i think it's largely because of the classic over the topness of popular, but people interpret that as her base characterization rather than the giddy high of a post-party teenage girl indulging in a new friendship

I do think there's still a, particularly timely, validity to the critique that even if Glinda had internal strife and a complicated character her actions are still in service to an authoritarian (in many ways fascist) culture

@@danielmcelroy4505Oh definitely, but I think one of the interesting parts of Wicked is how it shows through Glinda how otherwise seemingly "good" people will collaborate with authoritarian regimes for seemingly "good" reasons - such as the belief that they can act as a moderating influence, or that they can use their position to harness the power of such a regime to do good things, or that doing otherwise could result in more conflict and strife than simply complying. That doesn't necessarily excuse their complicity, but it explains why otherwise liberal people who in theory oppose a fascist regime will often still fall in line: in the hopes that it will avoid a worse outcome.

I love this, it’s like the director was , hey do this song your own way, it’s not Popular, you don’t have to be Kristin. Whereas during Popular you could tell she was expected to do it just like Kristin, but here she put her own spin on it.
