Early 2000s games were great. You bought your game, had fun, the end. Now, you buy the game, wait till it's patched enough to work, pay some more for what should just be part of the game and realise it's not as fun as games from 20 years ago. So, virtually everything is generic and the only place to find originality is Indie. Those games get cloned to death and your heart withers.

More accurately, what happened to Triple A western games? They became more focused on predatory monetization practices. This doesn't apply to indie games, which are still constantly coming out and being fantastic. Even Japanese games have been great (FromSoftware, Capcom, Nintendo despite their inability to run a business has been putting out great stuff.) And even if that wasn't true, you could still play old games you missed out on, speaking personally I just played through Bioshock for the first time. If you only focus on the biggest, triple A releases, you're gonna have a bad time, you gotta look for the smaller stuff comin' out, and most importantly: DON'T BUY BIG BUDGET TRIPLE A GAMES AT LAUNCH.

I'm 33 and I'm so glad I haven't missed any gaming since 1995-2019. Anything after 2020 have been trash and gaming is now a shadow of what it used be. Almost every franchise that I've loved have gone to trash and I can't even remember the last time I was excited for any of their new games. Possibly 2018. Many mmo games that have peaked in fun and popularity between 2010-2017 or so are now almost unrecognizable, low effort cash grabs. What's worse is the playerbases have completely been shuffled and replaced and you no longer have the same kinship or connection with people since the people you've played with have been gone for 7-8 years.

I've been playing games since the NES and I would say the Dreamcast/PS2/Gamecube/Xbox gen was probably the peak. 360/Wii/PS3 still had a lot of great stuff but in my opinion once the PS4 generation started in 2014 was when I noticed the big drop in quality. I played about 200-300 games in the PS3 generation but only played about 30 or 40 in the PS4 generation due to there being less interesting games imo. I should say I don't play online games as I find them tedious and boring. I only play single player games. I got zero entertainment from games like Call of Duty or Fortnite when I tried them. Not my cup of tea. More of a young person thing I suspect.

Because games are no longer art. They are a vehicle for micro transactions, recurring revenue streams and gay/feminist propaganda, put in there to pander to people who mostly just play Animal Crossing anyway. The revenue and agenda comes first and the shitty storyline is shaped around those two primary concerns. All the micro transactions are spammed front and center in the UI with layers upon layers of menus, pay to win garbage and unlockables that makes a huge chore out of even getting into a match. It's exhausting. I just want a game that's immersive, has a compelling and believable story, a simple menu and doesn't spam me with unlockable/buyable garbage. The indie scene is really where its at now. Most AAA franchises in nearly every genre have lost their way.

There's a simpler answer that doesn't take 18 minutes to get through: It's not that the pronoun options make the game bad, it's that the game is being made by the kind of people who would include pronoun options in a game: mentally weak, creatively bankrupt weirdos with no meaningful life experience to draw any inspiration from. As a result, the games are highly derivative at best and downright atrocious at worst. There are good games being made right now, but 100% of them are being made in Japan, which generally doesn't think about this stuff. Coincidence? Not even a little.

For some reason i find the majority of modern AAA single player games dull and uninteresting. I dont play multiplayer games so all my problems with the modern gaming scene comes from single player. I cant express this feeling because the majority of gamers are currently satisfied with a lot of the single player games they receive.
@PatrickWard49 ай бұрын
I agree, so many good points in this video, so ill just basically reiterate. The quality of games has never been better in terms of graphics, mechanics, story telling. But somehow the quality of games is the worst because they are not made for fun and pure solid content anymore. Microtransactions and the need to have games that capture you for 40+ hours are the worst offenders. Somehow peak gaming was when the game was just made to be the best it could be. Thats why i think OOT is still a better zelda game than totk. Totk is legitimately "more" on almost every metric, but playing hour for hour in OOT is packed with meaningful content. Totk is kind of a monotonous mill of meaningless content, where you could spend ten hours running around (and i have) and not really have anything to show for it. But i spent $70 so now i have to be invested in a game that could honestly be a lot better. Likewise, super metroid is one of the best games and it is only about 1-2 hours long to play through. Ive beat that so many times because each section of the game is just legitimately good and fun to play. If it were a 10 to 20 hour game, i dont think it would be as fun. Games today are pressured to justify being expensive, so they fill them with less meaningful content. I honestly think if some games would just cut 30-50% of the meaningless stuff out of their game, they could be masterpieces and having a smaller cost. No game studio in their right mind would produce a game for less money though. So almost all games now have to be either $60-70, or free to play + microtransactions.

