I use this wine key: Forge de Laguiole Ebony
I have used this glass in this Video: Nude Stem Zero Elegant Red Wine
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
2019 Domaine A. & P. de Villaine Les Champs Cloux, Rully Premier Cru, France
www.wine-searc...
2013 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru Monopole, Cote de Nuits, France
www.wine-searc...
The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Some wines play in a different league: The Premier Grand Crus from Bordeaux, The Cult Cabernets from Napa, and Super Tuscan from Italy for instance. Above all of them hovers one winery though that represents the pinnacle of quality and fetches the highest prices anyone would be prepared to pay for a bottle of wine.
Wine lovers only need three letters to understand which winery I am talking about DRC, or more precisely: Domaine de la Romanee Conti. One Bottle from the Domaine shattered the record for 0.75 liters of fermented grape juice when the 1945 DRC Romanee Conti sold for 558.000 Dollars or 744 Dollars per Milliliter.
You have asked me many times and I have wanted to make a video about tasting a wine from DRC for a while, I have tried, but these wines are hard to get and extremely expensive. So when the good people from Idealwine reached out, asking me to collaborate with them I told them Yes, but only if I get to spend all of the money I make on this collaboration on one bottle of wine … a bottle of DRC to be more precise. So let's see whether I will get a bottle filled with the Drops of God and then check whether I have wasted a fortune … Shall we?
DRC is located in Burgundy right in the Côte D’Or in a little Village called Vosne Romanée. The village is pretty but looks like many other villages in Burgundy. Behind the village are the vineyards and they are meticulously tended - I have rarely seen tidier vineyards - but apart from that they do not have anything special about them.
However, this part of the golden Slope has been highly-priced for a long time. In 1760, the La Romanee vineyard was purchased by Louis François I de Bourbon, the Prince of Conti for 8,000 livres, which was a lot of money at the time. But the price had been driven up by other bidders, including the king’s mistress, Madame Pompadour.
He did not sell the wine - no - he kept it to himself and poured it at his parties to his rich and famous friends thus establishing the winery's reputation amongst the elites. He also changed the name to Romanee Conti. Over the centuries the estate changed hands a few times. The de Villaine family bought half of the estate’s shares in 1869; the other half has been owned by the Leroy family since 1942.
Today the vineyards of DRC are still a place of pilgrimage for winos from all corners of the world. And this wine nerd has visited the site many times over the years.

On the one hand, he's sacrificing his finances for this video, and on the other hand he's making an upfront investment on a video that will make him that amount many times over in the long-run. I love Konstantin's videos, but let's remember that KZbinrs are running businesses, so essentially he's getting paid to drink a wine that most people will never get to experience in their lifetimes. Lucky guy!

Amazing! No spittoon needed :) I like that Jancis Robinson has her mid 90s wine programs on YT so there she interviews Lalou and talks with renowned importers about DRC's prestige in the mid 90s saying that "some of these bottles cost hundreds per bottle". Little would they expect that it would be tens of thousands in the future :)

Konstantin I was lucky enough in 98 to visit the chateau, I met Monsieur de Villaine, I got an invite via Clive Coates I used to own a bistro we sold a bit of DRC to the famous people and they allowed me to visit it was an amazing experience I went to the Chais and the cellar master ( I cannot recall his name) spoke no English we tasted all the wines, every drop left in the beautiful Riedel glasses was poured back into the casks it was an unreal moment but I have to tell you that day La Tache from the barrel was the best wine, plumper, he then opened 2 old bottles for me to taste they were so kind to me I will never forget that morning, walking through those red gates where nobody else gets a chance.........drink well keep the videos coming

This was one of my favorite videos ever. I felt actually ur happiness there. My "wow moment" was last summer in north of Portugal when my uncle opened his refrigerator and asked me what I want to have. There were 3 bottles: one opened and 2 unopened. One was from douro, other from alentejo and the 3rd that my uncle had opened the day before, given by his brother in law and he didn't liked it, was a Jean Grivot Vosne-romanee 1997, I imediatly said that one, I spend the rest of a warm august day, helping my uncle finishing it under a ficus tree. Also, as we didn't have proper Pinot glasses, I improvised with gin tonic glasses😂.It was trully unexpected.

