This story is word for word from Dr. Maria Montessori's son Mario. It is his retelling of what he learned from his mother over decades of working with her. Anyone is free to adapt it to his or her own style or school. This story, as are all the great lessons intended to spark the child's imagination - not to give current (and often changing) scientific information. This is allegorical. The elementary child's mind understands this intuitively - even if more literal adult thinking doesn't.

Part 2: My own version of the story starts: "Humans have always looked at the stars and wondered how the universe came to be, and how the earth came to be. Over the centuries people have come up with different stories to answer to this question -- and these answers are called religions. We'll talk about some of them another day. But we are lucky to live at a time when we can learn from science, and our investigations have given us certain hints about what happened in the beginning."

Part 3: And then we talk about the Big Bang, the continued expansion of the universe, etc. I make sure to say that we don't know everything, and that at home in their own families, children might have heard different stories (about God, Allah, the Hindu gods, etc.), and that these are answers too. Like many Montessori schools, ours is religiously diverse and we work to honor that diversity.

While this man seems like a wonderful teacher, I have to say as an AMI-trained elementary teacher that this religious telling is from the early 20th Century and is no longer typical in Montessori schools. We are given different versions of this lesson in AMI training, and unless teachers are working at a religiously-affiliated school, they are careful to keep the story neutral and scientific. Montessori education is not religious by nature, and I'm concerned that this video suggests otherwise.

I am finishing my AMI training currently (from a distance, very strange), and we received this version with the caveat that it will need to be adapted from the source (this) to meet the needs of your modern or secular school / prepared environment.

At that school, as opposed to Bella Vista North, I used to go to that school from the period time of Monday, April 24, 1978 through Thursday, July 3, 1980. Until moving to 7008 Wheeler Avenue in La Verne, CA, this was my public and permanent church school. Filling in for that school was Foothill Developmental School at 140 N. 5th Avenue in Monrovia, CA (tuition and bus for four weeks from Monday, July 23rd to Friday, August 17, 1979).
