Yes, it’s true. Megamunch is retiring.
It has been 37 years since Megamunch arrived at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum on May 16, 1986. Almost immediately, he started the Megamunch Club, which was hugely popular with kids for almost two decades. In February 1990 he witnessed a fire that spread soot throughout the Museum.
But that didn’t deter him from being active.
In 1997, he went and worked at the YQR Airport as a greeter and baggage handler, as construction of the Life Sciences Gallery started. Then, in 2001, he suffered a bout of illness that rendered him immobile and speechless, and threatened to derail his August birthday party. In 2003, he underwent surgery to reconstruct sections of his skin. Megamunch’s spirits have always remained bright despite ongoing health issues.
Around 2010, he entered the world of fashion, a passion that remains to this day.
The Royal Saskatchewan Museum is planning activities over the coming months so you can send Megamunch cheer, including a retirement party in mid-February. Megamunch’s last day at work is February 25, so do visit soon to wish him all the best.
We’ll be sharing more of our memories of Megamunch in the next couple of months. Share your memories and retirement advice with Megamunch at royalsaskmuseu... and to learn more about Megamunch’s retirement. #MegamunchMemories
