Mega Ukulele Comparison: “Amazon” Ukuleles

I have been wanting to record blind test comparison of many of the “Amazon” ukuleles I have reviewed on my channel, holding on to many of these ukuleles for the review. Many thanks to my son, Luke, for helping me with this review. Ultimately, a couple of ukuleles don’t make it into the comparison…but that’s okay, and you’ll get the idea. This is a lot of ukuleles to play and compare, by feel and sound, in a short amount of time.

A much appreciated assessment of good value ukuleles. I have or have had several of them. One, the Flight concert, was not a favourite despite having and liking the soprano version very much but a second one was noticeably better sounding. My red Enya Nova U is one I like for its sound, appearance and playability. The Pickapick is nice and is much improved with new fluorocarbon strings (eg Martin 600’s). I have been debating reducing my collection to four, each of a different size. The Martin was on my acquisition list for a concert and you have made that decision easier. Thanks for that. This is the first “mass testing” review I have ever seen!

Interesting, the Nova mini is one of my favorites... Just put a low g on one of mine. I've never been satisfied with any of the cheap wood ones off Amazon I've tried so far, love Enya woods though. Might have to ride that 🐎.

Don’t get me wrong; I LOVE (emphasis added) my Enya Novas, particularly the concerts. It might be my favorite ukulele and the one that I would keep if I had to sell all others. But when you play it blindfolded against nearly any laminate ukulele, the laminate is going to have a better sound. I’m okay with that; it is a plastic-based ukulele. The Flight does well because it has that laminate soundboard. I do think the Enya has selling points over laminates due to its construction; I love the feel (though the concert’s neck could be wider), I love the looks, and there is a peace of mind with the Nova that it will survive a lot of bumps; and is easily replaceable with an identical instrument. There are other negatives; the case is basically useless (cool, but useless), the aforementioned width of the neck (or the lackthereof), and fret wear over time (I wish there was a “pro” concert model). But other than that, it’s the ideal ukulele to haul around to jams, schools, and so on. Yet it still has the sound of a plastic based ukulele. That isn’t a bad thing; it just is.

@@UkeStuff I mean I know it sounds somewhat plastic, but I think the saprano mini I have with a low g on it can almost pass for wood. I agree the concert is more obvious...

Yes, it is the Peripole Classic by Enya, sold exclusively in the US from Peripole.com
