I tried and tried to help my ex but I failed. He was in so deep and had become someone I didn't recognize. I finally decided to leave when I began to feel like my safety was in jeopardy. Dr. Hassan made a great point that I would like to reiterate with over 3 decades of conducting personal counselling behind me: his final straw, as it were, to getting out from under the cult had much more to do with folks asking him questions instead of berating him for joining a cult, tell him he's brainwashed, etc. A question does several things to the receiver. First, it gives them an important part in the process. Nuther words, they're important enough to be included and their answer is both sought out and deemed important. That goes a long way in preserving self-worth. Second is the query itself. A question can be asked, but not argued with. A person can either choose to answer it, not answer it...or ask for clarification. However, one cannot argue with a bona fide question. To do so is akin to arguing that bumblebees cannot fly because some engineer said so. No, they can fly--so no argument. Dr. H. has been brave and contributes much. Most folks who find themselves needing to 'get out' of a situation will mostly feel embarrassment and want the whole thing to go away. He didn't. When the cult of trump begins to crumble later this year and he's tossed out, lettuce remember that it will take time for his 'moonies' to go through the process and begin to return to sanity. We can berate them, call them dimwitted and stupid...or reintroduce them into reality. Many of our friends and family members have been caught up in this. Do we want them back? EXCELLENT interview!

I was sent to a cult church as a child. The first thing I was told was that if I sin, I would burn in hell. Then they told my if I give myself to Jesus, everything would be okay. Yes. The best teacher is someone that has experienced what he/she is teaching. As a health care worker, I have come across patients similar to Trump. These patients exhibiting malignant narcissism, control issues, bullying, early childhood issues, non-accountability through out life for their actions towards others, etc. Just my take, but I think Trump MAY also be on the Autism Spectrum as well as exhibiting what is referred to as, "The Dark Triad." For a brief period in 2018, while suffering from stress and lack of connection, I was sucked into the manosphere of conservative hatred against women and the "radical left". I have lost my son to this cult of Donald Trump, he never had any inclination toward republican politics, but he lost his wife 2 years ago unexpectedly after 15 years of marriage that left him a widow at 37 yrs with an 11-year-old son. His depression ans his anxiety had him sitting in his room at night listening to podcasters and you tube, ans the fact that he has to work so consyantly just to try to pay his rent and he got pulled into it. I met someone who was from an ultra religious group I knew nothing about. She became a really good friend. I was always asking questions and I know it caused her to think about “why”. She was also told that secular people were evil and would harm her, so my friendship made her question. Sadly, after many times of trying to leave her community (several hospitalizations and a stay in a rehab for trauma), she eventually gave up and went back. There was not enough mental health support to help deprogram her. She also needed financial support that I was unable to provide. I think about her almost every day. 💕

I grew up in Philadelphia in the 50s and 60s. In the late 60s and early 70s I had many friends who were artists and musicians who followed Guru Maharishi. Many of them gave their money to the Guru in order to eventually reach Nirvana. It was sad to watch these talented young people give their lives to him. It was a wake up call to the rest of us.