@@markevans506. . . Here’s a very simple fact about wine for you , Mark. A ‘$10 wine’ has about , wait for it … $1’s of wine content. A ‘$20’ bottle will deliver about ‘$10’s worth of wine in approximate terms; perhaps more depending on ‘overheads’ and ‘taxation’ in your home country. So, for ‘only’ paying about double - you will gain about ‘X10’-!?!.. the value. “ Buy less - but buy better “.

My “WoW” wine was a 05’ Anne Gros Echezeaux Grand Cru. A wine shop owner poured it for me and started my wine obsession. My wife and I honeymooned in France and got to meet Anne Gros and barrel tasted her Richebourg. We have 2015 in our cellar we plan on opening on our 10th anniversary in 2026. We will be a bit nervous opening it as well. The wine is currently valued around the $2000 range, and crazy to think we’re just going to drink it. When I tried DRC La Tache, the purity stood out, near flawless Not the best wine ever, but extremely memorable.

My wow moments have always revolved around more than just the wine. Sipping a Sandemans 40 year tawny looking out over the river in Porto, or doing a premium tasting at St Supery in Napa with thier oldest employee who was a fan of the Dodgers since the Brooklyn days talking baseball while he poured so many tastings of amazing wines, only to be joined by a couple and the guy was a fraternity brother of mine. It's the special moments that a really good wine gets paired with that has set it apart for me. I am sure they aren't as special I hold them in my mind.

I’ve had the opportunity to taste many a great wine over the years. Most of those came through the courtesy of wine distributors, or through the generosity of oenophiles with much deeper pockets and extensive cellars than I could imagine or ever realize. It was a 1966 DRC La Tâche at 28 years old that a customer brought in to have with a special meal that he had arranged in advance to have the head chef prepare for him. It was Fettucine Alfredo. Simple enough for him to prepare, but what made it special was the shaved white truffle that the patron brought along with him to top the dish. I was the only food server with some knowledge and appreciation of wine, and so he poured a taste for me. It was ethereal. The finish lasted five minutes, and I could think of little else for days.

My very first deep impact wow wine- moment was a Vosne-Romanee Les Genevrieres 1989 Domaine Leroy. I bought it in a wine shop in Tübingen which was owned by the parents of a school friend of mine for 89 DM! In 1994 . I will never forget this vibration and this deep silkiness, at same time the wine was that shy and modest, not loud at all. Aromas of orange, woody earth, oriental spices, pine-needles. You swim in the sea and a barely perceptible current of great force carries you away. Literally power without weight. Thank you for that very nice video.

They were having inventory problems and he asked me if I'd be interested in buying some of their "Captain's List" wines at cost so they could move off of these high priced non-sellers. I bought 26 bottles. Hundred Acre, Colgin, Harlan Estate were some of the labels I purchased and two 2002 La Tache. Each La Tache was $800. I held them in my seller for over 10 years. In 2017 I sold one at auction for $3800. I kept and drank the second. What an experience.

In the late '80's I was fortunate to go to a tasting of all 6 DRC wines from the recently released 1985 vintage put on by a wine store in Sydney. The thing that stood out was just the finesse and concentration of flavour in what looked to be a 'light weight' wine. Another memorable tasting was of a thimble-sized barrel sample of a pre-phylloxera barrel of Muscat held by Morris's in Rutherglen Australia which was used in minute quantities to 'complex-up' their Show Reserve barrels. Mick Morris had generously agreed to meet a couple of keen mid-20 year olds keen on their wine on a Sunday morning to bottle up a Show Reserve muscat because he was not at the tasting room on Saturday...he liked to talk to people who wanted that wine (then only $50, now $500+) After being led through the dirt-floored barrel storage shed to the Show Reserve barrel Mick proceeded to hand fill a bottle (spilling a little in the process). When I mentioned a friend of a friend had bought an extremely rare small bottle of his pre-phylloxera muscat at a charity auction he said we should probably try it!!! Another winding trip through the barrel shed led to a modest, and unassumingly small barrel of perhaps 90L of a Muscat made more than 100 years before. Mick led (it didn't pour) a tiny quantity of this treacly liquid into a small glass little bigger than a thimble and we waited a long while for it to slide down the sides of the glass. The taste was just extremely deeply concentrated muscat flavours, with not a hint of its 100 years of age...was it fresh?...I think you could probably describe it as such...it certainly was not tired. I'll always remember Mick Morris's generosity to a couple of keen young wine guys. I think I can still conjure up in my mind the taste of that group of DRC's (maybe not them individually) but certainly that pre-phylloxera muscat.

