Tbf Gary did kill a psychopath that was trying to kill him and he didn't really have any choice lol. Rick was a loan shark with more connections than Gary at the time, so even if he got arrested, he'd probably get bailed and then place a contract hit on Gary or his family. Hence that's why Gary killed him. He really had no choice because if Rick was arrested there's a chance that what I've just mentioned would've happened or if Rick wasn't arrested at the scene then he would've killed Gary and then targeted his family.

Also his background before all of that was him being a criminal and generally nasty piece of work. He's too judgemental considering his own history, the way he talks down about Max here was laughable when you think of everything he's done in his time on the show.

Besides whilst yes Gary has gone back to being a nasty bit of work, there was a period where he tried to be a decent guy, remember when he went into the army? Remember when he saved a number of residents from an armed shooter on the street a few Christmases ago (when Shona got shot and suffered amnesia)? That shows that there is a side where he tries to be a decent guy. It's just his troubled past always leads to him getting into trouble. He's an Anti-hero.
