Thanks Geoffrey, I had noticed that, so I've filled that gap now! Metro Tunnel is a really interesting project and I've learned so much myself from putting this (and the next video) together. Yes, I filmed Cross River Rail over Easter, so that will be coming in May, probably as a 3 part series. I got some of Dutton Park, without its tracks during the Easter shutdown. Hopefully all the new tracks are now in place now, as I believe the lines reopen on Wednesday!

For those that think $12 billion isn't value for money, this is has the passenger capacity of a 30 lane freeway through the centre of Melbourne, but without the space, noise and parking requirements. If this weren't built, a much larger investment would be required in road infrastructure. It not only facilitates travel to the CBD, but will also provide travel times between eastern and western suburbs that are competitive with car travel. For example Caulfield to Sunshine will be 31 minutes compare with 34 minutes by car without congestion, or 1 hour by train at present.
@TransportVlog

That's a great way of putting it Malcolm! Really puts the $12 billion investment into context! In a few years time, when people are reaping the benefits of metro tunnel, the price tag will pale into insignificance.

My understanding is that Sydney has long included Gosford in its population total (I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong about this), and Melton is a lot closer to Melbourne than Gosford is to Sydney. So it was always unreasonable for Melton to not be included in Melbourne's total.

@@TransportVlog I think you are doing a great job in explaining the Melbourne Metro. its a great project. Unfortunately we Melbourne may be now the biggest City but our rail network is near Sydney's and certainly not fit for purpose. This highlighted by comparing what Sydney has provided in the way of Rail Infrastructure for their Growth Suburbs in the West and what we in Melbourne have provided for ours. Melbourne is at least 15-20 years behind Sydney when it comes to heavy rail.
@jiahaoxu6356
@jiahaoxu6356 Жыл бұрын
@@mjcats2011 15-20 yrs behind? Even if that's true, it's overestimating the diff. Sydney train/metro isn't that great, consider how often they break down and how many unfixed defects that are accumulated over the years. Even the new metro projects have serious problems: - chatswood metro line is not connected to paramatta, even the new light doesn't connect epping/macquarie to paramatta, bus/car is required - The other end of the chatswood metro line, Tallowong, is just steps away from the nearby train - converting existing Bankstown train to metro will inevitably result in shutdown - not enough stations built in the paramatta metro - it seems that different metro lines will be incompatible

@@mjcats2011 And NSW public transport is more expensive than the the Vic public transport, and cost more during peek time. The airport station charge you extra 18 dollar per tap and cap at 36 dollar per week, it's calculated outside of regular weekly cap. You can call a uber by paying a little bit more and it will be much more convenient.

Brilliant Paul... I've been following this project both in physical form and online for several years but I still learned a heap I didn't know. One thing worthy of consideration starts before your video did: the impact on Caulfield station, which will be the last interchange between the Frankston line and the Pakenham / Cranbourne lines before they enter the new tunnel. It's already a busy station with interchanges between 2 of Melbourne's busiest lines plus tram lines on either side, a Monash University campus and the Caulfield racecourse, and the existing underpass is crowded and the ramps are not DDA-compliant, so I foresee problems unless they build a bigger and better pedestrian overpass at the city end.
@TransportVlog

@@TransportVlog All but one of Melbourne stations have had step-free access since the early part of the 20th century but the ramps built originally have a slope of 1:7 whereas the current DDA standard is 1:14. As someone from Melbourne, all your Sydney videos provided some great knowledge about Sydney's train & light rail network and it was interesting to see a in-depth video on the Metro Tunnel project. This project will greatly increase frequency in the loop with a rerouting of the Sandringham line to go around the loop (On the tracks that the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines went on?). Some of the moving block signalling has already been implemented on some select sections of the Pakenham and Cranbourme lines, with new substations been built to provide enough power for the increased number of trains. There have also been upgrades on the Sunbury line, with a new maintenance facility for the HCMT's at Calder Park and a new substation. Thanks for making this video! I might've gotten some of this information wrong, so don't quote me.

Back in January 1967, on my first ever visit here to Melbourne on holiday from Sydney with my dad, we discovered that the two stations were then separated by a wall on the platform. Both stations had their own separate entrances and that if you used Princes Bridge station, the trains were of a slightly different type to those used at Flinders Street station. Hi Paul, I really enjoyed this trip to Melbourne, and I am excited to ride the addition to the Metro, which is not driverless. I foresee multiple trips for you to update this project for us. There are projects in every major city in Australia for you to cover in great detail and maybe a channel rebranding to "Transport Slog" will soon be more appropriate 😀 😅. With projects currently underway in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, I think you should engage your wife as an assistant Transport manager to avoid divorce 😂😂. I do jest and I can see a busier time ahead for you 😀 I can't wait for the rest of the "Australian Transport Projects" series from Paul at "Transport Slogs." 😂

Hi John, glad you enjoyed part 1 of my little adventure in Melbourne! Not planning to do regular updates for Metro Tunnel which is why this is more of an "explainer" video, I will of course, cover it when it opens in 2025. Interestingly, both this Melbourne trip and a recent trip to Brisbane were with my wife. She was working during the day, whilst I was filming and then we'd have a nice meal out in the evening.

The grey building shown at 15:00 is where the entrance used to be to Flinders St platform 14, back in the days before the demolition of existing buildings and construction of Federation Square. Trains to Epping and Hurstbridge departed here, as those lines intersect no others beyond the Loop or Flinders.

Hi Paul. So i remember you are in Melbourne. You can see some trains like The HCMT Which Stands For High Capaticy Metro Train which entered service in December 2020 To replace the Aging Comeng Trains. And i remember the Tangara Train in Melbourne Called 4D Which Stands For Double Deck Development and Demonstration which is based of Sydneys Tangara Trains. But It Was in Service From 1991 to 2002. But Its An Unreliable Train. The 4D Broke Down Very Easy, And Spend its Life In Sidings And Pick up Passengers. But The 4D Was Retired in 2002. And Scrapped In 2006.

Albury station was made extra long because it was the point where gauges changed. The idea was to have trans from victoria and nsw meet nose to nose. No idea why they didn't just make two platforms, but whatever.

Hi Kate, thanks for that. Yes that makes sense, but I agree an island platform would have been better. Apparently East Perth now has the longest platform in Australia at around 650 metres, but its not all covered, unlike Albury.

Thanks for this video about Melb Metro. I think this is a great project and finally 5 new stations, 3 of them being in locations without a train station. There are lots of offices on St Kilda Rd so its great there is a ANZAC station there. Also Parkville and Melb uni will have a train station. U mentioned this will free up capacity on existing city loop. Hopefully other lines will get more frequent services then.
@TransportVlog
@TransportVlog Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes absolutely. All lines will get more frequent services, partly by taking the Cranbourne/Pakenham/Sunbury lines out of the city loop, but also by introducing the high capacity moving block signalling system, which I expect will be rolled out on other lines too.

Great to see you in Melbourne and have you describe this project so well. I wonder if the tunnel connecting Town Hall to Flinders is wide enough. From how busy the southern Flinders St. Station tunnels get, and the arcade tunnel used to get at peak time, I can just imagine the foot traffic that's gonna happen along this route to get to the other side of Flinders/Spencer St when embarking/disembarking trains at Flinders.