I opened a bottle of 1972 La Tache in the 90's and I still remember it like yesterday. The nose was as stunning and on the palate it was both massive and nimble. I can even remember which of my wine friends were with me that evening. One of the 10 greatest wines I have ever opened. I saved the bottle just to honor the event.

Sucha precious video Konstantin. One could feel your thrill and elevation during the tasting. Precious life moments that we could share with you in some way. Quite emotional episode, because it resonates with all of us wine lovers that also feel in heaven with a great bottle and the right food.

Another great video. I've never spent more than 30 dollars on a bottle of wine but the wow moment for me was discovering a particular vintage of a Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin from California that tasted as good as I ever thought wine could taste. I bought all that the wine shop had in stock and nearly cried when I ran out of it. The following vintage of the same wine was less than impressive. Thanks for allowing us to experience this very special tasting with you.

Thanks for sharing it Konstantin! My favourite big-shot moment is either finally tasting Haut Brion Blanc after missing it for many years (its hard to find!) and just having a fresh 2014 vintage in 2017, I thought, eh at least it is the real deal but had okay expectations, but it wasn't aged nor a 100 pt vintage. Wine laughed at me .. and was AMAZING, like 98-99 point amazing, DEEP notes of "aged Riesling" that petrolium flavour, fat body, juicy, clear white Bx notes but heavy and concentrated and the almost empty glass smelled ETHEREAL! Other big moments was a Latour 1900, orig cork and seal, B stand, freaking perfect. Tasted like an exceptional 1970 red Bx or so, no signs of being 118 yrs old at the time, just UNREAL.

Great video. Would love to hear how it evolved over the time you drank it Konstantin! One of my great wine moments was tasting through the '04s (E, GE, RSV, R, and LT) with AdV himself at a pinot noir event here in Australia, I think back in 2006 or 2007. Not the greatest vintage, but I mean...🤷‍♂. The pours were generous enough that I was able to hold onto a little of each until after the tasting and sneak the glasses back to my hotel room to linger over them without distraction. I had only been in the industry for 5 years or so back then, and I couldn't believe this was happening to me. It was as if there was a movie star in my room.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a few wow moments in my life. The greatest wow has to be when on my thirtieth birthday I was gifted a 6 bottle case of Chateau d’Yquem 1983 (that being my birth year) for which I still have 5 remaining. I opened the first bottle last year on my fortieth and it was absolutely fantastic. Amazing video! What a bottle and review! Superb, monsieur!

Hi Konstantin, I found your KZbin channel a couple of years ago when I was doing my WSET Level 3 and have always enjoyed it. While I have never had the pleasure of a DRC La Tache or Romanee Conti, I was able to have a tasting almost 40 years ago of a 1923 Les Richebourgs and I was actually able to purchase two (yes 2) bottles from the owner who initially purchased several bottles from an auction in the UK. It was truly spectacular, and I still have one of the empty bottles that I keep in my cellar as one of my greatest memories ever. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge and insight - and I really enjoyed watching you in ENVY being able to drink this bottle of La Tache ;-) Cheers !

It was in 1998...I was in a small family restaurant in Rue de Provence called Chez Catherine (it has since moved on to new premises and is run by the children) and the husband of Catherine had an extensive cellar of great wines. To his credit, he never put huge mark-ups on the wines, just a bit of profit on what he paid for them. The place was always packed and I booked the restaurant first...then my business trip. I was with work colleagues and bought a bottle of 1988 Grand Echezeaux from Domaine Leroy for £100. What a steal! I never knew wine could taste like this and was additionally fortunate as all but one of my work colleagues wanted white instead of red. Pure heaven! So I can imagine what your experience must have been like with the La Tache. Good drinking Konstantin!

