by the virus; his attitude and personality was all him from the beginning. He joined Sigma seeking merit for his capabilities, which weren't exactly respectable to begin with.
• In the Mega Man X manga, Sting Chameleon is the third Maverick X faces. He's akin to his video game counterpart, except he's an actual coward who creates devices to control the nearby animals of the forest to do his biding. (Due note that this is a non-canon scenario.)
• In the Mega Mission carddas released by Bandai, Dr. Doppler revived Sting Chameleon. In it, he's remodeled and renamed Sting Chameleao L, where the 'L' stands for "limited". His appearance is changed, looking more like a Chamaeleo jacksonii (Three-horned Chameleon), showcasing a fiercer demeanor and seemingly upgraded weaponry. The design is sleeker, though bulkier, and of completely different colors. (Due note that this is a non-canon scenario.)
• One of Sting Chameleon's eyes is cybernetic, which alludes to his "sniper" traits being modeled after a chameleon.
