Yeah. It's adapted from the "The Supergirl from Krypton" arc of the Superman/Batman comics series (which followed the "Public Enemies" story), but WB renamed the movie because they thought Apocalypse would give it a broader audience. That arc reintroduced Supergirl to a modern audience and established her current backstory, after a couple of decades of DC not wanting Superman to have any direct family.

Supergirl has a bit of a convoluted history in the comics. She was originally created in 1959, and established as Superman's cousin, and she's named Kara Zor-El. Her father, Zor-El is the brother to Superman's father, Jor-El. She variously appeared as a guest character in Superman comics (and a few other related titles - this is an era where Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane had their own separate comics as well) as well as occasional runs of her own. At times, she's had a secret identity of her own separate from Clark and the Kent family - for a long while, she's gone by the name Linda Danvers. She was killed off (and then retroactively had never existed) during the major crossover and universe-wide reset of Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, and DC's editorial pushed for Superman's supporting cast to be stripped back and streamlined, including reducing the number of Kryptonian characters (so emphasise Superman being the "Last Son of Krypton"). When Supergirl returned to publication, there were various convoluted ways around the ban on a Kryptonian origin - including a shapeshifting being who adopted the form of Supergirl known as Matrix, and Cir-El, Clark and Lois' daughter from a possible future who travelled back in time. There's also Power Girl, who is an adult version of Supergirl from another universe who has a complex history all her own, because she kept existing even when her home universe was wiped from existence. The 2003-2011 Superman/Batman comic series reintroduced a new version of Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman, and she's been established ever since. The animated movie "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" is based on that comics arc.

Well, in the comics Supergirl is (usually) Kara Zor-El, Superman's literal cousin, from Argo City, a city that managed to survive thanks to her father's genius. Personally I would have had her parents just hear Jor-El's plan all the way back in episode 1, put their sleeping daughter in the Phantom Zone and somehow send the "coordinates" to Earth so Superman could bring her out like Mala.

DC had a rule that Supes was the last Kryptonian for stories at the time, and it affected the animated shows as well. The original Supergirl was dead at this point, and we had the Matrix/Angel supergirl instead.

Hooray! Almost at Season 3! Granny, and all of the New Gods of Apokalips, are great villains. They are designed to be “gods” based on platonic ideals. Darkseid, for example, is the platonic personification of Tyranny. And Granny is the platonic personification of Child Abuse. Naturally, many of her appearances include pretty dark subject matter. But she’s a force worth opposing with heroic might!
@freefall94512 күн бұрын
Oh! And there is… an absolute minimal amount of live action Granny Goodness. You’ll run into it naturally in your DC journey. She is typically not a romantic interest of Darkseid at all. Just a wicked minion and sort of a “captain of the guard” type. Recent comics have tried to flesh her out and suggested an abusive sexual relationship between her and Darkseid; but that comic wasn’t super well received so it sort of exists I the realm of fan rejected quasi-canon!

Supergirl is such a great character both in the show and in the comics as she has a lot of survivors guilt over being one of the last members of her species and compared to Clark who never had a deep connection to Krypton and was raised on Earth, Kara on the other hand was raised on Krypton and experienced all their culture and had friends and family she loved but had to lose everything and watch her family and home perish. Supergirl in the comics is a bit more understandably jaded and as such she has trouble connecting to humanity since she had a to go through a long journey of truly feeling like Earth was her second home since she lost her first home. Fortunately she had Clark and the Kents who treated her like family and despite feelings like an immigrant on Earth she still has a good heart and loves Clark like an brother as much as he loves her like a sister despite being cousins. Btw Id highly recommend you go check out My Adventures With Superman show as the newest season (Season 2) of the show just introduced Kara and it honestly might be the best depiction of Supergirl Ive ever seen, its so good. Id also recommend reading Tom Kings Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow comic its such a great graphic novel that really shows how layered of a character Kara is.

At the time of the show, that version of Supergirl was dead (And maybe erased post-crisis) Instead there was some sort of energy being that took the shape of supergirl and eventually merged with a cultist and became some sort of angel (It's a bit convoluted, but I remember enjoying it). Her costume looked like the one in the show. They didn't want to use the current version, and weren't allowed to use the original, because DC didn't want there to be anymore Kryptonian besides Superman, So they just made her from a neighboring planet.

To give you some lore in the comics, Argo was a city on Krypton that Supergirl was from. Here they made it its own planet. Also, and I could be wrong about this, but I believe the reason they’re so similar to Kryptonian’s is because in this continuity, Argo was a colony of Krypton.

(I think granny goodness was in the background of the Snyder cut) Hopefully, James Gunn actually uses some of his other villains in upcoming movies. This version of Supergirl takes a couple different elements from a couple different Supergirls in the comics, but is mostly based on the most well known one, Kara Zor El. Main difference there is that Argo was a city that survived Krypton's destruction, but slowly died later, and Kara actually is Superman's biological cousin. She's one of my absolute favorite supeheroes, and that's in part due to this show and Justice League Unlimited. Kara's usually considered the first Supergirl, but there was a single issue that had a Supergirl before her. That was a woman created when Jimmy got hold of a magic artifact and, not wanting his pal to be lonely, wished for him to have a super girlfriend that could keep up with his lifestyle. She was an absolute menace, getting in the way of his saving people and nearly blowing his secret identity to Lois, but she sacrificed herself to save his life. This show's tie-in comic has an excellent issue starring Kara that explores her trauma and some of the history of this version of Argo. It's Superman Adventures #21. Just ignore what they say about Kryptonite in that issue though, as it doesn't match up with the actual show at all. I also really recommend Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow. It's a miniseries where Kara goes on a space road trip with a little girl who is trying to get revenge for the death of her father. The narration can be a bit much at times, but it's still an absolutely breathtaking book.

