This song is about sexual harassment and how people tend to blame it on what the victim was wearing or doing instead of the actual culprit. The reason dress code was brought up in the song was because it enforces that mindset by telling young girls that they need to change what they're wearing and how they choose to express themselves so it isn't a distraction to other people. The lyrics "it's my fault cause I put icing on top now the boys want a taste of this strawberry shortcake" and "that's my bad, no one taught them not to grab" is referring to the unwanted attention and harassment gained from dressing a certain way but then lines like "so I'm stuffing my bra so mine look the best" show how she feels she needs to show off. Later the song tells it's viewers that it shouldn't be the girls responsibility to dress differently in hopes that people won't sexually harass them (especially when statistics show that how you dress has nothing to do with being harassed/molested/raped) in the lines "instead of making me feel bad for the body I got just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop".

I love how she mentions the dress code. I'm 12 and my school already has a ridiculous dress code obviously targeted at girls. They won't even let us wear leggings, LEGGINGS. I even asked about this and the principal just said it was to maintain a professional environment. Which I would be fine with if they didn't allow the boys to do whatever they wanted. Dyeing your hair rainbow?, completely fine, showing your shoulders (only for boys), totally fine, wearing shirts with profanity plastered on them? no one bats an eyelash. But of course, when the girls show a bit of shoulder, or are wearing a shirt that shows their midriffs if they lift up their hands, CRUCIFIED. All my male teachers explain this by saying that it would be distracting for the boys if our shorts are shorter than fingertip length, which disgusts me. Why should women be forced to conform to what will make the men comfortable. We should be able to express our bodies and not have to worry about being taken advantage of. If a girl looks at a boy who shows skin and is aroused, she's a slut. If a boy looks at a girl showing skin and is aroused he's just a regular boy. It was the girl's fault for dressing that way and she should be ashamed. It's just so horrible how even educators are sexualizing junior high girls. I even doubt the fact that the boys would care if we wore leggings or not. I mean leggings are skin tight, but so are tight jeans. I would even say that leggings show much less skin than most other things allowed in the dress code, but if it's normal for a girl to wear, it's obviously WAY too inappropriate. We really need to get our shit together. (sorry for swearing, I'm just really passionate about this since I was, myself, molested and had to go to therapy for years, while the person who violated me only got a slap on the wrist)

Mabel Yin Crouse awww I’m so sorry that happened to u! since 3rd grade at my school around April we got a lecture about dress code. after almost every point the teacher would say “ *girls* " as if it was our fault our summer clothes from last year were a little small and we hadn’t gotten new ones yet 🤦 I do anything to protest against our dress codes. Spaghetti straps? Done. booty shorts? Been there. Exposed shoulders? Heck yea! Crop tops? Yup. Dyed hair? ALWAYS!!! its gotten to the point that my school has given up on stopping me from dying my hair. I’ve had blue, black, green, metallic blue, pink streaks, blue streaks, and Im dying my hair purple tomorrow and when I go back to school after corona break my hair will still be purple. Tbh I can understand if a girl is wearing shorts that expose half of her ass or a crop top that cropped up to her boobs as that isn’t appropriate. But when girls get raped by boys in school it’s the boy’s fault. They didn’t get consent and they forced it. When my last bf and I got together (I was very shy then and didn’t really want to do *it*) he used to say “come on it’s not that bad” “what’s so wrong with it?” “come on baby girl don’t be shy” and I always kept a bit of a distance. By the last few months of our relationship I found myself pressuring myself into things I was too shy to do. It was horrible on me. When I didn’t do something I felt horrible. Luckily I’m not with him anymore

Dude I remember when I was like ten their was this mile run we had to do and all the girls (besides me, I was wearing knee shorts) got dress coded for wearing short shorts. When they asked why the teacher said "so it does not distract the boys"(the dialogue is a bit fuzzy it was a while ago) Me:what did you say? Teach: they are dress coded to not distract boys Me:did you ask the boys if they were distracted? Teach:well no but- Me: so your saying it's the adults making these rules? Teach:yes Me: so you are saying that you are looking at kids to judge if what they are wearing is inappropriate? Teach: what! No- Me: that's like exactly what u said. The teacher just gave up, but the girls still got in trouble tho...

Yall are missing the point. Strawberry Shortcake is not about changing your body like orange juice and mrs. Potato head, it's about how society makes you feel bad about you body, how they say its your fault that boys are looking at you because you dress that way, or your body is too "womanly" for a girl. Making them feel that their body is the cause of the boys wanting her strawberry shortcake, this problem ties to dress code problems and body positivity problems. "I can't blame him for raping me, my boobs are too big." "I can't blame him for looking, my skirt is too short." But really it's his fault and he should know better. Edit: I just wanted to point out that if you got the point already, then congrats, but I was referring to the people who were calling it *at the time of posting,* "cake 2" or "potato head 2" and giving meanings for the song, that was only a part of the equation not all. I didn't even get all the parts (as people are adding on thx you!) So please stop commenting "I think everyone got it" because it's unnecessary and you don't speak for everyone.