It was a truly stupid time to be alive and be a gamer as companies stumbled into motion control and making everything a FPS. I am 37 now and have real responsibilities. Some of these new games do look good, but I would rather play stuff like Madagascar for PS2 then yell into a headset at other people. Also, Heathcliffe Racing had good music, imo, but I could only get so far. **Also, the cancel culture stuff killed cool things in games. U know how this monetization thing began way back then? You're probably way too young to remember this, but it happened by people saying stuff like "it's not a big deal". Because they started with seemingly very minor things like horse armor. Doesn't this remind you of something? Of a set of pronouns in a crappy Bethesda game where it became the cool thing to say "it's not a big deal"? Give them an inch they take a mile, give them your hand they take your arm. I miss how 90s-00s gaming had such a vast range of creativity. I love the amount of risk they took on odd concepts in This Y2K era- the Dreamcast/PS2/360. It should show us that GRAPHICS are not the most important thing.. If you can create satisfying movement, gameplay mechanics, physics effects, responsive parts of a environment that makes you want to explore it, engage it, etc. That stuff is so much more important. Not: {"Who can make the largest game map? Or have the most reflections?"} I think Art style, design, vibe, aesthetic is much more important. You don't need top notch graphics to greatly appreciate and enjoy playing a game. That's why we are seeing such a resurgence of players who have gone back to playing older games because they realized the aspects of gaming that they care about and are unhappy with most modern games. So hopefully gaming will enter a new era. That mixes in aspects of the older era's. With our modern capabilities that will hopefully help make it easier to create a satisfying game (without it taking 8 years to build a broken game. Hopefully) Currently everything is trying to be like a Triple AAA game or a free to play online battle Royale game.. A lot of us miss when we had game selection similar to how the Dreamcast/GameCube/360/PS2 era had a mix of. As well alot of those games came with options for local multiplayer, split screen, LAN parties, or offline modes against bots or other diverse offline CPU game modes. Yet modern games are not only lacking those dynamic options that give games nearly endless replayability features... Modern games are lacking even meeting the most basic standards for game's... They don't seemed focused on the core of the games to be Fun. They over focus on "realism" Rather than adding in Artistic adaptations for the greater good of gaming as a whole.. We could be doing so much better yet people are just coming out with the most bland game design, braindead AI, less care for physics effects... We could be doing so much better than this..

Red dead redemption was the last of mine like this. I started playing it on switch for the first time and within two hours I put it away and deleted it from my machine. Some games I played for longer thinking I’m having fun only to realize I’m not and so I stop playing. Metroid prime remastered was like this for me. And then strangely enough if I am having a lot of fun with the game, I will play at multiple times, especially if they are quick play throughs. Metroid dread did this for me. Some games are fun and some are not. And it’s not usually the ones I expected to be dull that end up being boring.

Great video. One big difference I’ve noticed with Retro games vs Modern games is the simplicity factor. When it comes to a lot of modern AAA games it seems they go for more immersion and scale rather than keeping it simple. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but I feel as it’s made a lot of modern AAA titles much more complicated to learn and have fun playing especially for the average/casual gamer such as myself. It’s like they want you to live in these games now and invest so much time/effort into them. There are obviously still a ton of newer indie games that go for more simplicity and that’s what I tend to lean more towards. Also that point you made about “games that are too good” is something I’ve actually thought about a lot as well. I put games like GTA in that category. Games that have a monopoly over their specific genre. GTA which is an open world/sandbox 3rd person game has had such a lock on that style of games, it makes pretty much every other game in that category, sort of irrelevant.

