I think the most fascinating part of evangelical Christianity is how classist it is. Someone who is threatened by eviction can't "drop their worries" to receive god's blessings, and the pretending that they can implies that people who have issues just aren't trying enough to fix them. It's the same rhetoric you see behind the idea that you can pray away poverty, sickness, etc. or that you "choose" to be poor by not believing hard enough.

@Judy Mwanzo "Blaming systems for issues takes the power out of god's hands" omg, everything makes sense now! This is why conservative Christians refuse to acknowledge that we might have systemic issues to resolve!

@Judy Mwanzo right! Thankfully I was only raised Catholic, not hardcore Evangelical, but even in the Catholic Church, you're expected to tithe 10% to the church, regardless of your personal situation. IF the Biblical God actually existed, I think he would be more apt to tell the church that they need to be helping their congregation instead of having their congregation giving to them. I think the Biblical God (if he existed, which I don't personally believe, but to each their own) would be more apt to tell his followers to spend what they have to support themselves and their children and loved ones, and if they somehow ended up in a situation where they had more money than they needed, *then* they could start giving to the church.

@@Ruscharound19 the early Christians followed a form of anarchism and would probably not be impressed by the hierarchy found in churches today. 4:00 Funny thing about divorce rates is, the big spikes in the later half of the last century were mostly because of increased ability of women to be financially independent. For reference, it only became illegal to deny a credit based on gender in 1974. Before this, many banks literally required a husband's signature to issue a credit card to a woman. If you go a bit further back before the 60s, many banks would deny you an account based on you being a woman.

It’s not a mega church but my god the content you can milk from this man… he says autistic kids are just possessed and I could go on and on but I don’t have the energy for it lmao. This year on Halloween his church burned “demonic” and “witch” stuff like dungeons and dragons, tarot cards, Harry Potter books, etc which is ironically much more ritualistic and witchy than the objects themselves. I consider myself to fall into the Catholic group of Christianity as of late, but it surprises me every time how most modern Christians I see in America simultaneously believe the Bible is a rule book and also choose to blatantly ignore the most important aspects of it, like being a kind and considerate person. I bring mine to work every day, but I don’t treat it as the end-all, be-all but more of a reminder to keep my heart open to others’ struggles and give of myself. I couldn’t care less about converting people or calling others “sinful” because that’s not my place to pass judgement or impose my ideas onto another. Crazy how profitable and harmful some churches politicising a book written by long dead men can be, though.

Thanks Ethan for another banger! You know, I went to a christian college that required 4 religion credits as part of the basics and unironically those were some of the most enlightening and interesting classes I had (when the ultra religious would shut up) because they added nuance and thoughtful discussion to the text from a (mostly) unbiased POV. My favorite thing was actually how the professor teaching World Religions had a doctorate in like a million things, but specifically in Ancient Hebrew, as in the language the bible was written in, and he debunked half of the religious talking points of modern right-wing churches just via "So, that word in Hebrew did not mean 'witch' or 'black magic', it meant liar" or recontextualizing their abhorrence of sodomy (because that passage theyre talking about was specifically in context to the romans sleeping with young boys they took on as apprentices and not consenting adults). I learned not to trust the interpretations of a 2000 year old collection of books that's been translated by people with agendas (King James) and to define my own moral compass.

Hi Ethan, My degree was in Anthropology and Religious Studies. The cadence of the speech of these pastors seems(though Im not sure, and any one who knows better please correct me) to be derivative of both the historical black preaching style, dominant in black sects such as Baptist and Episcopalian and the modern evangelical movement. The majority of the Protestant Evangelical movement was at one point anti-racist and this changed in the 70s and 80s and the black Evangelical movement broke off, so the two styles of preaching co-mingled. Also a few of the motifs are common in Christian sermons: the object metaphor/lesson- using a daily thing to make a point about the scriptures or doctrine The Answer and call back- the priest/preacher/pastor says something and the crowd answers back. Black Christian movements have a particularly unique way of doing this (and I don't know if there is a term for it.) Call out- the leader of the sermon calls out to a certain group or person, and praises them, includes them in the dialogue of the sermon or tears them down. I hope thid helps.

