I am 53 years old and consider myself to be a high earner. My job provides me the option to contribute the employer contributions to my Roth 401k. Should I do that or should I continue to direct that to my Traditional 401k ahead of retirement?

As a high income earner can you easily afford to contribute max of $22,500 to your traditional 401(k) and towards retirement? What is your Federal Tax Bracket and percentage of company match? I f you don't know all this then its best you consult with an advisor.

Investing in Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after tax dollars, your contributions can grow tax-free over time. When you withdraw money from your Roth IRA in retirement, you won’t have to pay tax on it, which will help you keep more of your hard-earned money. I retired with 5 million dollars

I bet you didn't do that without a financial advisor. I’m also closing in on retirement, and I have benefitted much from using a financial advisor. I didn’t really start early, so I knew the compound interest of index fund investing would not work for me. Funny how I pulled in more profit than some of my peers who have been investing for many years.

This is such an important topic. I have family in FL and TX and I tell people all the time not to fall for the no income tax narrative. Both of these states have no income tax and my relatives always complain about their absurdly high property tax, sales tax and other various fees. You have to look at the total tax (and fee) picture, not just income tax.
@donovantobs
@donovantobs 5 ай бұрын
For sure! You need to think about all the taxes and fees, not just income tax. I think financial advisors can really help by looking at your whole financial picture, cutting down on any extra costs, and finding ways to handle property taxes smartly. This can take a load off homeowners, especially in places like FL and TX where taxes can be a bit tricky

You're absolutely right about the importance of having a financial advisor. When I moved from California to Texas as a businessman, my advisor handled stock trading for me, which enabled me to buy two homes valued at $1.8 million using the profits. Although Texas property taxes are similar to California's without Prop 13, not having to deal with California state income taxes has greatly boosted my financial situation.

Becoming a millionaire through a Roth IRA or a 401(k) involves different strategies for maximizing profits. A Roth IRA offers tax-free withdrawals in retirement, which can be advantageous if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in life. On the other hand, a 401(k) provides tax-deferred growth and potential employer contributions, boosting your savings. The optimal choice depends on factors like your current and future tax situation, employer match, and investment options. Consulting a financial advisor can help tailor a strategy that aligns with your financial goals and circumstances.
@CindyValenti

Prioritizing effective personal finance management holds greater significance than the sheer amount saved, irrespective of income source. Consulting a certified financial advisor can offer tailored strategies to optimize financial results by reducing expenses and enhancing income, regardless of whether it's earned through employment or investments.

I am new to the stock market. Every stock that I bought so far, I was out of luck because I bought them when they were expensive. I feel I missed out on all the stock opportunities so far for the tech stocks.I believe having 150K yearly income would be a good investment so I want to plug all my savings into the stock market. I know this sounds a bit dull but I would like to know if I should learn investing or let somebody else (more capable like a FA) do it for me? Please share your thoughts. I am kind of tired of searching for a good stock to buy and losing all the good opportunities

There is also no earned income requirement to convert to a Roth. As long as you have a balance in an IRA, in theory, you can keep converting to a Roth as long as you like. so i can perceive the preference for 401(k)'s, I still want to know how best to compound at least $2m in retirement savings.

Fortunately, I had a college economics teacher that taught me a lesson at 18. That lesson was: for every huge, frivoluos purchase you make, you need to have an investment double it's worth, this doesn't necessarily mean you should always invest when you make a purchase, it simply means living within your means. Varied sources of income is wise and especially like i said, living within your means. Whenever you're about to make a huge, dumb purchase that doesn't add value think about taxes and how you get your income. I made $272k combined net last year and paid no Federal taxes.

It's recommended to save at least 15% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

At any age when you convert to ROTH IRA from 401k, IT WILL CREATE A TAX BILL, Which will add to your taxable income. You can convert any amount from IRA to Roth IRA but the amount you convert to ROTH will be added to your taxable income for the year, which can push your income to a higher tax bracket. To my understanding back door Roth is allowed as long as you pay tax on it in the year you have converted to ROTH, once it goes to ROTH it will grow and withdraw tax-free

Not tracking on one point. Rolling over the after-tax is slam dunk because now it’s got Roth benefits. But rolling over the pre-tax 401K to Roth makes it taxable on that Day 2. The benefits of pre-tax are that a) you build returns from the taxable portion too, b) you’re in a higher tax bracket now and lower bracket when you need the money. So to me, rolling over the pre-tax portion now and paying taxes in your highest bracket doesn’t seem like a slam dunk decision. If you do so when young or expect really high returns, maybe. But if you’re 50 and working in a high tax bracket with fewer years to invest before withdrawing, maybe not.

