Back in the late 70's, I worked at ABC Music in Burbank, CA. They had a BB300 that I fell in love with. Over the years, this has been my "go to" bass. The overall quality of the bass held up fantastically! I still play it every day, looking at my others hanging on the wall. No way will I ever part with it... It's going to my son when I die.

Ive been using the Yamaha basses for years and i love the 5 string necks, wider than the usual basses with plenty of room to get going. No dead spots and very solid. great sounding too.The string spacing are perfect for me.

I purchased the 734A about 3 months ago and haven’t set it down since. It’s the best bass I have ever had. And by that I mean it cuts through the mix better than any bass I’ve had and I’ve had a lot! For the these basses are a STEAL. I have basses that I spent triple the money on compared to this one and they don’t touch it. Hands down my favorite. Great review by the way. One of the best I’ve seen on KZbin. Nice !

The GREATEST improvement of this series of Yamaha BB basses is the fact that you can now install aftermarket pickups. The major achilles heel of all BB basses was that Yamaha designed their pickups with their stock design-only components that never allowed you to swap out the pickups with aftermarket upgrades without making some drastic alteration to the pickup cavity on the body...The pre-amp still needs work, but it's tolerable.

The 400 Series should compete well with the Squier and MiM Fender lines. String-thru, two-option bridge saddles, and a five-piece neck are purdy sweet!
@marike1100
@marike1100 6 жыл бұрын
The 400 series compete well with MIM Fender lines, it kind of blows away any Squier I've ever played including the Vintage Modified series. Better tuners, better hardware, no cheap agathis or basswood body like on many Squiers.

Don't know Stefan. I have a BB234 since yesterday and my beloved 2017 MIM Fender P-Bass. I'd say the Fender still wins, overall better fretwork, build quality and crucially, the pickups on the P-Bass sound better. But it was over $624, and the BB234 was $299. At that price, it's significantly better than the BB234, it's a great value and a heck of a good player.

tbh, tonally, these aren't all that much different to the BB 400, 1000 and 2000 series basses. I have a BB425X and besides being a little lighter on the lows and a little more top end happy, these basses have a very similar sound siganature. Just as distinctive as it's always been.
@marike1100
@marike1100 6 жыл бұрын
And one nice thing they've done is used standard size pickups, so any PJ sets by Fender, Aguilar, Duncan, EMG, et al will fit these BB basses. I do with they made these Yamaha pups noise cancelling, but they do sound very good.

No real shocker imo since Yamaha stopped using their usual rails in these basses. the part I was driving at is that they still have that really distinctive bite that the older BB basses have.
@savanaviolenta
@savanaviolenta 6 жыл бұрын
ThEcRaZ3dGaM3R yes,hence the name BB the new series will inherit this BB tone and it will always be like that for the future BB series,imo the previous generation BB with the rail jazz pups sounded more vintage and boutique.The newer BB series especially the 700 series have more modern (still BB) tone,its scooped a bit in the lows and highs,but definetely will cut and sit perfectly in a band or recording mix,without much eq-ing.

Judging by how well Roy plays, I'm guessing he'd choose the top of the line BBP34. I just wondered if there was a noticeable feel / quality / sonic difference between the 400 and 700 series aside from the active vs passive differences. Great demo, thanks.

Thanks. I prefer the bridge and overall high end look of the 734, but I prefer passive basses and I'm not sure about the dark stained neck. That and nobody has the 734 in stock yet, and GAS doesn't wait. The 434 seems a good compromise between price and features. Thanks a lot.

These BB’s are exceptional basses, very impressive. Roy is obviously a very adept player but I found his over percussive style and that incessant use of the harmonic at the end of a lick to be so irritating that it spoiled the review. No pick playing either...but he did oblige us with some silly and pointless slap instead. I would guess 80% of players will use a pick at some point so we need to see this!!
