Melbourne's suburban railways and tramways were privatised in the late 1990s, with both networks sliced in half and franchised to separate operators - a messy decision that has been causing problems ever since. This is the story of 'The Met' being cut up and turned into Hillside Trains, Bayside Trains, Swanston Trams and Yarra Trams, which then turned into Connex, M-train, M-tram and Yarra Trams, which then condensed into Connex and Yarra Trams.. then Metro and Yarra Trams.. isn't privatisation great? 'The Split' is a lesson about public transport management gone very, very wrong. Enjoy!

All photos and videos are taken by Martin Bennet between 2002 and 2022. Because of the era this video discusses, it contains some of my earliest photos - I took some of these when I was still in primary school. The maps have been scanned from various printed material in my collection, including several editions of the world's best street directory, Melway. There are also a few screenshots of the MSTS Comeng I made back around 400 years ago.
In the video I mention there were virtually no major suburban rail infrastructure projects in the 90s - I'll admit I forgot about the Cranbourne electrification which was commissioned in 1995. Sorry Cranbourne. I did consider the Boronia grade separation, but decided it doesn't really count as a major project in the scheme of things.