Granny Goodness isn't necessarily Darkseid's wife (as Darkseid already had a previous wife that was Suli, mother of Kalibak). Granny's just a very loyal minion among Darkseid's elite inner circle and she clearly leads a squad of female New God warriors known as the Furies with iconic ones like Lashina (the one with the electric whips), Mad Harriet (the one with the claws) and Stompa (the muscular one that crushes everything beneath her feet) and many more that aren't seen (Bernadeth, Gilotina, Bloody Mary, etc). And yeah. Clark and Kara are canonically cousins.

Kara (sometimes Linda) is a character who has been written out of the comics and rebooted and reimagined so many times, so many different ways, that there isn't really much of a throughline of who she is or how she came to be. She's always different. The one constant, I think, is that she was in her teens by the time she lost everything. There's something very painful about that, that sets her apart from Clark, who was too young to remember what he lost. That also puts them in a position to learn from each other. Watching Apocalypse would not be a bad idea.

This Supergirl has an origin similar the original comic version (though they still wouldn't let her be Kryptonian for the show as DC was still wanting Superman to be the only remaining one at the time.), and the eventual costume of the nonkryptonain Supergirl of the time, whose origin and nature is complicated and not something I can confidently explain. She started as one totally unrelated thing that choose to emulate Superman and then merged with someone else to become some sort of angel. I don't remember it all that well. The angel period was basically that outfit plus occasional wings of fire. I think the pre-angel part of the story was dating Lex at some point (Who had hair now) around the Death of Superman storyline. It was all very convoluted, but I actually liked it. However, I think I might be one of the few that did. Most people seemed to just be mad that she wasn't the old version. When they decided to bring a new version of Supergirl in that was closer to the original, they did give the angel Supergirl an actual ending story. Though some writer later decided to ruin that.

There's no love between Darkseid and Granny Goodness: Darkseid desires only one thing - a boot on the neck of every living thing, forever. Her Female Furies are basically Darkseid's elite bodyguards and shock troops.

I really reccomend Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, to be honest it is only Supergirl solo adventure i ever read but i think its showcases this character really well, and the art is beatiful. I also heard good things about Supergirl: Being Super but i didn't read that one yet so i can't say much more from personal experience. Supergirl was created in the 60s, i assume mostly for extending Superman brand, then in the 80s during Crisis on Infinite Earths she dies and for a long time the version of Supergirl that comes from Krypton doesn't really exists (because i think the idea was that Superman should be kept as the last Kryptoniana). There were other Supergirls, like Cir-El from the future or Matrix who was some weird shapeshifter. And also in this show, she is from sister planet instead of Krypton. It was until 2004 that they reintroduced her as Kryptonian and Superman's cousin. And yeah, you nailed the fact they relationship is very sibling like even tho theyre cousins, but since theyre the last of their kind they act more like siblings As far as i know Granny Goodness was never depicted as having romantic relationship with Darkseid, Orion's mom was called Tigra but i don't know a lot about her. Honestly, watching this reaction i realised that Granny Goodness is propably second most memorable villain from Apokolips after Darkseid himself, at least i seen Granny having her own schemes more often, and she is basicaly Darkseids main torturer and brainwasher while having this veil of care which is pretty neat and terrifying concept for a villain.

Honestly I was never a fan of Kara in the beginning she felt like Robin and Batgirl and for someone as big and larger than life as Superman he really didn’t a kid sidekick. But looking back I can appreciate her character she came from an advanced society and now she feels like she’s stuck in the stoneage with predated technology added that her baby cousin is now grownup into the world’s biggest hero and doesn’t need her protection anymore. So now its finding who out she is under the shadow of someone she was supposed to care for. Superman/Batman Apocalypse is a good movie if a little gritty compared to this its more or less a sequel to ‘Batman/Superman Public Enemies’ and anything with Kevin Conroy as Batman is always a treat. As for Granny Goodness she’s one of Darkseid’s lieutenants her job is to discipline the children of Apokolips to follow only Darkseid’s will. Her main enforcers are the Furies the most elite warriors in Darkseid’s army which is why they obeyed when Darkseid told them to punish Granny for her failure Granny may have raised them but Darkseid’s word is law.

_"added that her baby cousin is now grownup into the world’s biggest hero and doesn’t need her protection anymore. So now its finding who out she is under the shadow of someone she was supposed to care for. "_ You do know that's just a tweak they added on to her origin late in the game, right?

@ news to me. I’ve seen so many different variations of her origin that so much get blended up. I prefer the ones where she’s a brash hothead rather than the version the CW made.

@@BaithNa Hmmm. I was under the impression that the helmet gave him protection from telepathy before the movies, but that was a long time ago and my memory isn't great on the best of days. (I could be getting him confused with Juggernaut whose helmet gave him protection in the 90's cartoon at least.
