"I wrote this song in the portal room alone over one of the instrumental tracks in that folder that was sent to me. It was a guitar loop by Pearl Lion. On each of my albums I like to include at least one "taboo" song about something many people deal with but no one talks about in music. I wanted to write a fun, lighthearted, song about being a person who experiences menstruation. How blood represents vitality and life. I wanted the chorus to be pretty and to use analogies for bleeding that were sweet. "Juice melting like raspberry, pomegranate it's so scary, how my aura got him howling at my moon cycle baby." The rumbling sounds that lead into the song are my actual period cramps I recorded on my phone. With the conflict of patriarchal society brainwashing straight cis men to believe they should have any kind of say over other people's bodies, and also the general kind of ick that they get from the discussion of menstruation, I wanted to make the song extra uncomfy for them by going on to describe a man who lives for period sex!" - Mel in an interview

I’ve always called it either my “moon” or my “cycle” my grandmother and mother were Wiccan. I had ceremony on a full moon when I had my first period. All the women in my family plus all the women and girl friends that were very close to me came and it was beautiful. I still have photos of that night and you can see “orbs” flying around in all the photos. We callled on our ancestors to guide me through life and womanhood and I believe those orbs were them.

Every since i heard Moon Cycle, I always imagined myself dancin to it in Gamelan dances?? idk how to explain, the way the rhythm flows makes each body/eye movement, delicate yet precise. It tells a story with no start but ends like a dream. idk maybe it's my lost roots callin but... could it also be a past life? a feminine one? w Mel's theme of rebirth, i spiritually connect this thru my soul :')

As a guy, I felt the empowerment of these lyrics. It’s like, you’re understanding what a female (or anyone who has to deals with something as harsh as periods) goes through when dealing with periods and all the reproductive hardships (yes, I mean pregnancy as well. I’m only bringing it up because of the lyric “I keep it handy, womb shedding any lessons/making room for blessings”, which could be taken out of context, but that’s how I see it 😭). Thanks Mel for this song 🙏🏼