@@fahlou2019 let's say for backdoor roth, you want to put in $6k into your (traditional/roll over) IRA and move that $6k into roth IRA because you already paid income tax on that $6k. Let's assume your (traditional/roll over)IRA account already had $10k (pretax savings) from previous years. If you want to move your $6k (already paid income tax for it) from rollover IRA to roth IRA, you will also need to move 100% of that pre-existing $10k in your rollover IRA account to your roth IRA account and pay tax on that pre-existing $10k.

If you only want to move 50% of that pre-existing $10k to roth IRA (just because you don't want to pay tax for all $10k this year, then you can only move 50% of the $6k (that is $3k) can be moved to roth IRA as a backdoor roth.

This is all true. And I have been doing all of this since 2010 (that is when I figured this out!). I have a TIP!! Regarding the Plain Back Door (the $7,500/$6,500 for 2023 in the example). I also had some Pretax IRAs (Pretax means you deducted them on your taxes). Before you do any conversion of your After-Tax IRAs, you need to get rid of your pretax IRAs; otherwise, your Back door Roths will be partially taxable. One way to do this is ask your employer if they allow Rollover contributions to the 401K. I rolled my Pretax IRAs into my 401K, problem solved!

The challenge and what most Americans seem to fail to understand is that unless you/your family is rich, you -always- need to be making more money. It sounds so simple, but so many people get comfortable with their day-to-day lifestyle that the lose sight of what matters in the long term. If someone doesn't have a pension from their workplace, they should be making enough to maximize their traditional/roth 401k, maximize their traditional/roth IRA, fully prepay a 529 plan for their children, and still be able to have enough money to live the lifestyle that they need/want.

You'd better be making good six-figure money to take advantage of most of this. But max out your company 401k - do it as a Roth if you can - and also make the individual Roth on top of that - $6500 or $7500 depending on your age - and you're accumulating $30k+ per year just doing that. And that ain't beanbag, as Jack would say. It helps if you have extra money lying around. A lot.

Investing in Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after tax dollars, your contributions can grow tax-free over time. When you withdraw money from your Roth IRA in retirement, you won’t have to pay tax on it, which will help you keep more of your hard-earned money. Compounding is the process of earning interest on your initial investment, as well as on the interest that investment earns. This means that over time, your investment can grow exponentially. So the earlier you start investing, the more time your investment has to grow through compounding.

In order to do the back door contribution, you can only have one traditional IRA open. You have to have to be able to report $0 cost basis to the IRS. So, if you have multiple traditional IRAs (e.g., you rolled a 401(k) over from a previous employer), you will need to roll over those accounts to your current employer's traditional 401(k) plan. That way, when you make your traditional IRA contribution and then do the ROTH conversion, you can report a $0 cost basis. The IRS considers all open traditional IRA when calculating the cost basis. Some brokerage firms allow you to convert immediately. You do not want to leave the money in the traditional IRA long enough to earn a dividend, interest, or a capital gain. Otherwise, you will have a tax liability. Before you make a back door contribution/conversion, please do talk to an accountant first.

Our 401(k) fiduciary replied this would not work for our company: The most important is that it negates the “deemed to pass” results that come from utilizing the safe harbor provisions for the Average Deferral Percentage (ADP) and Average Contributions Percentage (ACP) tests. Any after-tax contributions would be subject to the ACP test. Depending on who decides to make those contributions, if not enough non highly compensated employees (NHCE’s) also fund that contribution, those who did fund would have to take refunds subject to taxation as the test would fail. Anyone who would fund the After-tax would first have to fund the maximum of the annual deferral limit. Most NHCE’s would not have enough money to fund the maximum deferral and then additional after tax contributions.
