I prefer Carmen's version as there is more contrast in her voice between the power and softness I feel. The audience are delighted and so is she with the performance. I like Netrebko very much but I think Carmen is the best when it comes to giving a passionate performance like Callas used to do. I think having trained both in dance and acting as well as opera really helps Carmen to give a great all-round performance always.

One of my favorite arias, and so far this is my favorite rendition of it I've heard. Not only is Carmen Monarcha's voice beautiful (unlike other singers, she doesn't ruin the warm syrupy sound of the music with excessive vibrato or showy hight notes), but this is one of the more perfect orchestrations of it I've heard, with Andre's violin providing a prominent beautiful accompaniment, just as Franz Lehar probably imagined.

Lovely…fine interpretation…but after hearing and seeing Anna Netrebko do this with her bounce and buoyancy, I'm afraid this has to take a back seat. Sorry Carmen.

Charles I agree Netrebko is excellent with her very flexible voice she but does not for me have the charisma or warmth of Monarcha who reminds me of the great Callas with her acting and audience communication skills so much but thankfully without the volatility of Callas! I believe Monarcha's interpretations of Ebben and Babbino Caro are more heartfelt than even those of Callas. I also prefer Monarcha and Mafioletti singing Barcarolle to Garanca and Netrebko. Monarcha's depth of tone is quite remarkable veering into contralto on Barcarolle..

***** Can't disagree with you, I've got to hear more of Carmen. The good news is there are 2 singers that can sing AND act this music out. I wish there were 2,000! Then opera could become what it was meant to be, a wedding of singing and acting, not just the posing and stiffness of purely bel canto.

***** I am really thrilled and charmed with Monarcha's meine lippen and ebben from La Wally. I don't know of Callas ever doing Meine lippen, The Ebben is sort of a three way tie for me, Callas, Netrebko, Monarcha although I lean toward Callas because it is NOT so pretty as the others. That's just me, weird maybe, but I wonder why there is no mention of Carmen doing complete opera roles? It's one thing to do a couple of arias in a show but quite another to perform grueling 2 hour opera performances. I'm not being a smart aleck, please understand, I am just curious
