SCRAPCHAT live premiers will now be on Sunday at 9 or 10pm
Scrapchat 122: 9th June 2024: Time to clear some of the electrical waste back log, found some nice buts and had a laugh while doing it! Also, took apart a pesky item we see littering our streets and got a bit of a surprise.
If you are new here, I can't currently commit to a regular livestream due to my daughters complex needs so I try to do a regular weekly scrap chat premier as a way of chatting and keeping in touch with you guys whilst showing what I've been up to during the week. I was away for over a year nursing my youngest who had cancer but he devastatingly passed away in December 2023. Life is very tough, grieving for a child is the worst pain imaginable, but I am determined to carry on for the others and find joy in the thigs I can, because life is short and my promise to Benny is that I am not going to waste it!! I need to have some stories to tell him when we are all back together again!! Many of you know that Benny wasn't my biological child, but I raised him and loved him as my own, he is my great nephew who I took on when my sister passed away, but I couldn't love or miss him any more than I do right now and I'll honour him for the rest of my life!
I also am a bodycam girl, it isn't for everyone, if you get dizzy or seasick them bodycam isn't for you! I've tried a tripod on my bench but it just isn't practical, I don't have the space, hopefully when I get my bigger workshop next year I can set up a tripod and lose the bodycam, but for now I work with what I've got!
I'm fully licenced for my area and ask prior permission for items inside skips and so far nobody has ever said no, they want the extra space :) I still do quick dives to avoid passing comments, especially as I'm usually out in the evening.
Some lovely people have asked to send me the odd gift, to avoid us both extra fees (shipping for you and forwarding address fees for me) I have, like many finally set up an Amazon wish list. If there is something you would like to send that isn't on my list, then email me on the address on my about page and I'll add the product in if it's available on amazon UK. Any gifts to my forwarding address are of course still welcome and very much appreciated too!! You can email me on the address on my about page. Lots of resin moulds on my wish list too ;)
www.amazon.co....
Sometimes Amazon plays up and my address doesn't come up in other territories or with non amazon products. If this happens but you still want to get me something off of my list you can send me a friends and family PayPal and tell me what to purchase. You may have to work out the cost in other currencies. I'll do a video shout out when they arrive 🙂

Hey Sollers, great video as usual! I had a huge scrapalanche today, I had about ten monitors stacked up. They've been there for weeks, all of a sudden there was a creak and a groan and they just toppled over. Right in the middle a huge spider had made itself at home, it honestly looked as shocked as I did!!! 😆

Be careful with "used" Lithium-Ion batteries from vapor cartridges (or rather any kind of Lithium batteries). The vast majority still hold a charge! This can be dangerous stuff. When the wires are snipped off, there's no protection against short cutting. Lithium batteries are notoriously known to catch fire when stored; a fire you can't put out with water! To render them safe for storage: Take two pieces of mono strand copper wire, remove 1 cm of the insulation from each end of the wires, place the end of the wires on the plus and on the minus terminals respectively, use a clamp to keep them tight or place the battery upright with something like a piece of wood on top to keep the wires in place for stable connection. The wire ends are then submerged (with some space between them) in a 12% salt solution (NaCl is commonly used, KCl is better). The discharging is faster in a 20% salt solution, but it'll "eat" the end of the copper wire rather fast (electro deposition from anode to cathode). A higher concentration of the solution enables a faster discharge but also imposes a risk of sudden ignition of Lithium batteries. Caution: Dont use a solution that strong for larger Lithium batteries as they'll discharge way too fast and become dangerously hot. The really powerful Lithium batteries, like those inside the small boxes used for jumpstarting cars must initially be discharged in short 10 min intervals until the level of the remaining charge have dropped significantly. Those batteries are so powerful that you can actually spot weld thin steel plate with a full charged battery. Common alkaline batteries are just spread out in a thin layer at the bottom of a flat tub. A salt solution of 10% is added and they're left overnight. This type of batteries must be fully discharged before the hydrometallurgical recovery of Manganese and Nickel. Biproducts are the iron cases and the PET plastic foil. The latter is converted into Benzene to be used as solvent for various recovery procedures. Lithium-Ion batteries are valuable. I recover the Lithium as Lithium Carbonate from all such batteries. Biproducts are very valuable Cobalt and Nickel. What a pity you just throw away 90% of the values of your scrap material. Everything on a Printed Circuit Board is worth money, no matter how small the PCB is. Every component is money if you process it at home. Even the bare boards are valuable! I make £ 100,000 a year just on e-waste, and the same amount on other scrap material. Further, every single bit of scrap plastic is valuable. All small pieces, even tiny crumbles are equal to money. Whatever can't be sold for recycling can easily be converted to free petrol/gasoline for your car, free diesel for your truck, and free fuel for heating your workplace/metal melting furnace. The small glass panel screens contain Indium and Tin. All solder contains mainly Tin. Remember: Tin is worth at least four times more than copper!