This is exactly why Jesus warned us of the wolf in sheeps clothing. And why he was murdered for preaching that a relationship with God doesn’t come through another man or church, but an intimate and personal relationship between only God and yourself.
@Window4503
@Window4503 Жыл бұрын
Actually, the relationship comes through Jesus. He preached that multiple times. He was murdered for claiming to be God. As for the church, it’s the body of Christ. It’s like the testing ground for practicing love, speaking the truth, and encouraging each other in your spiritual walk. The church serves as accountability, but only under the authority of the Bible, which every Christian should know enough of individually to stamp out any abuse.

Apostle Paul referred to these mega churchgoers as having itching ears and that the pastors entertaining them will make merchandise out of them. They only wanna hear something about God that makes them feel good and not the truth. These pastors are either ignorant or know what they are doing when twisting the scripture. One unfortunate example is Jamal Bryant who was known as a adulterer and never stopped. He gave a twisted narcissistic seminar about himself and compared himself to king David when he got caught in his 1st set of major sins after he cheated using the verse 2 Samuel 12:7-“You are the man!” Nathan told David. “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I anointed you king over Israel and rescued you from Saul.” Well Jamal proceeded to say I am the man💪 and nothing is gonna stop him. In the context Nathan was giving a parable about a rich man and poor man and how the rich man stolen the poor man’s animal to prepare as a meal so he wouldn’t have to give up his own. David got angry about the rich man and Nathan called him out saying he was the rich man. It’s on KZbin if you wanna see it. Jamal also was bragging about his accomplishments too and even said was gonna put a curse on the people who spoke out against him and the audience cheered.🫤

@@undrwatropium3724the historians consensus on that matter is that he did live in Palestine in the 1st century and he was crucified. And tbh it is quite more likely that he did than not, just like Abraham did before him and Mohammed did after (though for that one there’s not even a question that he did, he was literally involved in political life). For a religion to appear out of a thin air is way less likely than for there to be actual people and historic events involved. As for his miracles, that’s obviously unprovable. But as a person, yes, there was a dude named Jesus that was probably a very eloquent public speaker with a political ambition at least.

It’s so man made that they have so many names like methodist, Baptist,non denominational🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ so many different rules and beliefs and yet they say they follow the same God. Like literally everything is spiritual and churches no longer teach about spirituality and the spiritual realm cuz they want people to stay stuck in the matrix,which is being controlled by people,specially those with higher positions. It’s all a business now. Don’t know if you believe in the Bible but Jesus wasn’t a strict asshole like some people act or say due to their silly rules. Dude got hated by his own people and people thought he was a warlock cuz he would cast demons out of people, all spiritual. Just stick with your beliefs,whatever they are. The thing that always gets me about these churches is that they always seem so great at a glance - they're headed by charismatic, well spoken, (usually) young people with a really open, encouraging and friendly energy. But when you look into what they're actually saying, it sounds hopeful but is really uncomfortable. You mentioned the way one of the pastors talks about Satan as if he is a tangible being, the opposite of god - that's one sign/belief I've always thought of as a red flag for sects of christianity. I grew up (and still am) protestant, in a church where bible stories were used as symbolic guides, not literal histories, and where the devil was rarely mentioned in relation to our real lives (more as a force of temptation, or a representation of desires which might hurt others), and that environment was truly nurturing, and encouraged me and the other children to think freely and question our elders if we were curious. But I know people who grew up having a literal being of Satan held over them like a threat to control their thoughts and behaviour, and that almost always came along with a whole host of other abusive, manipulative tactics to keep the congregation almost fearful of their religion. It especially works on children, who tend not to be able to figure out when something is symbolic, or think critically about other people's motivations. TLDR; religion should cause joy, not shame, and these mega "churches" seem like the perfect environment to create toxic positivity while forcing people to supress themselves.

