Catch the number 96 tram, in Bourke St, to Acland St, St Kilda. Plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. You have Luna Park and the beach right there. The Esplanade Market, on Sundays. There’s also the iconic Esplanade Hotel ( the Espy).

Puffing billy is a steam train that runs through some beautiful Forrest area out of Melbourne. About an hour away. Also Healesville sanctuary is about an hour and half away and is a great tourist spot to see Australian wildlife. Beautiful area too.

Hello! Melburnian here! I hope you enjoyed your trip to marvellous Melbourne! A few facts: 1. Melbournes tram network is the largest in the world. 2. The state library is one of the oldest free libraries in the world, and the first free library in Australia. 3. The shopping centre you were at (Emporium) is actually built within an old laneway and the old Myer offices. 4. Melbourne has over 100 art galleries and more than a dozen museums, with the NGV being the largest in Australia. 5. Melbourne was the richest city in the world between 1855 and 1890s, giving way to elaborate buildings such as the Rialto building, ANZ bank, Parliament House and many that have been demolished.

1. Sarajevo in Bosnia was the first city in Europe to establish a tram network. It was under siege for almost 4 years where everything was almost destroyed. We expect Melbourne to follow suite some time in the future.

@@australiaprisonisland9156 I highly doubt it. Melburnians such as myself heavily rely on the tram network, which is very handy when you need to travel short distances. Plus, tourists love our trams. Sarajevo was the first city in Europe and second city in the world to have a fully electric tram network.

Thank you for taking me home to Melbourne. I was born in Sydney and I grew up in NSW but something was pulling me to Melbourne. I finally went there when I was 19 and fell in love. In my early 20’s we finally moved there and I was looking forward to some cold weather.we had two weeks of a heatwave, no day went below 44C and the nights stayed above 28C. We didn’t even own a fan and the State was sold out of them. If I had a cold shower I was hot and wet before getting dried. The elderly would sleep on the beaches to get any breeze they could, they made a law that said they couldn’t and many died in their homes. We lived in every State for my husbands job but we always went back to Melbourne. Most of our children still live there and the other one is at the top in Cairns with his family. We have retired on a beach above Bundaberg in Queensland. Most of my life has been lived at the beach and now my bones need to be warmer. I needed to go home without driving for 10 days to get there. We are leaving soon to go back so my husband can work for 5 weeks so the man he is replacing can go on holiday. I miss all of my family. Have fun.

Try some of these. In Melbourne and nearby inner city suburbs: - Go to the yarra river bars - Abory Afloat and Ponyfish - Visit Crown Casino at night, Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Rd (great view back to the Melbourne CBD), - Sports : MCG tour, visit Albert Park Lake (home of the F1 Grand Prix). - Nearby suburbs of note : Fitzroy (Brunswick St), Carlton, St Kilda. - Go to Easys for burgers (eat in train carriages perched on top of a building in Collingwood - yes Google it!) - Queen Victoria Market - Melbourne CBD laneways for food/bars etc - Chinatown Further out from Melbourne (Day or Two day trips): - Great Ocean Road (12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Torquay, Lorne, Otway Ranges, Gibson Steps, Kennet River) - dont miss it - Philip Island (Penguins!) - also home to the MotoGP track, Koala Park, Beaches - Wilson's Prom - incl squecky beach - Grampians mountain range - Yarra Valley (wineries) - Sovereign Hill (Ballarat) - old mining town and reenactment village where the Australian Gold Rush took place in the 1850s Hope that helps

Although there are many neighbourhoods worth exploring outside the city centre I’d recommend anyone visiting Melbourne to walk the full length of Little Collins st, Collins st and Flinders Lane.. These 3 streets showcase most of Melbourne’s best architecture and along with the laneways that stem from them you will find most of the best cafes, restaurants, boutiques and street art. I’d also recommend walking through near by East Melbourne to see a very charming residential area that has changed little since the 1800’s.

July-August is absolutely brutal IMO - leaden grey skies and drizzling rain - but those who are into food and coffee can find shelter in one of the cafes or restaurants. A lot of our visitors here in the Top End dry season (April-Nov) are from Victoria - its a budget holiday compared to Port Douglas or the Whitsundays. Good luck with the rest of your trip.

Hi Ash, hi Kels, thanks for bringing back very nice memories. Unfortunately you missed the AO, free train ride when you hold a ticket which isnt so expensive for a 3 days ground card. Well, not sure if tours are availabe after the tournament. Visit the victoria market. First the food market and try fresh food as well the general market afterwards. Here you will find the most variety of souvenirs as well, but I think the close shortly after midday already. Yes, shopping centers are huge and you dont need to cross the road from one to another. Enjoy the street musicians as well. Explore chinatown, visit the German Hofbräuhaus in Market Ln and of course try greek food. As you know Melb is the biggest greek community outside Greece. As I am told its safe as long as you stay within CBD and of course usually in all bigger cities in the world there are areas you shouldnt be especially at night. Enjoy your stay as I did. Hope to get more footage. At least ask loonley planet what to see, what to do even just a days trip away. Have fun, stay safe and healthy.

You made the comment of Melbourne like London - the bridge near Flinders street station (princes bridge) is similar to blackfriars bridge crossing the thames. Also Harry houdini did a stunt of the bridge and got caught up with a dead body and nearly drowned. It was named Marvelous Melbourne during the gold rush in 1860-1860s (dont know it lived up to its name).

Known for South Melbourne Dim SIms. I recommend the fresh seafood in the Deli Aisle. Aptus freshly shucked Oysters are fantastic. Or next door ( next Aisle) they have 2 counters one for hot one for cold prepared seafood. . this is also very close the the beach. Between Port Melbourne and Middle Park Beach

30 k’s from City is the Dandenong ranges. Lots of cute little towns dotted in amongst the rainforest Lyerbirds and other fauna are there also. Even little restaurants set in the bush, this is Melbourne‘s weekend playground. One hour from Melbourne is Geelong then Torquay and Bells Beach, home to world class surfing championships, then there’s the world-famous Great Ocean Road. Awesome views of the ocean hundreds of feet below as the road snakes around the mountain.

The only city in the world to win 'World's Most Livable City' 7 years running, just won 'World's Friendliest City' this year and thanks to the gold rush was the richest city in the world back in the 1880's

@@psychedelicprawncrumpets9479 My immediate thought when we first won it was how bad are the other cities... but we'll take it, I'm more proud of being the city that created Aussie Rules football, no other sport in the world comes near it

Melbourne was never the capital before Canberra. It just hosted parliament before Canberra was built.

The capital city of a country is defined as where parliament sits. That was the case for melbourne from 1901 to 1927. Therefore Melbourne was the capital of australia from that time. Not difficult.

Melbourne was once very diverse, now it's China. I miss the old Melbourne from early 2000 till 2017 everything was great. Now, Victoria has turned into a police state. The healthcare system has become of low quality since the pandemic. You get too many fines while driving, the roads are set in a way so they can easily fine you. The Chinese have taken over. Even shops like Myer are being taken over by the Chinese. Banks and shops are mostly being operated by the Chinese who can barely speak English. It's painful to deal with them when you walk into high-end shops like Myer or call the bank. You struggle to understand their English. I don't understand why Chinese people being from a highly developed country like China is flooding this country. I understand why people from poor, underdeveloped countries move here, but not sure why people from developed nations like China move here. Even the Indians left during the pandemic. Since the pandemic, Melbourne has been *invaded* by the Chinese. I found it very strange, because they were the ones who caused the pandemic, yet they are the ones that are flooding the country. It doesn't make sense.