I do keep a lot of components for creations too and sell my boards to the refiners, but they won't take low grade. I Cherry pick the base metals and components like ceramic caps, MLCCs and ICs etc but the ones with nothing on are not saleable here as anything other than shred. Where are you based, there are no buyers for most of what you mentioned where I am or anywhere near so I'd be interested to know where you sell to, good to have options!? I have an explosion/ fire proof carrier for my batteries. I hate them, there are no buyers for those here either and they have to go off for free but at least they get recycled and out of my way because I know how nasty they can be, thanks for the info on discharging them. Last time I went to the refiners tin was £30000/ton. 👍

@@SollersScrappingandDiving. I've never sold a single Printed Circuit Board. 12 years ago I grabbed a screwdriver and started scrapping at my desk in the living room. Today I'm a full time scrapper/refiner still working at home in my garden shed. However, I had to get a 400 m2 high ceiled storage facility. It's always stocked with a least 100 tons of end-products and some raw materials. In the beginning I just collected the PCBs Three years later I started processing them manually; not very effective. I soon found out that the way of making decent money was in processing them hydrometallurgical. Today nothing is wasted, every single bit is turned into saleable good end-products. I no longer do manual disassembling. I've built different apparatuses, various devises, and machines for mechanical processing. I've found that the most effective way of initial processing is pyrolysis, which separates out all metal parts for further processing. I scrap everything from cars, trailers, camping vans, old machinery, electrical equipment, solar cell panels (contain REEs (Rare Earth Elements)), e-waste, and anything containing metals (all the way down to things like fx. disposable lighters). Sales of larger quantities are done through agents/representatives who are then shipping internationally. Small quantities are easy to sell privately. International buyers are not interested in let's say 200 g of Germanium, but home "scientists" are. Gold, Silver, and to a certain degree Platinum and Palladium can be sold to refiners but is much better paid if sold privately. Hobby jewelers, element collectors, and home "scientists" are happy to buy in small quantities. A lot of private buyers want uncommon elements like Indium, and hard-to-find REEs, as well as PMs like Rhodium, Ruthenium, and Iridium. I also sell lots of Bromine recovered from PBCs, where it's used as Fire Retardant. Let me know when you're ready to increase your income considerably by processing PCBs / selling recovered Tin, and I'll provide information of the hydrometallurgical process I use. The real money lies in not throwing anything away, and instead extract virtually all the values. That's how big recycling companies make millions every year!

@@zero-waste what a great set up you must have, very interesting! I used to totally depopulate boards and sell components by the KG privately, but now I have a refiners I just cherry pick before selling the boards too. All other metals get saved or sold to the scrapyard and everything else goes to the recyclers so nothing actually gets thrown away/ goes to waste as such. As a working Mum of 4 and with a disabled daughter and very limited space at home I'm never going to be able to do it on your scale but it sounds wonderful. Shame you don't have a KZbin channel to show the business scale refining end of the spectrum, it would be a fascinating watch. Thank you for all of the information!
