uhoh. wait until they see i rotated sprites and broke the NES color limit occasionally. Just wanna say. this is a PC game. The asthetics being retro is definitely the style we are going for. but we are not and have never locked ourselves in a box. If there is something we like we will do it, and i told my team to not get hung up on the limitations because again, it's a PC game.

@@jumpdashevade6920 I totally understand that. Whenever I make retro styled games I always "break the rules" a little bit. In my opinion though, I think having mismatching pixel sizes tends to look a bit off. If that's your vision though it's fine.

There are no mismatching pixel sizes. Even the particles are solitary pixels of the same resolution of the game . I took care to ensure that. I also did some stuff that the average player would never notice, like the sand blocks have exactly 256 particles which is is its size of 16x16.

Glad to see more and more people are trying out Godot engine for fan games, and actually achieving some good results with it, too! Not to shit on Game Maker Classic or anything, but when I worked on a Mega Man level in it, it felt like I had to fight the engine at just about every step I took. Now I don't know if Godot actually works out any better here as I haven't used it myself yet, but at least it's open source and actively being maintained, so it's only bound to improve, whereas Game Maker Classic will forever be stuck in its current state. Kinda digressing here, but I guess I just want to point out that this looks very competently made!

From my experience, Godot is really quick and powerful. i like using it a lot. it definitely has some stuff that get me stumped. but it's been going great

​@@jumpdashevade6920 I guess that's not too surprising. At the end of the day, pretty much every engine has some annoying aspects (be it Godot, Unity, Unreal Engine, or even in-house developed ones). So I think what truely defines a great engine is how good it does in every-day use cases. Definitely want to give Godot a try some day and see for myself!

i'm a professional dev in real life. but this is my first game. I learned godot specifically for this. if you know how to code already in javascript or python , you can pick up godot pretty quickly. And, yea. this game is definitely going to come out. I wont let my teams time go to waste. expected for 2025 :)

very slick looking... i love how creative these assets look! though is there any reason that the project cant use godot's viewport stretch mode to keep everything aligned to the base 256x240 resolution? (very noticeable at 0:52)

i'm using 256x224. each screen is the same. that particular screen is just framed that way. but everything is aligned. However. that being said. Truthfully i did not know about viewports when i started godot dev. by the time i learned about how useful they were all my text and menus broke text so i had to not use it i learned godot for this project so it has been an experience for sure :)

Lovely concept i hope the particle effects 0:39 0:46 and 0:52 are placeholders as they feel out of place with the 8-bit aesthetic. Same for the background in challenge mode 1:00 and the screen warp at 1:16. These all break the classic Mega Man experience, and 8bit styled effects will only make this lovely project keep a more cohesive aesthetic and feel more like a classic MM game.

we are a PC game. we are not limited by NES restrictions. Just because we are using retro sprites and assets doesn't mean we cant break those those when we want to :)

@@jumpdashevade6920 I get that, it's cool to do things the NES couldn't, like the parallax. but the other effects I mentioned are rendered at a different resolution than the game and look jarring against the old school sprite gfx. especially since in some areas you used "sprite/tile" like effects like the waving water 0:42 and the wobbling sun 0:49. Again you took care not to do this in other areas like 0:55 the green narwhal/swordfish enemy. Some devs would've rotated the sprite 45 degrees but you took care to draw a separate sprite and it shows because the square pixels didn't become diamonds when it jumped out of the water. Consistency like this will only help your project in my opinion. That being said Its your project, but as a complete work it'll look more cohesive and polished if you considered sprite/tile effects instead of the particle effects. Or particle effects that look like sprite effects. for example, the challenge mode background could be rendered at a lower (matching) resolution with 4-5 colors. (edited for better explanation)

imo it makes no difference to other retro games that add lighting effects like Mighty Gunvolt Burst. It is the style of the game and it gives the game it's own personal charm. it doesnt need to fit nicely in the same box that is always used.