It's like with any industry, as you get more and more people involved, things improve on metrics xyz but become simultaneously worse on metrics abc. Generally, the average customer and funder become dumber. These contribute to the demand side "IQ". Likewise on the supply side, the average game developer and designer become dumber. Technology does progress and it does continue to diffuse, allowing people to take some advantage of it. However, the quality of the average product on metrics that depend more on specific human discretion (critical thinking) becomes worse. You end up with an increasing amount of products but an increasingly small portion of these are any good. Eventually the great majority of video games are below a certain threshold that we may categorize them garbage *for the most part*. It's all relative. Same goes for movies, books, academic publications, companies, etc. These are just patterns or facts that tend to emerge as the consequence of something you might simply call "mathematical relationships".

The truth why gaming is dying and it SUCKS so much..... is because the gameplay Concept never changes. Its always the same Concept, For example All Call of Duty Francise games are all the same concept of just running, shooting and get Kill Streak and repeat the same Cycle. Now there is a Call of duty Battle Royal which is obiously competition against Fortnite and Apex Legends but it still the same concept. The Game Industry is like "Being stuck in Never Land with Peter pan" That's why people gets hooked in Gaming and their services SUCKS!!! If Gaming was more creative in a way to help players make money online OR sharing their artwork with the gaming tools Developers provide in the most Simple and creative way to help them build their own Small business and understand marketing.... People will be super happy to be part of the Community. We need something "Outside the BOX!" I'm Dyslexic and I clearly understand what's going on!

Tbh, Elden Ring ruined gaming for me. It was such an amazing and unique experience. Completely different take on the Souls series and since then, I just can't play other soulslikes as it simply does not compare. IMO.

Its the triple A games and studios that are infested with corporatism that suck now. Indie games are actually the only ones that are fun these days.

Because on a $600 PS5, when a literal 93% of the games look like game boy advance... I feel I have every right to be insulted. Because when I just paid $60 for cyberpunk an bought a $600 console to find out the free upgrade was a $30 dlc, yeah I'm mad. When every new game is literally a Souls or Warframe knockoff... Yeah I want my dang $600 back. I could have spent it on paint to watch dry.....

*after Skyrim in 2011, gaming failed to evolve and reach the next level of creativity. everything became a copy paste and recycled concept....and developers just wanted to CASH IN instead of giving the fans something unique and groundbreaking 👎 Personally, I don't mind certain companies going bankrupt or out of business now....that's usually what happens when you get it wrong 😂 let bad developers die and those still among the living should take heed and actually put some thought into making the Best Possible Game* 🌠

Fun fact: if you go look up the parent companies for basically 99% of major gaming companies rn, you will find that all of them are owned by the same three parent companies :) Why do all games suck now? Its multiple reasons, but here are a couple. They're owned by the same small group of parent companies that are now able to sling hot garbage. How could they do this you may ask? Well, it's possible that if all of them sling hot garbage then we will be forced to pick the lesser poison of said garbage every year. Is it not odd to many of you that all games across the board just randomly got shit even the ones with great track history?? Secondly, The "Me Too" movement got a lot of "high-up" employees fired for sexual harassment and/or misconduct charges within multiple companies (look it up it's multiple big companies including Activision: Blizzard). So this in combination with all gaming companies getting slowly bought out by the same parent companies has made all games feel unoriginal and broken. None of the gaming companies we used to love are even run by the same people anymore and I'm sure the hiring process for developers/coders has changed dramatically as a result. Likely aiding in the fact that all new games feel old after an hour of gameplay. Some small companies are trying to make good games and some are pretty good but with small budgets and staff size its hard to dish out enough solid content to beat the major gaming companies.

You can thank all the people who play and spend money on mobile games. Those players who spend money on microtransactions on full priced games. Developers are going to easy lazy most profitable way to make revenue thanks to your fellow gamers who support this nonsense. There is no need for companies to male awesome games like they used to.

thats silly capitalism allowed games industry to flourish in the first place whats the biggest problem is the consumers themselves and their accepting of predatory behavior from companies
