Dave's grunting is actually the result of a rift in time when, in the year 1986, a young Dave Mustaine, fresh off the success of Peace Sells, was drinking at a bar when a wormhole appeared. Through said wormhole came the sound of "Crush 'Em." All the younger Mustaine could do was grunt in disgust at the sounds he heard, and when he found out the responsible party was in fact HIS OWN BAND IN 13 YEARS, he growled in anger. And with that, the wormhole closed. Either that or he ate some Taco Bell too fast and got the shits.

Seriously, like that album has that very 90's flair to it, with some slower tracks like "I'll Get Even" and some big ballads like "Trust" and "Use the Man". But it also knew when to let loose and just be ball-crushingly heavy, like on "She Wolf". And the material is top to bottom much more engaging.

IMO, and I am speculating, two things happened that resulted in this album. A) the 90s. It was a hard decade for metal. With the rise of grunge, glam metal literally died overnight and became instantly uncool which didn't help the over all metal genre. And then as hip-hop and alternative music became mainstream, it was even harder for the genre which seemed old. Only the best of the rock and metal bands survived this decade, and even for them it was a decade of uncertainty. I can see why they wanted to try new things. B) Dave let Marty Friedman indulge his artistic ramblings with this album. Now we all know Marty is a bad ass guitar player, but he has even said "Megadeth is gun metal gray, and there's more colors out there." But like many virtuouso class musicians, they don't always excel in the composing of songs that people want to hear.

However..... 4: .....it shoots itself in the foot. I can't believe they used this to promote Universal Soldier: The Return. Not to say that the movie was any good to begin with. 5: This song was terrible. It's monotonous and bland. 6: I have no words for this... 7: It's boring and forgettable. 8: Ditto for this track. 9: I think I'm gonna need some ecstasy for listening to this. 10: Great. A reminder of St. Anger. 11: Yeah, I almost fell asleep on this track, too. 12: Alright, this could've worked. But, it was wasted potential. Megadeth's Risk was anything _but_ a risk. It was too boring to be enjoyable, even in an ironic sense. While I personally like Megadeth (Dystopia was a great example), but Risk was something I willingly wouldn't go back to.

You can judge me all you want, but I love this album. I love every single Megadeth record for a simple reason. They're all different and unique. I always hear people complaining about the guitar work on this album but honestly it's pretty good, especially when played on an acoustic guitar. The melodies are interesting, the vocals are pretty good, the bass gives a lot of depth and the whole album has this atmospgere that just appeals to me. I really do see why people dislike this album, but personally I really enjoy it. Diversity, in my opinion, is what makes Megadeth so good. Their tracks never sound the same. They all have interesting ideas in them. Some bands really lack this, and that's why I can never listen to them for a long time. Some famous examples include AC/DC and Cannibal Corpse. (Also, Dream Theater, not quite on the level of the previous bands, but still really repetetive.)

Its funny. As much shit as Metallica gets for "selling out" and being radio rock nothing they have done comes close to the pop record that Risk is. Actually, when I go back and listen to Load it isn't something I would expect from a band that was forcibly trying to sell out in the 90s. You would think you'd hear more nu-metal, pop-punk, post grunge, etc. Instead there's lots of mid-tempo, blues flavored tracks. And quite a few are long. Hell, even its first single, "Until it Sleeps", is not an obvious "hit".

I can appreciate what they were trying to do with Crush 'Em, it makes sense to want a sports anthem, and it is better to see it that way than to see it as a Megadeth song. The real problem with Crush 'Em is how the producer made the 'crowd' vocal sound, it kills the purpose of the song with the effects because it doesn't sound like an actual crowd. 'We Will Rock You' has a multitude of human voices chanting the chorus that sounds like a multitude of human voices, as does 'Rock You' by Helix and other songs created specifically to be stadium chants. The chanting makes the actual crowds at the stadium feel like they should chant. The Crush 'Em crowd vocal sounds like a digital effect trying to sound like a crowd, by not sounding like an actual crowd it's not going to have the same effect on an actual crowd.
@StubzTurner8 жыл бұрын
The reason Goldberg looked like that in the video for Crush 'Em (and why Jean-Claude Van Damme is also it it) was because the song was part of the soundtrack to Universal Soldier: The Return. The movie isn't all that good by the way.

At least they didn't release a follow up album titled "Rerisk"

They should have called the follow-up album "Reward".

Would love to see a regretting the past on Super Collider. That album makes Risk look like a masterpiece.

you have got to be a fan from the beginning and a musician to dig his groove man.everything he's done is genius and he did risk for himself.every one of his albums shares with his fans his journey through life, changes in his tastes, experimenting with his craft etc. I personally love all of his music.

No fucking way man, you couldn't pay me to listen to St. Anger. Risk may be shitty to people who are looking for true metal, but the songs are at least varied and have different sounds to them. The entirety of St. Anger is one big shit show where it all sound the same, and it all sounds shitty.

St Anger without shitty snare is a decent album

@@jasonallen5318 Have you heard St Anger 2015? It's decent but if it came out like that, I'd still call it Metallica's weakest album in terms of lyrics and composition; no solos and repetitive but catchy riffs.

Crush em was also used in the intro video for the first ultimate fighting championship game on ps1 and sega dreamcast

It's that sound you here when that epic taco bell pig out becomes self aware in your gastrointestinal tract, right before it fights its way to freedom.

When Dave is groaning he is either trying out to be an extra for the Walking Dead, purring like a cat, or trying to replicate the noises you make when you wake up.

The groaning was the sound of Dave’s soul trying to escape his body before it died of boredom

Mustaine wanted a number 1 album, and thought this was the way to do it at the time. He tried again with Super Collider, and you know how that went. He's still chasing it, as far as I can tell

It would be a total under statement to say that they sold out, but that’s exactly what they did on Risk. Also, you made that joke about Lulu, but I do think that that would make a really good Regretting the Past Episode. I hope you decide to do one on that album at some point.

I once downloaded this record and added it to my playlist, but had to wait to listen. Later, I played it on random and when this album came on, I was audibly offended! I was annoyed that such crap had landed on my playlist. I rushed over to the player to see who it was. It was Risk. I immediately deleted it!

I actually like this album, it's incompareble to "rust" so if that's what you expect you will be dissapointed. However just on it's own, its a really fun album.

I think the album was okay.. I mean few songs from the album are pretty decent ... When i first heard the album i was full on thrash and when i first listen to risk i was like well sometimes it feel nice not to listen to heavy fast screaming songs .. Risk is my guilty pleasure ...

Dave made it no secret that he wanted a #1 album, and awards. Brought in a pop song writer. Of course, now, he tries to blame Marty.

I honestly love Risk. The only songs I don’t like are The Doctor Is Calling and I’ll Be There. Insomnia punches you in the face and I think it’s awesome, Prince Of Darkness is kinda weird and weak, But I still like like it. Crush ‘Em is a great song for what it is and I actually kinda love it. Breadline is fun and poppy albeit with dumbass lyrics. Wanderlust is a great song. Ecstasy may be my favorite because it’s a brilliant chord progression imo and I love the lyrics. Seven is just a great fun track. Then the Time songs are just mesmerizing and Time: The End is kinda heavy and I love it
