Thanks for saving a really interesting piece. Meisner's version of this recorder/player is similar to others but seems like its built really well. I hope you'll do a Part 2!

Thanks for the nice comment and yes there will be a part two video. I sent the two cartridges out to be rebuilt and I will order a new playback and cutting stylus plus a 10pk of vinyl blanks.

My rca Victor had the same crystal pickup as yours . But my one was totally dead so I fitted a BSR mono cartridge . But the recorder head I just replaced the rubber suspension lined it all up called it done .

As you may have seen in the video I had mine rebuilt. The record head was dead and that was rebuilt. Cutting vinyl is different than cutting acetate or lacquer. I see some guys treat the disc with lighter fluid and then car wax. They also heat the disc. I think when I tried the sapphire stylus it dug deep and dragged down the turntable speed. Thanks!

Mine is currently being Repaired after a year on the waiting list, we decided to put a newer flip over type cartridge with both a LP and 78RPM stylus on mine so I can possibly play Early mono LPs on it along with the less harsh Varco cartridge that won’t track so hard on recordings. I’ve had mine since November 2008 I hope the 14 year wait is worth it.

Replacing the old crystal cartridge with a more modern Varco flip cartridge was an option I had considered. I decided to keep the machine closer to original by having the old cartridge rebuilt. I think the Varco will sound better. I hope you post a video. Thanks!

@@HD7100 14 years and $400 dollars later it will be worth the wait! It took me 3 years to record a cylinder record just because I wasn’t able to get ahold of any blanks Because other projects and life got in the way.

Good to hear your voice again, You mention that this is a home recording device. Was this a toy for a very rich kid or a device for an aspiring audio hobbiest?

Hi Dennis; I hope all is well with you in your retirement. From the late 1930s into the early 1950s before home tape recorders were being made the only way someone at home had to record audio (either using a microphone or the radio) was a record/recorder (like this one) or a wire recorder (I'm looking for one). Home tape recorders did not become available until sometime in the 1950s (I have a late 1950s Ampex tape recorder). The most common use for this machine was to record audio mail or home recorded records that they sent out to relatives and friends. They also recorded music and singing plus special things from the radio. These home recording machines have become somewhat rare and thats what interested me to acquire this machine and thus restore it. As you know; I like to collect and restore oddities such as this.

I'm starting to attempt and Meissner recorder/player and was wondering, what is that green wire coming from the storage trapdoor? It looks like it's attached to the loop and I was wondering if the wire is supposed to be soldered somewhere?
@HD7100 Жыл бұрын
The green wire is there to connect to an external long wire antenna for better service.
