For fifty years Furtwaengler has been my favorite Wagnerian (and Beethoven) conductor. I see no need to change my opinion after this.

To all who are struck by the sheer splendour of the sound, be appraised that the Rome RAI Orchestra in 1951 was regarded as a less than second-rate outfit. Furtwaengler got the splendour of heaven opening to welcome God Himself out of a group of people who had not been good enough for better orchestras. This is a miracle.

Furtwaengler's interpretations of Wagner have a unique and unsurpassed pathos! Listening to them I always have the feeling that this is the real Wagner.

He was great, no argument there, but Wagner's descendants and the Bayreuth folks believed that nothing ever matched Arturo Toscanini's performances----transcendent. Unfortunately he left no full performances behind on recordings.

Furtwaengler lives! Wagner is god. Singing so wonderful all around. Imagine if it had been recorded in today's technology, or even just 30 years ago, the sheer beauty of this exerpt! Regarding the carpers about the orchestra and minor instrumental glitches--to paraphrase Oscar Wilde: 'A cynic is one who knows the price of everything--and the value of nothing.'

@@thursoberwick1948 As I already said twice in this page, the RAI Symphony Orchestra of Rome in 1951 was a less than second-rate outfit. Furtwaengler took a bunch of musical also-rans and made them roar and thunder, and draw in fire the tremendous picture of God entering the royal halls of Heaven. Nobody else I heard - and I heard a dozen of the best from Solti to Boehm - working with the best orchestras in the world, managed anything like this.
