If you ask a Filipino how fluent they are in FILIPINO Language, 80% will fail, becuase most of us MIX tagalog, English and Spanish in our day to day converse

Bahag = is the wrap around cloth for men (yeah.. like a loin cloth). Look up "Igorot male clothing" to see what it looks like. Hari = is king. I think the reason why rainbow is called like this in Tagalog is because, the "bahag" of a king is colorful. Just a trivia to help you remember the word 😊 Parisukat/parihaba = square/rectangle Root word is "Paris" means "the same" (it is the same with "pareho"). Sukat is measure or size. Haba is length. Parisukat = same sides lengths Parihaba = same lenght of the longest lines (maybe it could be term as "parishaba") Pagkakaibigan = friendship. Fun fact. It could also mean "becoming lovers" 😊 Root word is "ibig" means "love" (it could also mean "want") Kaibigan = friend Ka-ibigan = lover (if you put the emphasis in "ka".) I think "ka" is "becoming part of" Ka-mag-anak = a relation Ka-opisina = officemate

if you're wondering why they were having a hard time translating english words to tagalog eventhough they are filipino and they understand the given words...well, it's complicated. Filipino is Philippines' national language. It's like an “attempt” to unify all existing languages here in the Philippines. Because there are 186 existing languages in the Philippines. So, filipino language consists of different words from different languages (including english). and yes, filipino language and tagalog are two different languages. personally, the Filipino language gives an impression of being a “book language” or the language use in the book 'cause you don't usually use it in every day conversation. So, Filipino is our national language, English is our second official language, Tagalog is just one of the most spoken languages here in the Philippines. There are words that Filipinos are more comfortable to use when it's in english than when it's in tagalog. That's why in this video, eventhough the five of them understand the given english words, they still find it hard to translate it in tagalog. and in reality, filipinos can't really speak the filipino language very well. it is even impossible for us to speak tagalog without using any english words, therefore, taglish exists. and i think we can't survive a day without using english words or phrases. another info: we also use literally a lot of spanish words and phrases in our daily lives. actually, sometimes we don't even realize that it is a spanish word and not tagalog just like for example... here in this video, the word is “green” and they translated it to “berde” and considered correct. “berde” is originated from a spanish word “verde”. i'ts not wrong (i guess), but there's more correct translation of green into tagalog/filipino. so, green is luntian in tagalog/filipino.

This is true. I, a Filipino myself, cannot speak the Filipino language very well because it is not my first language. My first languages spoken are Illonggo and Bisaya, and my second language is English. That's why sometimes having to have a conversation with a person in pure Filipino is hard because I need to translate it into the language I'm used to.

Translating Filipino or Tagalog to English and vice versa can be really difficult. One possible reason is because in either language, other people can still understand so there is no need to translate anyway. 😅 And also, many words that are commonly used nowadays are loanwords, even if there is a Tagalog translation.

That was fun! I love that you played the game with them. The staff’s prompts went so quickly for Stell but the boys gave each other a little breathing time, which is perfect for you to play along😆 Ken, especially, got more leeway for being non-native for Tagalog. I’m a little surprised that no one remembered “palito” for toothpick, but I think the time crunch can really make people’s minds go blank for a second, like how Josh blanked for “bisikleta”. For sky, the word for it is indeed “alapaap” but “langit” (heaven) is more used in conversation, I feel. Aside from that and “agham”, a lot of these words are commonly used in conversation, I think, so they can be handy if you do learn or at least understand them, but you can also get away with just using the English words. The “ka-… -an”conjugation/formation (like in “kalayaan”) is on a rather intermediate level but once you see it, you’ll notice that it comes up a lot.

Green = Lunti or luntian. Instruction = Tagubilin. These are words I haven’t heard in easily 50 plus years…. words spoken when “taglish” or Tagalog-English has yet to gain mainstream.

Rainbow and "bahaghari" are both compound words, but "bahag" doesn't translate to "rain". "Bahag" is a simple piece of cloth that's wrapped and tied across the waist to cover private parts before people started sewing undergarments, and it was first to be to be given the name of .G-String, "Hari" also, doesn't translate to "bow", it translate to "King". So, good luck on your tagalog lessons.
