In 1980 I was a student living in al one bedroom flat in Motherwell St. Sth Yarra, which cost me $32.00 per week! Melbourne had so much going for it, parties, theatre, live music every night at some pub or other, all affordable even though I only worked part time in hospitality.I also had a car and used to drive to the country often. What happened to our economy?

@Panty Sniffer let me introduce you to Dan Andrews then. Handed billions over to China owned John Holland cos they alleged cost overruns on the tunnel and didn’t quibble one bit and just sold state land for under the market price in northern Victoria to a Chinese company. And his ‘commercial confidence’ agreement we weren’t allowed to see.

@@andyrob3259 The spivs of the 80's long predate Dan. ''Commercial in confidence'' is a Liberal mantra and hardly unique to Melbourne. Who sold John Holland - and every goddamn things else - to China in the first place ? Your piece is a small one.

Hi John. The streets in Port Melbourne were the worst affected when some were removed to make way to the Westgate Fwy and the construction of the Citylink tunnels. Montague, that small suburb, lost most streets near the Yarra side (now Southbank). A lot has changed around the area, including the demolition of foundries, factories, warehouses and a coal fired power generator (I think it's still there half buried). The Dunlop tyre factory was shut down and became a self storage for some time. The Allen's confectionery factory also went down to make way to the new tram lines. In the early 50s my dad and his brother opened a mechanic workshop at the present location in a street adjacent to the Yarra river (no longer there), where Montague Street meets the Westgate Freeway, up until the demolition that led to the construction the Westgate/City link project. Although, many things were demolished, some were left behind as tourist attraction, the old St. Kilda/Port Melbourne rail bridge across the Yarra is still there, the old lead shot factory, etc. If you remember any of that. Also, St. Kilda was so much better in the 50s than now. All you see now is Luna Park, but back in those years St. Kilda had many amusement parlour, including the infamous indoor Dodge 'em boats, where it was closed down immediately after there had been an electrocution incident when one boat rider slipped and fell in the water while holding on the live mast. There were about 6 other amusement galleries in that plot of land next to the Palais Theatre, if you know any of this.

@@mickcarson8504 indeed I do Mick. A great number of the places you mention I knew of and experienced. Of course I spent many wonderful occasions ice-skating at St Moritz on Upper Beacconsfield Parade until it was pulled down to build the hotel. The entertainment triangle in St Klida I remember - however you just helped a very deep and forgotten memory to re-emerge of the water based dodge-ems. They must have gone in the very early 70's. I grew up in Williamstown of the late 60's, early 70's when nobody knew where Willy was - they all thought it was near Geelong!! So being a Port Melbourne lad, you'd know of the old ferry which crossed from North Road, Newport to Williamstown Road, Port Melbourne? All of the areas you mentioned I have memories of - hasn't Melbourne changed?

@@harvey1965 I am glad you were able to open the picture. I thought is wouldn't allow. Williamstown has changed a lot over the years. From... "Oh, Williamstown, that dump..." to... "Oh, let's live in Williamstown, that high class, posh place". Old homes were either demolished to make condos, units and some two storey homes. Streets were changed as well. Last time I visited the place was in 2006 with my lady on our way to the miniature steam train park. I was impressed to see most old homes, Victorian, Edwardian, Californian, etc., were spared from the bulldozer. They are like new and quite pleasant to look at. A lot of rich people now live there. In fact Williamstown is way better than Toorak, or Kew.

Economically speaking Melbourne and Australia as a whole was a much better place than now. Kids would grow up playing in the parks not with the play station. But boy was it a cemetary for many adults. Shops and everything would close super early. Saturdays at mid day. Alot more people would have barbecues in their back yard with friends than these days though. And though nightclubs didn't close as late as some do these days it was a faaaar better vibe. There's so much violence and drugs these days. People in general were alot more decent , although their was alot more ignorant racist pricks as well. Cities evolve. For better and for worse.

We had lots of hope for our futures. We were mostly happy. Everyone felt pretty equal. People weren't so easily offended. There was no such thing as tagging.
