Isn’t it mind boggling to reflect upon the diversity and timelessness of the practices of our Sanatana Dharma? The family traditions that we uphold, the art forms that we practice, the rituals that we observe, the customs that we follow and so many more aspects of our lifestyle are but a manifestation of this beautiful culture that we are privileged to call our own!
We, at Rise of Margazhi delight in celebrating and presenting some of these lesser known treasures, or _*Parambarya Pokkishams*_, as we call them. This year, our quest took us to *Melattur*, a little town near Tanjavur. Seemingly nondescript otherwise, the avatar that Melattur assumes in the month of May every year is nothing short of a phenomenon.
Why ?
The *Melattur Bhagavatha Mela* is an annual tradition that dates back to several decades, where patrons and rasikas from all parts of the world congregate to witness stunning Nrithya-natakas ( dance-dramas) presented by artists, nay, Bhagavathas of the highest caliber. With deep Bhakti-Bhava and Shradhdha, the Bhagavathas depict popular episodes from the Bhagavatha Puranam, like Prahlada Charitham, Sita Parinayam and so on, with several nuances that are unique to this Mela.
Our team was fortunate to witness this phenomenon and capture interesting facets of it in a unique two-part docu-film that is all set to premiere this year in Rise of Margazhi. From interactions with members of the very family that instituted and upholds this tradition to date and snippets of the Mela, to the prep behind the scenes and the pulse of the Bhagavathas and rasikas, this Parambarya Pokkisham promises to be a one-of-a kind experiential segment. Stay tuned and watch out for this very special premiere this Margazhi!