It was the same in my Catholic school. The masses on Wednesday mornings _never_ mentioned Satan or the Devil. We even had a priest (super funny, short old dude who walked around with an actual shepherd’s crook twice as tall as him) that frequently cracked jokes about the scripture. One of the nuns made sure to emphasize that most of the Bible is a reflection of time it was written - like Romans just being a long rant about the issues Paul had with Rome’s government. Of course, I still have significant trauma from Catholic school, but none of it arose from fear-mongering.

11:00 As an experienced wood splitter, the analogy is flawed from the get go. Your axe shouldn't be sharp enough to cut you or the blade will get all messed up when you hit. You want it just sharp enough to create a wedge, but still sturdy enough to take the impact. This is because the axe cuts by forcing itself between the wood fibers with kinetic impact, not by severing soft materials like a knife would. And his axe skill sucks, you hit from the top, not the side; that's prolly why his axe is broken.

cw: transphobia I just moved to a metropolitan city & was looking for a new church home. We tried out a smaller megachurch (a midichurch?) in the area. Like halfway through his sermon, the pastor starts going off about the church being doomed because no one knows what a man or woman is anymore & how Christians need to “stand for the truth” & call “a woman a woman & a man a man.” I was so weirded out that we left early & never went back. The transphobia came way outta left field too, like out of nowhere. NOTHING he was preaching about was relevant to gender in any way. All of this to say, it’s hard being a leftist Christian these days lol.

@@naeshelle I swear, when I actually read the Bible, it blows my mind how much sense it all makes with full context, especially if you take the time to research the historical context and what everything means. Even if you’re not like me and you don’t believe in God, it’s just filled with stories that have so many good life lessons that so many people are missing out on because they’re focusing on individual verses, as if a single sentence out of a whole book is supposed to mean anything. I’m so used to hearing big pastors either rant about bigoted nonsense or just give a motivational speech that goes on and on and doesn’t really say anything.

I went to one “sermon” of Elevation church with my nieces (before turning full heathen) and the whole speech was him bragging about how far he’d come in life. That friends told him he wouldn’t make it as a pastor but “look at me now”. It was so transparent and so vain yet every brag he made about numbers, buildings, followers, etc was met with resounding “AMEN!”s. He wasn’t even there in person- it was a live TV sermon but at one of their buildings. I don’t understand what people see in that guy besides the obvious acting and self serving messages.

So, as a kid, I was in a lot of church programs designed to help me become a youth pastor because I had believed god called me to do that. And we were literally taught that it doesn’t matter what you say, it’s how you say it that gets people wooing and reacting. The reason they talk in such a specific way is just emotional manipulation. They talk so dramatically to try and goad a reaction out of you by making you think they have some authority to be speaking. It’s super weird and gross psychology stuff but they just don’t realize it

The insanely high levels of theater-kid energy just RADIATING off of that pastor when he talks about checking for followers. Also, I know it’s for his slam-dunk follower wordplay, but I’m pretty sure only influencers are driven by follower count? I think the average person on insta is caring more about likes, but hey, what do I know, I’m not waking up and HUMBLING MYSELF instead of YELLING AT GOD THAT I DON’T WANNA PRAY AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME, YOU’RE NOT EVEN MY REAL DAD.

“the word dating is not in the bible.” yeah dawg the bible also doesn’t have “football” in it and yet every pastor i’ve met is obsessed with forcing their team in as the “church’s” team, and dedicating a huge event to the super bowl that’s always more extravagant than the celebration they’d do for their savior literally rising from the dead and saying “what’s good”

That kind of "just hold on" compliant mindset and believing I had to "resist the process" kinda mindset kept me in an abusive house until my late 20's, and every time Ive heard "Gods voice" telling me to "stay" (at the expense of my mental health) and later found out "his voice" sounded exactly like trauma bond... Ive lost so many oportunities and I quitted stuff I really loved because I wasnt putting "God first" and they could became "idols in my heart". Im glad i'm finally regainin my freedom back, but sad for all the stuff Ive missed to do in my life.
