Meiwa Kumquats from seed to fruit in under one and a half years - January 2018 through March 2019

This is the best kumquat seedling video I can find online since I grow them on my own for months but can't find anything in Chinese except germinating the seeds! This video really gave me the confidence to continue my kumquat planting indoor, and after 6 months, 5 seedlings are healthy living on my east facing balcony in Beijing. I use light weighted and ventilation friendly mixed soil with great drainage, because Monty said citrus hates sitting in water and Reddit said the kumquat seedlings' roots were weak. First months I moved them in terracotta pots, they stopped growing (in summer), I used LED plant lights to help them but still, they freeze. Then I figured it was the soil, I made it too ventilation friendly so the roots were not able to contact the soil properly. So I watered them more since the drainage was perfect and adding fertilizer according to how the leaves presented. In autumn, they suddenly speed up their growth, usually at least 2 new leaves once. Then I came back to this video again to learn how and when to prune the plant. Thank you, I think I will come back many times in the future.

I watched this video because a lovely man, who from Jamaica came migrated to the US to hang out at skateparks, gave my boyfriend and I a Kumquat after a skate session one day - it was my first time ever trying one and I loved it! I decided I wanted to try and grow a tree from the seed. So far it's grown a root - we'll see if it sprouts upward soon!

Thank you this comment!! My secret is fearlessness with hacking trees back haha. And not listing to naysayers in the bonsai community that told me it is impossible to be successful with bonsai indoors. Sure, it is hard, but that hasn't stopped me from trying! And I am not afraid to hack back a tree and risk it dying on me. I've killed many many many many trees being brutal with my bonsai technique :-)

8 months in NYC apartment !? That's a great result!. They are known for their notoriously slow growth, so it´s superb. Next time, if ever, you can try putting a net over the seeding to create some movement on the trunks and not be so boringly straight.

Very nice plants. The roots look healthier than I've ever seen on a citrus tree. What do you use for soil? It doesn't look like you use any dirt at all. I am very impressed by your skills. I try to be so delicate with my citrus trees but after watching this I see that is not necessary.

Hi! greetings from Argentina. I wanted to add one thing, that plant that you are showing would not be Meiwa (Scientific name: Fortunella lacrifolia) but it is kinzu or Fortunella hindsii (the wild Kumquat from Hong Kong). That is the species generally used for bonsai

Vert nice. Mine took 19 months till 2 ripe fruit on 1 tree with 3 out of 4 trees flowering. At 32 months all 4 have fruit on them with 1 tree loaded with 30 fruits nearing ripeness. I have no videos to share. I also did nothing to alter their shapes as they grew. I did not give them near as much winter light in the second winter. My aim was to keep them hapy and growth free

I thought I was getting a tree but ended up with seeds even though I searched for trees! Make sure to read the fine print!!! 5 seeds for $25 seems wicked expensive and another reason I thought it was plant! I have blood orange and varigated lemon from tractor supply that cost less and are doing great! What I wonder should I return? whay is germination rate like did you clip coat? paper towel method? I can still retirn them but if I can get 3/5 to go will keep em n start in grow tent.

awesome content - have you experimented or plan to grow typical 'outdoor tree species' as indoor bonsai, trees such as maple, oak and pine - i wonder if its possible? if you store them in a shiny and airy window position and keep them in a cold place during dormancy cycles perhaps?

I think the best "outdoor" (aka temperate climate) species that would work is the Chinese elm. The other species like maple, oaks and pine all need the winter resting period in order to stay alive.

Where I live, oaks, maples, pines, etc. lives naturally. About the dormant period, yes, you can put them into colder space, but there will still be one thing missing: snow, that acts like a blanket for the roots. And can you get indoors temperatures about -5 degrees Celsius? And keep it that way for about three months? That said, I´ve seen an evergreen oak! I was studying ecology at uni, and our teacher took us to local park (it was beginning of february, I think, anyway the important thing is that everything was under 3 cm of snow). And there it was, oak, common oak with full, big green leaves, covered in snow. Of course there was a secret to it - underground near its roots goes a hot-water pipe, so the root system is warm all year long. And it wasn´s some small tree, but big one, at least 15 m tall.

You made me buy some of these seeds too. How hard was getting them to germinate? Also, did the cuttings you took last year survive?

Awesome! They are easy to germinate if you place them on a wet napkin and stuff them in a ziplock bag. Keep that in a dark cupboard for a couple weeks and roots should start to grow. Once you have roots, plant that in a pot with some soil and keep covered with a plastic bag and place in front of a window until you have some leaves! Once you have your first set of true leaves, remove the plastic bag. That was my method and it worked well.

I can´t belive that they survived even when you cuted them out so much! why don´t you use normal soil? it is more like sand and rocks the one your using right? my kumquat is like 10 cm long, but the roots are also more or less the same, should I cut them out a little bit too? Thank you !

I noticed at least one of these trees had thorns. Did they all end up having thorns on their branches? I think it is typical for citrus grown from seed to revert to "wild" and have thorns on them. I live in N. Florida, and have some citrus trees, and have planted some from seed, and that is my observation - compared to typical root stock grafted citrus trees, which don't have thorns.

Great Job!! But are you sure these are Meiwa Kumquats? They seem to be very small like Hongkong Kumquats (Fortunella hindsii)

Hongkong are much smaller, meiwa have some fruit to it which looked like what he had in his hands. HK kumquat, although produce fast in under a year like his did, fruit is only as big as a dime and contains one single seed and basically nothing else.. no juice. HK is a better choice for bonsai though! Very pretty and small.
