I bought the Kaffelogic Nano 7, and would do it again. Electric, small footprint, high quality, super flexible, repeatable, vents into a kitchen hood, reasonably priced, perfect for the home/hobby roaster or as a pro sample roaster. The only limitation is batch size. I think the spec with the BOOST is 60-200g, but I do 80g for developing a profile, and 160g for “production.” With a new bean, I can reliably adjust the drop by +/- 1C or +/- 20 sec, as recommended by Mill City’s recent blog. It’s pretty hands off, so there’s no real-time stress. It does what I ask it to do. So I don’t really waste any coffee by missing a target. In “production” I just load it, select the profile, and hit Play. I can roast about 640g per hour, doing up to four different roasts/beans. I just have to load/unload every 15 minutes, and can do other tasks as it roasts, so it’s not all consuming. Perfect for personal use and gifting. And if I were to move from hobbyist to pro, I’d still use it as a sample roaster. I’m not associated with Kaffelogic. This is just one user’s experience.

I started on a hot top too inspired by Meg 3 years ago. I quickly grew out of it and upgraded to the Aillio within a year. I think, it is definitely a great option as the power on it is amazing and makes some really grear roasted. In terms of venting, to give you an idea , I live in a 1 bedroom co-op apartment in New York and I've vented it out my window with a 3D printed attachment from Etsy, some lightweight aluminum tubing I break down after every session. To pull it all out I've got a window fan with a ventilation setting. No smoke in the apartment and you wouldn't even know I roast here other than ... Lol the tons of beans I have laying around. Hahaha. I think the electric route for me personally makes sense because I can't alter my space as much of a house. Learned from Coffee Project NY when I went for an SCA cert, that actually New York will ban gas stoves in the next 10 years so... Haha definitely makes sense in the long term. If you need any suggestions on Aillio setup willing to offer some suggestions based off what I've done here. But it's a great little machine. Good luck! Hope you make the best decision for you.

Very interesting! May I ask how you grew away from it that fast, I guess you’re selling coffee? Would be great to know more about your development and path. I just got my IKAWA home and find it all fun but confusing!

I began with a Fresh Roast and moved to the Kaleido M2 (400g/.4k) to up my hobby home roasting and to learn more about roasting with a drum and convection roaster. Both roasters are electric and on the affordable side compared to an Aillio/Mill City and can run on a 20 Amp in a kitchen or garage. As much as I would have liked a M6 or M10 (700g-1kg), my time and consumption to have those larger Kaleido models don’t match the size of the machine. I’m still learning roasts, software, reading data so having more time practicing several roasts on a roast day (typically being a Friday every week) provides me with that experience based on the time I have and the space I have as well. -Linda (Lunera Coffee Roaster)

I don't know what it is about you but you are really easy to listen to :) I've been thinking about hobby roasting for years, the urge comes and goes but I know when I do finally pull the trigger I know myself well enough to not go too cheap and fall victim to upgrade-its.. I appreciate your list of what's important as it confirms what I have it narrowed down to. I have a unique parameter in that electric is a firm no as this will spend time on my sailboat (and at home) where juice will be at a premium and gas is relatively cost effective and abundant. I'm going with a Kaldi Fortis for several reasons: - Drum roaster will full control of variables (except drum speed) for hands on hobby fun - Gas; the burner can be used to cook and roast - Simple; the drum and cooling fans are straight forward and the probs are run off a replaceable hand held unit that Artisan can connect to - 600g max so 400~500g typical batches - I'm w/ you on aesthetics, I want it to look like a roaster

some of the air roasters like the fresh roast work well but it takes a lot of mods to be able to use a profile based roast. and the chaff collection is a pain.
