It could just be a theory, but I think the game buttons are referring to Mel’s experience as a celebrity. “Say they’re demonic” I think is referring to Mel’s general aesthetic for her videos. “Give them long hair” is referring to people hating on her pixie cut and wanted her to keep it long. “Make them tall and skinny” refers to people body shaming her when Portals was released. “Chase them for a photo” refers to people taking pictures of her without even asking first. “Call them a B for being human” refers to Mel setting her boundaries and her “fans” call her rude just for having thoughts and feelings of her own. I also loved the representation of how Mel is being controlled by society, just like how a character is in a video game. And I also think the girl at the end is a toxic, obsessive fan, and when the screen said “Game Over” is represents Mel being her own person and making her own choices, and the toxic fan is very upset about it

I’ve been a fan of Melanie Martinez since her days on The Voice. So this Faerie is Melanie’s 2nd persona. Her first persona was Crybaby, and now this is her new persona after being reborn. All her songs and Albums have a story. (Sorda like an Anthology, but there’s an “order” to watch them. ). First, her Cry Baby Album. This one tells the child era stories (e.g. how she got the name, dysfunctional family, social life, etc). Each song in Cry Baby has a music video to it. Definitely look up the order yall wanna watch it in. Lol Her second album K-12, tells Crybaby’s story through school and other things surrounding school (e.g. authority, rules, norms, peer pressure, etc.) This album has a whole MOVIE for it. Definitely recommend you watch it!!! Now, we’re caught up to Melanie’s third album, PORTALS. In this album or era, Melanie has “killed” Crybaby, but more like she’s transformed and ascended into a higher being or form. So yea, definitely look into watching her older stuff so you get an idea of how she has grown as an artist and as a person. Then the other PORTAL songs will make sense. lol

I love this song and the video is awesome too. I believe the song is about a person attracted to a female just for her body and sex. The lyric “eyes on the prize” I think is about her saying focus on me as a person not my 🍒. Lots of lyrics about being thirsty, being too fast, having tunnel vision (only wanting sex). She spots the tricks, holding her like your rushing to my thighs, playing house to distract me, your focus is empty (no love just sex), etc. She knows the love games played (to impress) in order get someone to bed. She says “I’m more than that.” The video game world in the video is great as well. The ending with the 💻in the shape of a ❤️ was cool too. I took it to mean the love games we play. It appears it did not work out though and it was game over as her ❤️ 💻 caught on fire. Can’t play that particular game anymore. Gotta move on. The last song lyric also ended with “What could have been we’ll never know.” Not a happy ending for that romance is my take but man what a great song and video. She’s amazing!
