Only 8 years??!! QUITE an accomplishment! Have they started-or how far along is-the other new “super-bridge” nearby? Just finished watching it..I actually watched the video of the official opening this morning and am absolutely amazed at this engineering marvel! If the US ever decides to upgrade...or even fix, our outdated infrastructure, I hope they’ll request some of the brilliant Chinese engineers as consultants! Yet another place to add to my list when I’m able to join my Son over there for an extended visit! Every day, I see, hear and learn more about your beautiful country and understand why my Son was so obsessed with returning there to live and work. Congratulations for a job VERY well done!

Unfortunately we're too busy spending money on military complex bull crap instead of strengthening our infrastructure schools and Healthcare System which is the main core of this Great Society of ours in the last decade our military spending had quadrupled, trillions upon trillions of dollars!! China, the builder of the Great Wall of China, well you have surpassed yourselves in this magnificent bridge and a tunnel under water. Not only that, the two artificial islands way out of the mainland China into the ocean. I hope to be able to see a documentary of this whole project where I can put my questions to rest. Aiwen Li... That's what swedes and danes have done for 18 years now at Oresund bridge/tunnel. So this is nothing special to us. OK.. This one is much longer and wider, that's for sure. But only a bigger copy of something that was under construction between Denmark and Sweden from 1995 til opening for traffic in 2000..

@@AndySwede58 engineered for vastly different environments.the hk bridge is engineered different as it also has to withstand annually expected high frequency monster typhoons and earthquakes. A normal bridge in Europe generally isn't built to withstand numerous tropical typhoons every year. At least I don't think they have comparable tropical strength of typhoons in Scandinavia I think. 🤔

The Lake Pontachtrain Causeway is 23.8 miles long but you are correct with no tunnels or artificial islands. There is also the Chesapeake Bay tunnel bridge which is about 17 miles long that this bridge reminds me of it has several artificial islands and tunnels on it also.

This project is truly amazing, an insight into how clever humans can be. However, given that nature, and the elements of it, are clearly becoming more unstable and intense over the years, i think this is just playing into the unmerciful phenomenon that is, "the world as we know it".
