There's mythological reasoning, such as Mars being all gun-pumpkin because of mythological Mars being a war god, Neptune being a fish because of mythological Neptune being a water god, and Jupiter possessing zapping capabilities because of mythological Jupiter being a thunder god. The same reasoning works with the Electric Shock being ideal against Saturn, because mythologically, Jupiter overthrew Saturn as the big boss deity. Then there's stuff about what constellations they overlap. Venus is all crab-looking because his namesake planet overlaps with Cancer, which is a crab, and Uranus is a big beefy minotaur-bot because his namesake planet overlaps with Taurus, which is a bull. And finally, there's just plain arbitrary. Mercury, I can kind of understand, because there's a periodic element named after his namesake planet that's all blobby and stuff, but why does Terra have such long fluffy hair, and why does Pluto look like a cat and even try to roar at you like one of those big jungle cats?