My whow moment: Having a wine tasting in Montalcino, in the Enoteca Fortezza within the fortress. We had outstanding wines, Biondi Santi, Sassicaia, Cupano, Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuovo, Valdicava... But the star of the show was Giodo. Apart from the Sommelier. He took so much time for us, we chatted, he explained the terroir of Montalcino, the underground, the climate, the different wines. We sat there 2 hours, chatting, tasting, eating tuscan snacks, sun was going down, child was playing in the castle, it was the most wonderful wine evening of all time. The map of Montalcino on which he drew the soil and the wineyards is still hanging in our apartment. And afterwards we went back to Il Cocco, where we were standing in our camper in a beautiful site, a pine forest on top of a hill within the wineyards of Il Cocco. Funnily enough it was in the enoteca that i saw a DRC wine for the first time.

A couple of wow! moments for me: the first wine that got me into wine was 1992 Opus One. I was young and just out of college and didn't know that wine could taste so good. I was hooked! More recently, a bottle of 1947 Borgogno Riserva Barolo & a bottle of 1976 Villa Mt. Eden Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley). It's just astounding what great winemakers can make and how long their wines can last. Both still retained fruit and body with very elegant, balanced structure. Finally, 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. This wine blew me away because I had no idea that Chardonnay could last so long with such delicious character and perfect balance.

When I started my wine career in the early 1990s these bottles were expensive, $300-$500 per bottle depending on vineyard and vintage, but even I, a lowly wine waiter, could afford one as a splurge every now and again. Also, I was able to sell hundreds of bottles over the years to many normal folks. And then the commodification of everything happened. Clueless idiots who saw nothing more than $$$$$ started "investing" in wine. This ruined the wine industry. No wine is worth this kind of money except in the minds of oligarchs and moron day traders. I will never buy these wines again, and I wouldn't even if I could. The death of the secondary market can not come soon enough.

I'm happily jealous for you! 😊 So nice of iDealwine for the treat! My wow moments were: -2007 Barolo Riserva Borgogno -1993 Sassicaia -2017 Domaine de la Douaix. Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Le Clos des Fervelots I have a case of 2016 Les Champs Cloux on LCB which I might drinik some time in the future. I gather Domaine de Villaine is run by De Villaine's nephew, Pierre de Benoist and their wine style is mostly driven by Pierre which might help explaining why their wines cost so much less. That and the terroir, I'd think.

Love the video! It might not seem rational to spend this much on wine, but it's every wine lover's dream. My unforgettable wine moment was with one of its neighbors, a bottle of Arnoux Lachaux Vosne Romanée 1er Aux Reignot 2017. Shared with just one other person over lunch in Meursault. The aroma was like what I imagine the overly idyllic gardens in Game of Thrones would smell like. Palette was weightless. It really left us thirsty. I was lucky enough to 'only' pay 225 euro. Hoping I get to drink DRC one day as well

I have had the giant opportunity to attend a tasting of the full lineup of the Grands Crus from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, including la Tâche, from Échézeaux to La Romanée-Conti, and also le Montrachet! I was absolutely impressed by the depth of La Tâche, it has got so much to offer. Thanks for sharing this moment with us. I am already a customer of iDealwine since a long time, and they do have a great selection of young and old vintages. Cheers

Thank you Sir for this memorable tasting! My wow moment in red Burgundy was a 1959 Beaune Clos des Ursules (Jadot), tasted in 1989. Such a finesse! Oh, and the Musigny of the Domaine de Vogüé (any year!) In white, the Musigny from the same domaine is amazing (and quite rare). Have you tasted it? The most surprising: aligoté Sous Châtelet from Domaine d'Auvenay. Stunning! I did not expect that at all!

I can feel you so making this video !! For me DRC is the holy grail, and I too have the pictures at the Romanee Conti Vineyard. And I recognize the feeling, drinking that first bottle, about 1,5 year ago. I was working, smelling and looking at the bottle for minutes and minutes. And when I finally took a sip, a tear rolled down from my eyes. And that is quite unique for me, not so much into emotions. But this did it for me ! It was not the La Tache, but the Romanee St Vivant. Beautiful 😍😍. Is it perfect ? No, like you said, but the moment madeb it perfect !!
