Ric, in all fairness, I think the dancehall fraternity needs to set the standard with the boxes to check for what can make one the king. Beenie Man is a more successful international dancehall artist than Vybz Kartel. Beenie Man is a more complete artist and is a better live band and tracks performer than Vybz Kartel. Beenie Man can still perform his hits better than Vybz Kartel can perform his hits. Beenie Man has more international hits and local hits than Vybz Kartel. Beenie Man was named DJ of the year in Jamaica more times than Vybz Kartel. Beenie Man won more awards than Vybz Kartel internationally. Vybz Kartel is more popular now, but not necessarily solely because of his music. We should match up the career of both artists in the categories that matter. As a matter of fact, Bounty Killer checks more boxes than Vybz Kartel to be king. When Vybz Kartel master the art of performing live and win some Grammy's, etc. then, he would have the right to claim that he is the king. Impact is subjective, especially internationally. The most universal subject in school is mathematics, and that is because it uses numbers. We all know that real numbers do not lie. Which of the two put more songs on the billboards hot 100 and sold more units. Vybz Kartel is a great hit maker, but he does not have as many hits as Beenie Man who have been there from the 1970s. Remember, Yellow Man defeated a young Beenie Man on Tastes Challenge way back in the 1970s. Look it up! The totality of each career must be measured, and one must surpass the other to be deemed above the other. Until another sprinter breaks Usain Bolt's 100m and 200m world record records and win more Olympics gold medals, that person can not be deemed as surpassing him. Vybz Kartel is impactful, but we should look at how he is impactful (for how much good and for how much bad), and vice versa for Beenie Man. Beenie Man did surpass Yellow Man, but Vybz Kartel has not surpassed Beenie Man in his career. How can the man with the most dancehall #1 and the most DJ of the year awards, etc., not be the king of it? Beenie Man is current, and it showed in his recent Versus viewership with Bounty Killer and the reception by dancehall fans in his even more recent tour overseas. Remember that in Jamaica, there are gatekeepers who prevent certain artists from being on certain shows or boycott shows if certain artists are on it. Some also refuse to give dubplate and specials to sound men and radio personalities, etc. That is why it might seem as if some artists are not popular and relevant in Jamaica. Overseas, it is harder to use this stronghold. All in all, they are both phenomenal artists.