This is my interpretation of the song: Strawberry shortcake is... I think we all know. The icing on top is her bodily assets that make it “okay” for guys to look at her. Basically, guy should be taught to not objectify women, and girls shouldn’t be dress coded for wearing things that are “too short” because it’s not her fault she was built like that.

This song is good, but it kind of triggers my anxiety because of harassment I faced when I was a girl. From being sexually harassed from 7th grade to 9th grade to a boy (I barely knew mind you) grabbing me by my waist and telling me I was his and kissing me on my birthday. I had a boyfriend (or appeared to have one since we were forced into it by our peers when we were better off as friends) and on our fourth aniversarry I wanted to give him my first kiss. Later that year that boy who stole my first kiss tried to claim me as his and I told him I had a boyfriend, but he didn't care. Only when my boyfriend left me that summer and we went back to school did he stop, glare at me the last time I saw him, and disappear from the school. I felt disgusted with myself, and when I tell people my story they always ask what I was wearing or if I flirted with him. I never wear anything revealing, never have. Jeans and a sweatshirt is how I go and have gone for years. And I couldn't flirt to save my life, never have either. He did this all on his own and ruined my life... *but, it's my fault right?*

@@sh7ggy Its about both actually adding on to that woman are mainly blamed for the other person's actions. The lyrics "Got boys acting like they ain't seen skin before got sent home to change 'cause my skirt was too short" is an example of that and "It's my fault it's my fault cause I put the icing on" can also be a representation of that. The claim about it being related to sexual harassment is proven mainly by the fact that in the song Melanie is comparing females to strawberry shortcake and comparing icing to a sort of clothing that may show skin or be considered "slutty". Cause of this, boys want a "taste" of the "strawberry shortcake" and whenever the boy gets rejected they decide to bash the female on their body. It's very sad but true an example of this can be where a woman gets catcalled then rejects the other party and gets called badly on their body.

This is easily my favorite song on K-12, I love that she is showing the double standard, to be as pretty and desirable as possible, but to be blamed when you're taken advantage of. And you look through the comments, story after story of girls being objectified and defiled like they aren't even people. I seriously applaud Melanie for giving these true meanings to her songs, rather than ignoring or perpetuating the problem like a lot of popular artists.

When I first heard the whole song I thought it was about two people. Person A: wanting to be like the pretty one and having these feelings of changing and when she tries she gets called out Person B: the pretty one That person A wants to be. But, because she’s so pretty and wears that kind of clothing it makes boys want to Lust after her. But, now I know it’s not about two people. It’s about the things I just said but there isn’t two people.... it sends a message. So, don’t reply if I am wrong it was just my first thought when I heard it the first time but now I understand

*this song is really powerful, the lyrics saying "just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop" really is true, so many young/ old people get SEXUALLY ASSAULTED, and these lyrics have a deeper meaning than a lot of songs, its about society making you uncomfortable in the body you have, and men also, like consent is a human right, it's not 'sexy' it's a basic human right, also the plain fact that this is real life! I ain't sugar coating nothin' it's sad, painful and honestly hard, so yeah!* 💛

I was doing a sporting event in the middle of my school day once (it has a uniform) and we had to get changed as soon as we arrived. We wear skorts (shorts and a skirt combined) for our regular gender segregated pe class. Guys wore their shorts with bare legs, but we had to wear skins in the middle of summer so our legs weren’t out for an extra two hours. Absolute bullshit. I’m so sick of going to a place that is more concerned about if my ankles are showing (an actual thing you can get a note for) rather than teaching boys not to sexualise very non-sexual body parts. Cover our boobs? Okay. Wear tights so our panties don’t show? Fair enough. But on a school trip we weren’t allowed to have our shoulders exposed and shorts had to reach at least mid thigh, no skirts. I can tell you that not a single boy even glanced in the direction of a thigh but hey, maybe that’s the restrictions working. A big reason this happens is so backwards, women were considered a right for men, almost property. They’d cover them up because they didn’t trust them around other men (slut shaming culture). The idea of a naked women became so uncommon to young men that anything they could get caused a reaction. Another example is breasts. Is there anything inherently sexy about them? No. You could argue that it differentiated them from men but really it was just another thing that men could control about women. Women were so suppressed mentally that even today there is mental strain of women. The idea that women will never be as good as men means that women lose motivation and end up trying to appeal physically to men instead. A women’s easiest way to success is to get a rich husband and live of him, it’s smart but also shameful. Even if you were with your husband before he was rich there is always the thought in peoples minds that you’re a gold digger. Sorry I ranted, anyway I love this fucking song and everything about it.

All you saw was a little bit of skin between the boot and the bottom of my knee I was sent to the office and not allowed to go to class until someone brought me a change of clothes from home. Sat in that office all day cause my parents were at work and given detention for missing classes. This is the norm for school systems. And also this song is very underrated idk since its one that sheds light on the day to day problems girls/women face. And its very sad that all/ most girls have to be taught at a young age that stuff like this happens u just need to know its not your fault, just because society made it easier to blame the victims, have a stronger mind set and bring the true culprit the blame they need and honestly if ur doing this to others stop *PERIODT*
